Interesting that 3 of the 4 head coaches in Chicago are featured in this "pictorial" from a "couple" of years ago. Also ... Juli Boeheim was the key figure behind Marcy and Mark Few's involvement in Coaches vs Cancer ... so it's very fitting that her husband Jim is among those pictured here.

FWIW I never tire of seeing pics of the Zag legends of the past .... and Ronny's mom was in town as this was shortly after his life-saving open heart surgery. Ronny was recovering at my golf partner Brian Michaelson's house at the time.

Good stuff. Few's peers recognized his gifts early.

The story about Ronny, and the coaches rallying around his hospital room, him promising to get through it as a "good Zag" is one of the best and will remain so.

Thx

That's awesome. Thanks for sharing. I know Boeheim was close to Jimmy V as they coached against each other for years and he also fought prostate cancer in 2001 so he's dedicated a huge amount of time to Coaches vs Cancer. Love him or hate him, he's helped raise a ton of money for a great cause. I love seeing Mark Few so involved in that as well. He's such a class act.

Do you guys ever get nervous he might be lured away to another program? I know he's a fixture at Gonzaga, but schools like Louisville, UCLA, Georgetown, etc can be pretty generous when they really want a specific coach.

Years ago a large box arrived in the GU Athletic Department. It was addressed to Mark Few and inside the box was a "to scale" model of the soon to be built John Paul Jones Arena in Charlottesville. There was also a note asking if $3,000,000 sounded appealing. That's just one of the many overtures to Coach Few over the years. Others have been from "Blue Bloods" including Indiana and UCLA.

To answer your question ... No .... I am not nervous or concerned.

Used to. A little, 10 years ago.

No longer. As GZ said, there's nothing that can lure his heart away, even if he didn't have kids now deep in school, and as much as he loves his Zag family, he's never left any doubt that his own family will always come first. Nothing could lure him then, surely nothing can now.

Heard Few say in a radio interview the other day that seeing coaches such as Boeheim staying with programs as long has they have was one reason why he's stayed with Gonzaga. So no, not worried.

He's already turned down NC State, Indiana, Arizona, Washington, and his own alma mater, Oregon. He's not leaving until he retires.

that's the spirit!

I think if Coach stays at GU he has a realistic shot at retiring as the coach with the most wins all time in D1.

Has there every been a younger looking collegiate player than Derek Raivio?

We overlook sometimes how great gonzaga has been helping and growing with the basketball program. Ive heard Few say numerous times how he has no reason to leave if he feels supported by the university... Speaking of which, how's the new practice facility coming along? ;)

But by the time he was a senior, David looked like a seasoned 9th grader!!

Always thought Arizona would be the one to lure him away. But not anymore. Only way he looks to leave is if the Administration does a complete turnaround and abandons the program, which will never happen as long as enrollment keeps increasing and the alumni are engaged financially.
