Gonzaga Team Qualifies for College Debate’s National Championship

SPOKANE, Wash. – A Gonzaga University debate team will compete in the National Debate Tournament, college debate’s national championship tournament, at State University of New York, Binghamton, March 31-April 4. This marks the 21st time in the past 22 years that a Gonzaga team has qualified.

“Only 78 teams from the across the nation are invited to attend this event,” said Glen Frappier, director of debate and senior lecturer at Gonzaga. “So, as always, we can expect some amazing competition.”

Representing Gonzaga will be the team of juniors Jenna Bauer, from Des Moines, Iowa, and Dillon Johnson, Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. Frappier expects the team of junior Paige Spraker, Boise, Idaho, and sophomore Ben Weinhardt, Des Moines, Iowa, to receive an at-large bid but that won’t be known for certain until March 7.

“We will spend the next five weeks preparing, which promises to include a lot of scouting the competition, research and argument development, and of course many practice debates,” Frappier said.
