Kamaka has definitely gained enough notability to Gonzaga's recruiting chatter to earn his own thread.

New article from today: http://www.madehoops.com/news_article/show/637909?referrer_id=1272156

Oregon, Gonzaga, Utah, Stanford, Washington, UCLA, Notre Dame, Virginia and Miami are some of the high major schools that have expressed interest in him. He will be doing some background information on each school that is recruiting him.

“I just want to see how each school’s style of play fits me and how they will let me further my basketball career,” said Hepa.

A lot of schools in close proximity to Hepa have been making him a priority.

“Gonzaga, Utah, Stanford, Arizona and a lot of other Pac-12 and WCC schools have been in contact with my Dad the most,” he told MADEHoops.

No offer yet but he singled out Gonzaga as the team showing the most interest. Also said he'd like to visit Spokane.

Gonzaga was watching 2018 6'8 PF Kamaka Hepa at Silas Melson's former high school in Oregon. Transfer from Alaska

"247Sports four-star power forward Kamaka Hepa, the nation's No. 29 prospect in the class of 2018, has moved from Alaska and enrolled at Jefferson High School, according to coach Pat Strickland."
"The 6-foot-9, 210-pound sophomore is a two-time Gatorade Alaska Boys Basketball Player of the Year, averaging 19.2 points, 11.8 rebounds, 3.2 blocks and 2.8 assists per game."

slightly OT, My wife is from Alaska so its one of those key words you cue in on when someone says where they are from. Spokane is like little Alaska with all the people that come down and end up here. I probably dont go one week where I dont hear someone say how they once lived in AK and decided to move and settle here.

I realize the competition isn't the greatest but Hepa looks pretty legit. And this is only his sophomore tape. His recruiting is soon going to blow up I'd imagine. Hopefully we've made an early impression.

Not to nitpick, but am I the only one who thinks his release is kinda low and too far forward making his shot easier (not easy) to block? It's not massively low or anything, but as a defender I loved going up against guys with a release like his.

Kinda society sick that players have to move to get exposure...I understand it, but kinda wrong nonetheless. The days of home town highschool is gone

Miami, pretty wily move. Figure a kid from Alaska has to be intrigued a bit by a move to Miami - nicely played.

Would love to get this kid, but if not, I'm sure we'll get the next 6'9 210 lb high school sophomore.

I'm not usually impressed with highlight tapes. It's too easy to string together a bunch of dunks for a real tall kid who plays against kids who are almost always much shorter. But here is what impressed me about this young man: 1) Coordination. It is rare to see a very tall 15/16 year old that physically coordinated. 2) A few of those no look passes sure caught my eye. And 3) the long haired point guard who clearly just loved to feed it to the big guy.

I noticed that too..his release point is low and too far out in front of his body on long range jumpers, almost like a push shot. That can be fixed. His athletcism, passing, dribbling and hustle are very impressive!

I would love to see him in a Zag uniform.

This link is for Arctic Hoops , a 24 minute "documentary" on the 2015-2016 Barrow hoops team, so Hepa's sophomore season. Produced by the Anchorage NBC affiliate.

http://www.ktuu.com/news/news/Arctic-Hoops/38094962

It covers the lead up to the season, and their trip to a three-game tournament in Wasilla. Their first opponent shown is Lincoln from Portland so you can see how they match up against an "outside" team. Not so much a highlight reel for Hepa, but additional info.

Totally unrelated, is this 30 for 30 short, "I am Yup'ik" about basketball in an even smaller Alaskan village. There are no 5 star players here, nor even a half star players. Just another good story.

I have seen some of those shows. Just wonderful stuff - how the entire community comes together, stacks the bleachers, cheers on a team that likely couldn't come within 20 pts of G-Prep's frosh team (talking the small towns, not Anchorage), but that's totally beside the point. Actually, maybe it is the point, community pride and support, unconditional. Thx for posting.

Right. I didn't phrase it well, but was thinking of bigs. Trajan Langdon is another guard from Anchorage who was right before Boozer. I know there was a guy I think who played for Bradley, and another guy from Southeast Alaska, Bell-Holter, who played for Oral Roberts.

2 Gonzaga coaches watched Kamaka this weekend:

SATURDAY NOTEBOOK FROM INDY: KAMAKA HEPA SHINES

On the recruiting front, things are beginning to heat up with Hepa as a majority of some of the top programs on the west coast, from the mid-level on up, have dished out an offer to the 6-foot-8 sophomore. On Saturday evening, Gonzaga head coach Mark Few and an assistant were in attendance for him as his father, Roland, spoke very high about the WCC juggernaut.

