ABOUT GONZAGA:

•With two wins at San Diego over the weekend, Gonzaga clinched a share of the WCC regular season title, the third in program history. On Thursday, May 19, the Bulldogs used a four-run eighth inning to stun the Toreros 7-6, eliminating the hosts from WCC Championship contention. The next day, GU picked up a share of the league title with an 8-0 win and a second consecutive shutout from RHP Eli Morgan. On Saturday, San Diego leapt out to a 6-0 lead and held on, preventing the Bulldogs from claiming the league crown outright...

THINK OF ALL THE MILES WE’RE GETTING!:

•Gonzaga wraps up a season on the road with a single game at UC Santa Barbara. The contest caps a stretch of 13 road games to end the regular season, the Zags’ second-longest road trip of the year. After a layover in Santa Barbara, the Bulldogs continue north to Stockton for the WCC Championships, which begin Thursday, May 26th, at Banner Island Ballpark.
•The Zags are 23-12 in road games this year, sweeping a three-game series at UTSA, Pacific, and LMU and two-gamers at Oregon and Washington State to go with a series win at San Diego and splits at Grand Canyon and Washington. They’ve also won a single-game series at Arkansas. Their 23 road wins are tied with Wright State for second-most in the nation (Bryant leads D1 with 24), and they are the program’s most since at least 2003.
•After returning from the WCC Championships, the Zags will have travelled 28,828 miles and made four trips out of the Pacific time zone this season. Of their 50 regular season games, 40 of them are away from Spokane with 36 being true road games. They’ve had two road trips of at least 13 games: this 13-game season-ender and a 15-game stretch to begin the year.

WCC CHAMPIONS...AND CHAMPIONSHIPS:

•The Zags clinched a share of the WCC regular season title in San Diego, tying BYU and Saint Mary’s with an 18-9 conference mark for a three-way deadlock atop the conference ladder. While all three clubs will share the regular season title, the Gaels have the top seed at the conference tournament and BYU takes the No. 2 seed. Gonzaga’s the third seed and Pepperdine is fourth. The Zags will begin the 2016 WCC Championship with a 7:00 p.m. contest on Thursday, May 26, against the Cougars.
•Gonzaga now has three WCC regular season titles after winning the league pennant outright in both 2009 and 2013. This is also their third berth to the WCC Championships, a four-team tournament to decide which club gets the conference’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. This is the fourth year of the WCC Championships as the Zags were the top seed in its first year (2013) and were the three-seed one year later.
•Looking nationally, the Zags have the 30th-best RPI in Division I, leading BYU by 17 spots and Saint Mary’s by 41. This final game at UC Santa Barbara (RPI of 21) will be one last chance for the Zags to pick up a Top 25 win and solidify their bid for an NCAA Regionals berth. They haven’t been to the NCAA Regionals since 2009, when they won the WCC Series two games to none over Loyola Marymount in Spokane...

Regular Season Ends on Walk-off Loss

UCSB scores three in ninth to stun Gonzaga 6-5

SANTA BARBARA, Calif.--The Gonzaga University baseball team saw a tough end to the 2016 regular season Monday, falling 6-5 to Santa Barbara on a walk-off wild pitch at Caesar Uyesaka Stadium in Santa Barbara.

The Zags took an immediate lead to begin the game, scoring three runs in the first inning. Gonzaga put its first three batters on base -- Sam Brown on an error, Jeff Bohling on a double, and Taylor Jones on a walk -- and cleanup hitter Tyler Frost brought them all home with a double to right center.

Santa Barbara drew within one in the second, scoring two runs on three hits and an error, but Gonzaga got those back in the very next frame. Joey Harris gave the Zags a base runner with a two-out infield single, and he touched the plate shortly after when Nick Brooks smashed a 2-1 pitch from Kyle Hatton over the netting in left field. The two-run homer was Brooks' sixth of the year.

In the bottom of the third, the Gauchos scored once more, getting a run on a single from Billy Fredrick and ending Justin Vernia's outing. Lefty reliever Calvin LeBrun then came on to induce an inning-ending double play, preserving the lead for Gonzaga.

Over the next five innings, LeBrun shined while keeping UCSB off the board. The sophomore retired the first eight batters he faced, and Fredrick only broke that stretch with a single that bounced out of a diving Justin Jacobs' glove in the sixth. Unfazed, LeBrun made outs during the next two at-bats to end the frame and got through the seventh and eighth unscathed as well.

While LeBrun limited the home team's scoring chances, the Zags put men on base in each of the fifth, seventh, eighth, and ninth innings, but the Gaucho defense held and prevented insurance runs. In the bottom of the ninth, UCSB broke through against LeBrun, loading the bases with singles from each of the first three batters and placing the winning run on first. Closer Wyatt Mills then came on in relief, allowing a sacrifice fly to his first batter faced and a single to his second to tie the game. On that single, UCSB's Tevin Mitchell advanced to third base, and he scored the winning run on a wild pitch to Austin Bush...

Next Up:

As the tournament's No. 3 seed, the Bulldogs will begin the tournament with a contest against No. 2 BYU on Thursday, May 26. That game will begin at 7:00 p.m. at Banner Island Ballpark in Stockton.
