Montana and Northern Arizona went to OT, the Griz prevailed in the extra session. I believe 90-84 was the final. Surprising to me, NAU looked absolutely awful against both Gonzaga and Arizona previously this season.

Neither is a GU opponent, but previously undefeated Xavier got destroyed by Villanova by 30 today. You usually don't see good teams get beaten that badly.

One of Xavier's best players was also carted off the court early in the game. He was taken to a local hospital but is OK.

Did not know that, didn't see the game, just the score. Yeah that might've had a psychological impact on the team. Glad he's okay.

107!!!! to 95 in regulation?????

That is an embarrassment, somehow.

No defense, b/c everything was a foul? Game became a FT shooting contest btween 2 good FT shooting teams?

Wow.

ETA: No box score out there yet, but: Thu, Dec 31

Final 1 2 T
Portland 62 33 95
San Francisco 51 56 107

Combined 113 pts scored in the 1st half.

Pilots had been 2-0, now 2-1

Not a bad idea to note that UP was up by 11 with 61 pts scored in the first half and lost by 12. There might be a lesson to be learned somewhere.

53 called fouls. San Francisco shot 26-40, Portland 25-28. I hope they got that crap out of their system!

One wonders if the % goes way up when the only defense allowed is the old one hand up other on your waist b/c everything else is a foul?

Bottom line - 53 fouls and we are playing 2 walk-ons, probably.

I don't want to start a new thread, but...UCLA plays the Huskies tomorrow in Seattle, and the Cougs on Sunday, in Pullman.

I know I want the Cougs to win, and UCLA to lose, but who should we root for, as benefitting the Zgas the most?

Rex gets his ass kicked in the first half, cries like a baby, refs call everything in the second half. That's his MO.

Chucker the 2nd lives. He just took (and missed) 3 shots on one possession. All jumpers. Then he came down and hacked up another off balance, off the dribble shot. Amazing.

#4. Emery.

I'm not sure what to think of St. Mary's... BYU played absolutely horrible most of the night and still managed to take the lead in the 2nd half. And I stopped counting the amount of lay-ins the Cougars were giving up in the first half alone. St. Mary's shot the 3 pretty well, but I'm still not convinced. BYU is one team that can look like world-beaters one night and then the next game look like bottom of the WCC.

I'm quite sure of what I think of St Mary's. Seen them 4 times now, and they get a lot of layups because they move the ball so well, run the pick and roll to perfection, and space the floor and beat you with cuts to the hoop when you get out on the shooters. They move the ball patiently until someone's open, every time. On the offensive end, Naar and Rahon are as good as anyone in the country. It's no accident that they lead the nation, at least as of a few days ago, in both 2 and 3 pt fg% as well as a/to ratio (by a pretty wide margin on the latter) top 3-4 in total apg.

I bet Mark Few knows what he thinks of St Mary's as well. Beating them in Moraga will be a very tall task.

If their three's are falling it will be a heck of a game.

I looked at their numbers game by game. Their first game of the season is the only time they've been under 40% for a game.
Naar, Rahon, Gonzalez, Hermanson, Fitzner, Clark are all good to excellent shooters, and they never take a bad shot unless the clock is expiring.

When a team reduces a fine player like Collingsworth to looking very pedestrian we should pay attention.

Watched SMC vs BYU and have concluded Zags are unlikely to win WCC this year. only way Zags win is if Sabonis plays like he did vs Tennesee when BYU and SMC play Zags.

I think Gonzaga has as good a chance as any....just need to hold service at home and not lose more than a couple on the road....

BYU and St Maries appear to try to out score you....offense comes and goes, especially on the road.

Defense travels well and wins games.

Quote from Kyle Davis on the game.

"They did everything they wanted to do and played so well," Davis said. "We didnít do anything to stop them. It just didnít happen. It seems like we did do what we wanted to do, but they were just countering it a lot better than we were playing against it. We didnít disrupt them enough. That's a team that will cut you up real quick with a bunch of plays. They get a lot of things going. We were just not good enough."

Zags still have the two of the three best players among the three teams. But then there is a major drop off in both quality and quantity. Josh is coming on, but still has a way to go. KD, Melson and Alberts are all but harmless on offense and Edwards is apparently not ready for prime time.

Utah just gagged it up from the line.
First an 87% ft shooter misses 2 with 15 seconds left. Then an 80% ft shooter misses 2 more with less than 2 seconds left.
Going to OT

Odds of 4 straight misses from shooters with those#s are below 1%

It was funny...the play before Fisher (I think) was called for an offensive push with his off hand, I thought that the SMC player had done the same thing. I also though SMC got away with that on most drives into the paint. If the game was called evenly, it MIGHT have made a difference.

I do think the Zags play better defense than BYU showed, which would cut down on the SMC offense. I think the Zags have a better overall team offense and defense...but, that's why they play the games. It isn't the eyeball test or on paper, it is head to head, at least in conference.

With all due respect that is not what I saw.....BYU missed bunny after bunny and could get any shot it wanted but couldn't hit their butt with either hand... and the Gaels shot lights out from the 3.....just my eye test, I didn't actually look at the box score.
