Blanchette: Gonzaga’s performance shouldn’t come as a shock to anyone
http://www.spokesman.com/stories/2016/mar/17/gonzagas-performance-shouldnt-come-as-a-shock-to-a/

DENVER – How did anyone not see this coming? It’s the dance, right? Gonzaga’s in it, yes? Of course yes. It was the first round, right? And the last time the Bulldogs didn’t survive the first round it took Stephen Curry and a trip across the country into the opponent’s backyard to make it happen.

Underdog? Domantas Sabonis, Gonzaga flex muscle in Seton Hall rout

DENVER – Gonzaga might have been the lower seed and the school from the smaller conference, but there was little doubt Thursday night in the Zags 68-52 win over Seton Hall which team was the NCAA tournament veteran

Gonzaga cruises past Seton Hall in NCAA tournament opener

DENVER — Battle tested. Those were the words Gonzaga assistant coach Tommy Lloyd used to describe the Bulldogs after they survived an improbable run through the West Coast Conference tournament to once again prevail as champions for the fourth straight year.

"I've faced some of the toughest defensive groups in the country, playing in the Big East," Whitehead said, per the AP. "This is probably my worst shooting performance, but I think it was just more missing shots. I had some good looks, just was an off night."

So even in defeat, he can't say his opponents were the cause of any of his grief.

I know Whitehead was disappointed and got to be the player he is by believing in himself, but this statement did come off as quite unsporting. Just compliment the other team even if they're not from the vaunted Bug East. It doesn't take from your manhood - it adds to it. Anyway, he and Gordon did have nice things to say about Sabonis. Not sure why they couldn't do the same for guards that shut them down and helped grabbed 14 more boards. Must be that New York attitude ;)

They showed Whitehead using Oxygen during the game. Anyone know if any Zags used it?

Fairly certain they sucked all the oxygen from the SHU side of the arena. Those lobsters looked like this by the end:

they were fed a steady diet of the "you are tougher, you are more talented, you are from a better conference" garbage from their fans and media for the past week. to give our guards credit for playing good defense would be inconsistent with that narrative. cognitive dissonance wins again.

They did not.

This was widely tweeted about during and after the game.

Mental edge, perhaps?

Someone commented on how Seton Hall planned on using O2 and stated Coach Few would never have it.

Honestly could have been mental with it being available instead of 'fighting' through it.

There is a great video on espn.com with Eamonn Brennan discussing the maturation of the guards. Don't have a link but it was embedded in the espn MBB page a little ways down.

:lmao: so he learned nothing apparently and maintains the cognitive dissonance.

Like Ditka wearing short sleeves in cold weather, the Zags may have made a conscious decision to ignore the elements to show toughness/focus. In any event, it worked. TV cameras kept cutting to SHU players with O2 masks (probably bcuz they wanted to let viewers understand that altitude was a factor so much so that players were being given O2). They never showed any GU player doing the same. I didn't hear any of the TV commentators mention the contrast and didn't hear any questions in the post-game about it. I thought the use of the masks made the SHU look like they were being worn down by a better conditioned, fresher team. Probably just optics, but it did seem to translate into SHU's hang-dog psyche down the stretch.

Yeah, the O2 masks on Seton guys made it look like we were booting the stuffing out of them. I had to chuckle a bit cuz it sure didn't seem like something pleasant to do nor did it seem to be of any benefit. Helium on the other hand might have been a better gas of choice :)

I just want to say that I would not trade any of our guards for Whitehead. I won't say he is overrated, I'll just say that he is the type of player that is in it for himself (my opinion, based on observation only) and does not make his teammates better, despite his assist line last night. I personally think that Perk is a better player (I said player, not scorer, not athlete).

That, and I think BigEast basketball is extremely over-valued and the top 3 in the WCC are clearly under-valued (due to the flotsam and jetsam that litter the bottom 2/3rds of our conference).

Looks like some people look for any sign of a positive...

Sarcasm aside, it's great that Seton Hall has high educational goals and results. Props to them for that.

If March Madness were based on academics, would Seton Hall have won? (http://www.nj.com/essex/index.ssf/2016/03/if_march_madness_were_based_on_academics_see_which .html)