A few weeks ago, Hepa and his family visited Oregon and was very intrigued by what the Ducks had to offer but this recruitment is just beginning so buckle up because Kamaka Hepa is here to stay as a national-level and highly versatile prospect within the 2018 class.

This scares makes me timid on him: "The style of play from basketball in Alaska is a lot different than it is in Oregon. 'The physicality is a lot more intense here and athleticism is on another level,' said the Alaskan native. 'The tempo here is also a lot faster."

He'll learn zagdont. He's got a great frame. Once he learns it's a physical war down low ( few people actually sit down there and watch) he'll get some muscle on him and he'll step it up. I really believe that. Special kid from all reports. I just hope Dana doesn't grab him....he's a killer and very persuasive recruiter and a very good coach.

About ten years ago, with teenage suicide reaching epidemic proportions in rural Alaska, Barrow took steps to field their first high school football team. A teacher from Florida, iirc, was taken with the story and started a fundraiser for the Barrow football field. What resulted was a Boise State inspired blue turf field, that was placed right up against the Arctic Ocean.

Agree w you. Impressive ball handling, passing and fluid athleticism but he's gotta correct his shooting form if he has professional aspirations. Release point is low and out in front of his body which makes it easy to block when playing against same sized defender..

I don't think his shot is woefully low. It's not like Shawn Marion's and he was a pretty good pro. Would love to see this kid at GU. He is still fairly raw. Next 2 years will determine if he's a top 100 player or top 50.

If this kid progresses, with the right coaching, he could well be Top 25 as his skills are IMO Top 100 as a sophomore...This would be a super recruit to have sign with us or actually commit to us...hopefully, the staff can find a way to lure him away from UO, UCLA, UA, UW...

Agree. Shoots from just above eye level is what I see. Derek Raivio had a low release; 5'6 Jeremiah Dominguez shot it from his waist and killed the Zags with like 7 threes with that quick jab step and stepback. More important imo is can you get open, and can you get the shot off quickly. Most players develop a sense of when they can get a shot off with their particular release. And not everybody can develop comfort shooting the ball from over their heads. In the vids it looks like he takes the jumper when he's open; you don't really need a big to be taking jumpers with a hand in his face anyway. That's the guards' job.

I think he is raw for a different reason, though. As a sophomore he is far more productive than what I see from some of the other kids we are looking at. He just doesn't look completely like a basketball player in instinct and mannerism. I think most are in agreeance that if he does develop...kid is going to be stupid good.

...I sure am glad they didn't have Youtube videos back when I played!....I was one of those 5'8" white guys getting schooled by Clint Richardson of Odea High School back in the early 70's ..he went on to play a number of years in the NBA...they called him a poor man's David Thompson....6'4" and could jump out of the gym!!!

Does anyone know enough about the situation to give a reasonable breakdown of our chances; lead, up in the air, little to not point - that type of thing? Watching video on the guy has been fun and he's a compelling story.

I really have no idea other than we've been on him a long time. My guess is if we really want him then I'd imagine we have a legit shot at him. He's been a favorite of mine for awhile now.

Well, he's Filipino and the Philippines is the largest Catholic nation in the world so that's got to help with us.

I hear ya GeorgiaZag. At 5'11", 160#, I made the mistake of grabbing onto the ball while it was in the hands of a man-child named Reed Monson (6'5", 215 plus, played for Red River HS, Grand Forks ND). Ol' Reed went up for his shot and literally lifted me off the floor while attached to the ball. He later accepted a full-ride scholie at Univ of Tennessee. Now I stick to bicycling!

I was a bit concerned to see the 100% Oregon prediction. Then I saw that it is one vote. From an Oregon blogger. I really like Hepa and he seems to like the Zags, would love to lock him up sooner than later.

He's a 2018 we cannot "lock him up" anytime soon.

I have looked several places about Hepa that list teams that have offered and have never seen Zags listed. Is it too early to "offer" or is this just not true?

At this point, is there any legitimate excuse for a big who wants to play for money to say "no" to us? I'll accept if a guy wants to play very close to home. Perfectly understandable and applauded, parents matter.

But, he already went to HS away from home. If coaches want him, they should go get him. From YouTube, he looks a little like Rui except a little more polished. Big shoulders, all over the court. Hops. Am I wrong here?
