Uh-oh WCC may be leaving the Orleans for MGM-not good

The West Coast Conference’s contract with The Orleans ends Tuesday after the men’s and women’s basketball championship games. And that means second-year commissioner Lynn Holzman ...

I don't know if the above link will work, but it basically says the WCC tournament contract is up this year and the new commissioner is thinking about moving it to the MGM, which is a BAD idea. The pac 12 is there and the ticket prices are HORRIBLY PRICED! And the parking prices and rooms are barely affordable. Or the new t-mobile arena which opens next month

I hope they can work a new deal and leave it like it is

The Kennel Club always books a block of rooms at Monte Carlo so I think having games near the strip would be good, but, half empty arena with more expensive tickets round suck.

Depends on which property offers the WCC the best deal. While The Orleans is not without its charms, the hotel and casino are kind of a dump. Only stayed there once and decided its remote location off The Strip was too much hassle. The Orleans Arena is nice

One advantage to leaving The Orleans: Seating capacity at MGM Grand Garden Arena is four or five thousand greater than The Orleans. Might make the annual scramble for WCC tourney tickets less frantic.

Or is she just leveraging the MGM/T Mobile sites to get a good deal with the Orleans?

I am sure the WCC will do what is best for their member schools.......like adding Pacific to the WCC, ensuring that the regular season scheduling it handled by a competent third party and moving the start of the WCC regular season up into Dec when students are not around to cheer on their team etc.

The Pac 12 commish has said that the Pac 12 Tournament may move to the new arena in Vegas that is being built across the street from the Monte Carlo:

WCC looking at other venues besides the Orleans Arena

I welcome going to a larger venue. The Orleans only has about 6,000 actual seats (sidelines seats behind the basket aren't used). I think with the WCC now having 10 schools, including BYU being a larger fanbase, that the WCC has outgrown the Orleans arena.

The brand new, under construction T-Mobile Arena would be amazing. They could curtain off a portion of the seats if it is too many.

WCC has 10 schools, and has outgrown the Orleans Arena.

Orleans only has about 6,000 usable seats (the sideline seats, behind the baskets aren't even used).

I think if the WCC wear to go to the new T-Mobile arena there would actually be cheaper ticket availability.

More seats would be nice. The temporary seats are poor. Every year the arena lighting has malfunctioning lights that negate the flash camera prohibition. As for the price of tickets the PAC 12 is in a position to charge hirer prices than the WCC. The rental price at the MGM is only one factor in ticket pricing.

The only problem is that even the Orleans is mostly empty unless Gonzaga or BYU is playing. It's just a sad statement about our league that the fan base for all the other programs just doesn't travel like GU does. Sadly, even SMC doesn't fill the seats like GU does. Anyone who has walked past their pre-game social on the way to the GU social will agree that they have 20% of the crowd that GU does.

If GU (or to a lesser extent BYU) are not playing, a larger venue makes for really bad optics.
                    But we don't play nobody.

I love this idea! More seats in a much better location. If you book early, the MGM routinely has rooms for less than $150 per night. I have had 2-3 trade shows or visits in Las Vegas each year for the past 15 years. I've stayed everywhere. The MGM brings in lower priced properties and higher priced properties. It's location is excellent for the Monte Carlo, Luxor, Excalibur, NY NY, Bellagio, Aria, Tropicanna all within walking distance (2 Las Vegas Blocks = 1/2 mile). No ridiculous cab lines after the games; hundreds of great restaurants and bars to choose from and better opportunities to buy tickets on the primary market; I'm in! I hope they move.

Not sure why the fact that the PAC plays at the MGM has any thing to do with it being a GOOD idea or a BAD idea....Did I miss something?

I believe the Zags, being the only game in Spokane is the reason they travel so well. BYU has more of a fan base that travels but there are other distractions: Jazz, USU, and Utah draw from the same fan base.

With regards to SMC, there are 6 D1 schools and 6 pro teams within a forty mile radius, that sure does force fans to make choices. That can surly have an impact on the number of fans supporting SMC.

I don't think that the Utes and Bee Why You share much of the same fan base. I'm pretty sure not many Utes fan would rearrange their schedule to watch or attend a BYU game but I may be wrong.....Anyway, if you use school enrolments and SMSA numbers between SLC and Spokane, it's not much of a comparison....they are very different sample sizes
