•The Zags are riding a six-game win streak after a 5-2 win over regional foe Washington State, clinching the season sweep versus the Cougars. Justin Vernia and Calvin LeBrun combined to two-hit the Cougars, Gonzaga’s fewest hits allowed since 2011, while four runs in the second inning were the bulk of Gonzaga’s offensive production. Pitching also starred in Gonzaga’s recent sweep at LMU; starters Brandon Bailey and Eli Morgan each pitched complete games in Los Angeles with Bailey allowing one run in game one while Morgan shut out the Lions in the second. During the series finale, the Bulldogs scored three times in extra innings for a 9-7 win.
•Head coach Mark Machtolf is in his 13th season at the helm of the program. He’s put together a 379-313-2 record (including this season’s results) as manager and is the second in program history in terms of wins and third in win percentage (.548). He’s also the second-longest tenured coach in program history behind Steve Hertz (24 years, 1978, 1981-2003). Before becoming head coach, Machtolf was an assistant for 13 years as well; this is his 26th season with Gonzaga baseball.

•Gonzaga continues its season-ending 13-game road trip in Southern California with three games at San Diego and one at UC Santa Barbara next Monday. After their brief stop in Santa Barbara, they’ll continue north to Stockton for the WCC Championships, which begin Thursday, May 26th at Banner Island Ballpark.
•The Zags are 21-11 in road games this year, sweeping three-game series at UTSA, Pacific, and LMU and two-gamers at Oregon and Washington State to go with series splits at Grand Canyon and Washington. They’ve also won a single-game series at Arkansas. Their 21 road wins are the tied with Kent State for the most in the nation, and they’re the program’s most since at least 2003.
•After returning from the WCC Championships, the Zags will have travelled 28,828 miles and made four trips out of the Pacific time zone this season. Of their 50 regular season games, 40 of them are away from Spokane with 36 being true road games. They’ve had two road trips of at least 13 games: this 13-game season-ender and a 15-game stretch to begin the year.

•Even though the Zags are already guaranteed a berth at the WCC Championships, they aren’t done yet as they chase a WCC regular season title. Gonzaga leads the conference with a 16-8 WCC record and sits one game ahead of both BYU and Saint Mary’s, who are tied with a 15-9 conference mark. Two wins at San Diego would clinch at least a share of the WCC title, and a sweep would give the Zags the title outright. The Zags have two regular season WCC titles in program history, those coming in 2009 and 2013.
•Looking nationally, last weekend’s sweep at LMU has boosted the Zags into numerous NCAA Tournament projects. Gonzaga’s RPI sits at 36 (as of Wednesday, May 18) with three games at San Diego (RPI of 128) and one at UCSB (RPI of 21)...

Zags Storm Back to Beat San Diego

Four eight-inning runs give Gonzaga the 7-6 win

SAN DIEGO, Calif.—Down by three entering the eighth, the Gonzaga University baseball team used a bit of late-game magic to beat San Diego 7-6 Thursday at Fowler Park in San Diego.

The visitors stormed back by scoring four times in the eighth inning. They sent 10 men to the plate that frame, scoring their runs on four hits, two walks, and a hit by pitch. Jeff Bohling began the inning with a double, and Taylor Jones brought him in with a single to the gap in right center. Four batters and two outs later, Joey Harris brought in another run with a knock through the left side. After a walk to load the bases, the next two batters – Jace VanDeBrake and Sam Brown – each drew walks to score a run, giving Gonzaga a 7-6 lead...

Title Race:

As noted before, Gonzaga (33-15, 18-8 WCC) clinched at least a share of first place in the WCC standings with the win. With another win on Saturday, the Bulldogs can win the league outright for the third time in program history; they previously took the regular season title in 2009 and 2013. Both BYU and Saint Mary’s kept pace with the Zags as the Cougars beat Santa Clara at home and the Gaels took two from Portland on the road. They both trail Gonzaga by a game at 17-9. If either club ends the year tied with Gonzaga, they’ll take a higher seed at the WCC Championships via a tiebreaker, but all teams tied at atop the WCC standings will be considered regular season co-champions...

Next Up:

Gonzaga and San Diego will wrap up the conference season with a final game on Saturday, May 21, again at Fowler Park. Junior righty Hunter Wells will take the mound for the Bulldogs while the Toreros have yet to announce their starter. First pitch for that contest is slated for 6:30 p.m.

Zags Fall in WCC Finale at San Diego

10-4 loss means Gonzaga splits WCC regular season title

SAN DIEGO, Calif.--The Gonzaga University baseball team settled for a share of the West Coast Conference title Saturday night, falling to San Diego 10-4 at Fowler Park. The Bulldogs will share the regular season championship with BYU and possibly Saint Mary's, which wraps up its WCC season Sunday, May 22...

Title Race:

With the loss, Gonzaga drops to 33-16 overall on the year and 18-9 in conference play. BYU closed out its conference season Saturday with a win over Santa Clara, giving the Cougars a WCC record of 18-9 as well. Both squads are considered regular season co-champions, but BYU will take the better seed in the WCC Championships via the head-to-head tiebreaker. Both clubs are a half-game ahead of Saint Mary's (17-9), which ends its WCC slate Sunday, May 22, at Portland. If the Gaels win that contest, they'll also be co-champions and will take the No. 1 seed in the conference tournament.

No matter the outcome of the Saint Mary's game Sunday, Gonzaga will be in the 2/3 game to begin the WCC Championships as Pepperdine has locked up the No. 4 seed at 16-10. The Waves have one more WCC game to play and have no chance at catching either Gonzaga or Saint Mary's in the standings...

Next Up:

Gonzaga will wrap up the regular season on Monday, May 23, with a non-conference game at UC Santa Barbara. The season finale against the Gauchos will begin at 3:00 p.m. at Caesar Uyesaka Stadium in Santa Barbara, Calif. UCSB is No. 21 in the NCAA's RPI rankings.
