The 7-11 Sophomore was last week's player of the week in the Pac-12. Will miss Shem...

They go 7'1", 245 lbs, and 6'10" 260 lbs in the front court.

We are REALLY going to miss Shem for this one…it was Karnowski who held Parker in check last season's match-ups. He was going off vs most teams til Karno was an immoveable force.

UCLA's entire starting-5 averages in double figures, their backcourt averages 14, 13, 11…solid.

Isaac Hamilton (former Zag killer), Bryce Alford (ditto), Aaron Holiday (talented frosh) are all good shooters as well.

This seems to be a nearly impossible match-up for us sans Shem.

Up and coming 7'1" Center, workhorse 260+lb Parker, guards who shoot the 3. UCLA is every bit as good as Arizona, especially now they found their rotation.

With Shem, an entirely different game as we hold their front court in check without fear of fouls and allow our guards to defend and pass the ball.

Without PK, we are desperate to avoid fouls, force the ball inside, and allow UCLA to get position in post and work inside-out to their 3pt snipers.

One of the biggest successes we had last year was our scoring from the wing i.e. Byron Wesley had great games vs theme.

We just don't match-up well with these guys this season.

No Karno in this game = a loss unfortunately. Edwards is going to have to really bring it to prevail and that is if the guards are playing well.

Lets not forget, while they did beat Kentucky, the also lost to Monmouth University. At home. They are not world beaters here.

Guess I missed the official announcement that Karno is out for this game...let alone til January as the redshirt question thread suggests!!?

I like Edwards and don't think Zags are doomed without PK. Guards just need to play way better than they've shown thus far. What worries me is UCLA has double payback from losses in Pauley and in NCAA tourney on their mind, not to mention desire to sustain momentum from Kentucky W and play themselves into top 20 with a win at Zags.

Big game for both teams!!! Go Zags

I like Edwards too, but he still doesn't play. Prior to Karno going down, I thought it would take an injury to one of the B3 for Edwards to get any significant minutes. But with MtK out, Edwards still isn't playing much. It's not like he looks bad when he's in there either. I'm a little perplexed. I would think at least 20 mins a game??? Hope Few knows what he's doing (oh wait, that's a different thread :)

its crazy that win or lose, its only a win for UCLA against GU.

IMO they are going to route us. Way too much talent vs way too much unsettled players not playing like a team.

UCLA has revenge on their minds. This could get ugly for the home team, unless our young guards grow up very quickly.

Don't forget the best player in this game wears a Zag jersey.

Also pretty sure Sabonis is not going to lie down versus their bigs.

Hopeful this is a rebound game for Perkins, Emac, Melson and Dranginis. Don't care what anyone here says, those four have the potential to win and even dominate the matchup with the UCLA backcourt. Alford especially should not be able to hang with our guards.

I think we'd better break out some form of defense that protects the key. Our guards should be able to hold their in check.
If Kyle Wiltjer can begin making his shots the whole game, they can't guard him outside..........let's all hope he scores 40 and the guards defend.
Should be a tough one. We can win it though. Just because UCLA beats a great team doesn't mean they can do it to us. They did play an exceptional game the other night. Few needs ot design a winner.

My concern is the opposite. Can our guards hang with Alford. I have not seen our guards display that kind of energy as a tandem let alone one on one. Something to watch for Saturday Zags

Not sure why you think Alford is the weak link in their back court or what you mean in saying he should "not be able to hang with our guards." Don't let the name fool you, Bryce Alford is a hell of a lot more than just the coach's son. Great player, used to the spotlight, has proven himself as a big time D-1 guard. At this point, I'd be thrilled if any Zag guard steps up and proves capable of hanging with Alford.

I've seen Alford play plenty of times and yes he is a solid guard and good spot up shooter. I was talking 'potential' and used 'should' specifically because from an athleticism perspective an EMac or Melson should shut him down. I seem to remember him struggling against us last year and our backcourt defense was no where near this years. We'll see what happens on the court though, we know potential doesn't count for anything when the game tips off.

So many things lined up against us......

Really worried.

And yet cannot shake off the fact that with a minute or so to play in the first half with AZ we were up by 14.

The losses this year are going to sting, very bad. Really hope we can pick up the win this weekend. If so, that gives us a 3-1 record in the Pac, the one being one of 2 leaders. That would seem to indicate we'd finish 1 or 2 in any BCS division not named ACC. We'll see.

Slipper Still Fits: Gonzaga vs. UCLA: Bulldogs face another stiff test at home (http://www.slipperstillfits.com/2015/12/11/9885316/gonzaga-vs-ucla-bulldogs-face-another-stiff-test-at-home)

Go Joe Bruin: UCLA Basketball: Good At Pauley Pavilion, Not So Much On The Road (http://gojoebruin.com/2015/12/10/ucla-basketball-good-at-pauley-pavilion-not-so-much-on-the-road/)

Last season, the Bruins lost to Gonzaga at Pauley in a game that could have gone both ways. Additionally, UCLA Basketball went undefeated at home in Pac-12 play. Incredible, right? Yes, but things get a bit lopsided when considering how the Bruins play away from Pauley.

