Zags Draw Even at BYU with 9-5 win

Eight hits for extra bases, 13 total for Gonzaga

April 29, 2016

PROVO, Utah—After erasing two deficits, the Gonzaga University baseball team evened up its key West Coast Conference series at BYU Friday night with an 9-5 win over the Cougars at Miller Field in Provo.

The Zags used a big fifth inning to grab the lead permanently, scoring five runs on as many hits for an 8-4 advantage. After a leadoff walk, Tyler Frost and Jeff Bohling posted back-to-back doubles, Bohling bringing in two scores with his two-bagger. Two batters later, Nick Brooks singled through the left side to plate Bohling, and Brooks himself came across on another RBI double, this one from Jake Roberts. Shortstop Dustin Breshears wrapped up the scoring in the frame with a RBI single to right field, although the Zags did load the bases before the side was retired...

Next Up:

The Zags (25-14, 13-7 WCC) and Cougars will wrap up the three-game set on Saturday, April 30, with a 12:00 p.m. Pacific (1:00 p.m. Mountain) contest to decide the series. Gonzaga will send RHP Hunter Wells to the mound while the Cougars will counter with LHP Riley Gates.

Ninth Inning Rally Stuns Zags in Provo

BYU scores five in the ninth to win game, series

PROVO, Utah--The Gonzaga University baseball team held the lead for essentially the entire game, but a five-run rally in the bottom of the ninth by BYU handed the Bulldogs a tough 5-4 loss in the series finale at Provo's Miller Field.

After a ninth-inning RBI single from Joey Harris gave the Zags a four-run lead entering the bottom of the frame, BYU's offense managed five runs on four hits and a pair of walks from reliever Wyatt Mills for the win...

Bulldog Bites:

...With the loss, the Zags fall to 13-8 in West Coast Conference play and behind BYU (12-6) despite being a game ahead in the win column. Gonzaga is, however, three games ahead of fourth-place Pepperdine. The top four teams in WCC play will head to the WCC Championships, held in Stockton, Calif., May 26-28.

Next Up:

Gonzaga (25-15, 13-8 WCC) will have next weekend off for graduation, but they'll return to the field immediately afterwards with a newly-added non-conference series at Oregon. The Zags and Ducks will play two games at PK Park in Eugene, the first of which comes on Monday, May 9, at 6:00 p.m.

I caught some of that....when I was at GU, baseball was a very big deal..... I am sure the coach knows his players....but gee....didn't he have another picture....it was obvious (to me) that the kid wasn't going to get anyone out....

That freshman from Yakima VanDeBrake looks to have great potential...
