DURHAM, N.C.--After a stellar start to the season, junior right-hander Brandon Bailey has been named to the USA Baseball Golden Spikes Award midseason watch list.

Bailey has been dominant in his nine starts on the year, combining a 1.61 ERA with a 5-2 record and 72/17 strikeout/walk ratio. He's currently second in the West Coast Conference and among the nation's top 25 in strikeouts and strikeouts per nine innings (11.57) and third in ERA, opponent batting average (.197), and WHIP (1.02). The Broomfield, Colo., native has fanned at least five batters in every outing and posted seven quality starts on the year; he earned the win March 4 when the Zags took down then-No. 7 TCU in Fort Worth, and he struck out a career-high 13 April 1 at Pacific.

The Golden Spikes Award is presented annually to the best amateur baseball player in the United States. Bailey is the first Zag named to the Golden Spikes watch list since another pitcher from Colorado was in 2013: Marco Gonzales. Gonzales was one of 30 semifinalists for the award that year...