Considering true road and neutral site games, the Bruins are 9-19 in the last three seasons. That includes a 4-4 preseason tournament record and no conference road sweeps. In road/neutral games against non-conference opponents, the Bruins are 4-8.

This is important considering the Bruin’s next opponent against #20 Gonzaga which will be played in Spokane, Washington on Saturday night. This will be the first true road game for UCLA this season and a cause for concern.

ESPN: Daily Word (http://espn.go.com/mens-college-basketball/story/_/id/14342399/daily-word-getting-know-texas-longhorns)

3. Gonzaga lost to Arizona and barely beat Montana. Are the Zags vulnerable against UCLA at home?

Katz: Yes, mainly because of injuries up front to Przemek Karnowski and inconsistencies on the perimeter. But UCLA has to take ownership too. The Bruins will be getting their first true road test. We'll see if they are up to the challenge.

Brennan: Absolutely yes. Missing Karnowski is bad enough against a Tony Parker/Thomas Welsh frontcourt that clocked Kentucky last week. And it's not like the Zags have proved themselves impervious to home losses to Pac-12 teams. Worse yet is the performance of Gonzaga's guards. Kyle Wiltjer and Domantas Sabonis desperately need more from their inexperienced backcourt colleagues, and until they get it, the Bulldogs will be an easy team to scheme for.

Medcalf: Definitely. The Karnowski back spasms have been an issue. He might not play again this weekend. But the bigger issue, as Eamonn mentioned, has been the nondescript presence of the Gonzaga backcourt. Who are they? Will someone step up? And some of Gonzaga's defensive weaknesses have been exposed this season now that Gary Bell Jr. isn't around to be used like a free safety. Gonzaga will have its hands full with another Pac-12 squad this weekend.

Vince Grippi column from today's S-R

Jim Meehan's 12/11 Preview: http://www.spokesman.com/stories/2015/dec/11/gonzaga-facing-ucla-team-on-the-rise/

Gonzaga’s momentum slowed when 7-foot-1 center Przemek Karnowski took a hard spill in practice 11 days ago and injured his back. The Karnowski-less Zags are 2-1, sandwiching wins over Washington State and Montana around a disappointing home loss to Arizona, but their offense has slipped from 81.4 points per game to 64.3.

UCLA (6-3), meanwhile, has won three straight, including an impressive victory over No. 1 Kentucky. The Bruins are fully stocked with motivation for Saturday’s meeting at the McCarthey Athletic Center after losing to Gonzaga twice last season, once in Pauley Pavilion and a season-ender in the Sweet 16.

“They’re coming in on a high,” Gonzaga freshman point guard Josh Perkins said. “They probably want revenge, they probably have a bitter taste in their mouth. We still have a bitter taste from Saturday (Arizona) so it’ll be a good game.”

LA Daily News Preview: http://www.dailynews.com/sports/20151211/ucla-seek-revenge-for-sweet-16-loss-to-gonzaga

This season, Alford has become one of the team’s veterans, leading the team in scoring (16.4 per game) and needing just five more to hit the 1,000-point career mark. He and the rest of the Bruins (6-3) have already avenged one of last year’s losses, beating the top-ranked Wildcats at home earlier this month in a game they controlled the entire way.

Pulling a similar upset could be difficult at McCarthey Athletic Center, an arena that UCLA coach Steve Alford called one of the best in college basketball. Since its opening in 2004, the 6,000-seat venue has seen the Bulldogs (6-2) lose just 10 times.

That this will be UCLA’s first true road game of the season means a trial by fire for the team’s young guards. Freshman Aaron Holiday leads the team with 17 steals in his nine starts, while fellow four-star recruit Prince Ali has been a valuable presence off the bench. Bryce Alford said he and senior center Tony Parker have tried their best to instill calm in the locker room.

“Just make it like a basketball game,” said the younger Alford. “That’s what Tony says a lot, is, ‘It’s just basketball. Go play basketball.’ ... Go out and play, and have fun doing it. I think that’s when we play our best.”

Statistician Ken Pomeroy gives the Bruins a 20 percent chance of pulling off the upset, the lowest odds of any game on their schedule this season, including the Kentucky game.

Besides an extremely poor end-of-game basket interference call by the refs, Alford was the reason UCLA was able to come back and beat SMU at the Dance last year...he is a solid player and JP's work is cut-out for him to say the least...

Id hve Kyle Dranginis be in his cup. His only job would be to stop Aldord and keep him busy with or without the ball. Kyle's defense is qquite good. He's bigger , longer and can keep up with Alford. If our bigs can keep theirs in check, Alford won't be finding those screens he uses so well.
GAWD I wanna beat UCAL tonight. We really need this one.
