“We promised you a league championship,” Eric McClellan told the slice of the Senior Night crowd that stuck around for the traditional post-game salutes, “and that’s what we’re going to give you.”

It’s bold thinking. One stop the Zags must make is at Brigham Young, and the Cougars already bested Gonzaga the first time around in Spokane — one of four teams to win in McCarthey this season.

Four. The building was more than five years old before the Bulldogs had suffered their first four losses inside its doors.

There were other bookkeeping curios in that vein. The Gaels hadn’t pulled off a season sweep of Gonzaga since 1995 (with an asterisk — GU beat them en route to winning the WCC tournament). And no league opponent had done the deed since San Diego in 1997.

Those can be filed in the “Had to Happen Sometime” drawer. It’s getting a little full — with an elephant sized folder growing in the ‘In’ box.

GU’s three seniors – Dranginis, Kyle Wiltjer and Eric McClellan – had rough nights, combining for just 28 points on 9-of-31 shooting.

“Most of them were pretty good looks, they didn’t happen to drop,” Few said of Wiltjer, who finished 5 of 16. “They have good length, they guard him tight and don’t give him much separation on the ball screens.”

Sabonis scored Gonzaga’s first two baskets on easy layups but had one more field goal the rest of the way. He finished 3 of 8 from the field.

“It was basically what they did in the first game,” Sabonis said. “They tried to double me, when I bounced it they would come at me. I would pass it out and try to make reads from there.”

Josh Perkins led Gonzaga with 21 points, but the rest of the Zags made 13 of 44 field-goal attempts (29.5 percent) and 2 of 19 from 3-point range (10.5 percent).

Hoping to expand on their seven-point halftime advantage, the Gaels failed to do so as Gonzaga (21-7, 13-3 WCC) fought back on the strength of back-to-back 3-pointers from Josh Perkins and a layup from Eric McClellan that brought the Bulldogs to within four early in the second half.

Later, Landale scored eight points to help the Gaels rebuff a Gonzaga spurt fueled by six quick points from Perkins.

"I said before the game that this group's getting pretty tough," Bennett said. "You got to bring your toughness in this game -- your mental toughness.

"This is a tough place to play, and you're playing a good team -- and then there's something on the line too."

SPOKANE, Wash. -- Calvin Hermanson scored 12 with a pair of free throws that made it a five-point game with 12.8 seconds left and Saint Mary's swept the season series with Gonzaga in a 63-58 win on Saturday night.

The Gaels (22-4, 13-3) tied Gonzaga atop the West Coast Conference standings as they completed their first regular-season sweep of the Bulldogs (21-7, 13-3) since 1995. It gives Saint Mary's the first tiebreaker in the conference tournament seeding should it remain tied with Gonzaga at the end of the regular season.

Saint Mary's had a 10-3 run to lead 58-47 with 5:10 left. Joe Rahon stopped a 6-0 Gonzaga run with a floater that made it 60-53 at 1:23. Josh Perkins and Kyle Wiltjer scored to cut it to 61-58 before Hermanson iced it.

Evan Fitzner and Emmett Naar scored 13 and Joe Rahon added 10 for Saint Mary's.
