Pointless. We are not a good ft shooting team. Just something we are going to have to deal with

Perkins missing the front end of the 1 and 1 at the 245 mark was huge.

Not pointless!! Perkins, to his credit, showed up big time in the second half after a mediocre first half but the point guard needs to be able to make a high percentage of free throws. Hopefully, that will improve over the course of the season. But, yea, poor free throw shooting lost this game.

Been that way with is for several years; for some reason we have been a mediocre ft shooting time for quite some time now.

Four for eleven. That's about what I shoot too.

4-11 FT.

Pitt was 13-15 FT.

A +9 pt advantage on makes alone, if you factor in a normal %, its technically a 13 pt swing from the FT line alone.

That hurt the most.

This was why. Plus sabonis was non existent.

Really no excuse for this crappy FT shooting. Cost the game. That and Few's inability to draw even a resemblance of a play out of a TO.

I didn't get a chance to watch the game. Stats don't tell you everything, but looking at it all the numbers looked fine except the FT shooting jumped off the screen screaming at me. 4-11 in a game you lose by 1 point? Seems like the Zags absolutely gave this one away. 4-11 is atrocious. Somewhere between 50-60% FT shooting is bad, but sub 40% is an absolute embarrassment.

You lose 9 out of 10 close games with a FT% like that. Ugh

This isn't on the "team". Only 3 players even attempted a foul shot. Karnowski was his usual 2-4. Dranginis was 1/2. Perkins was 1/5 including the 1 and 1 front end; effectively 1/6.

Not a single ft attempt by Wilt or Sabonis, the most reliable shooters. Largely credit ATM's defensive tactics, forcing kickouts, but it looked to me that those guys might have gotten fouled once or twice.

So it comes down to Perkins, who otherwise had a wonderful second half scoring when nothing was working inside. Every player has strengths and weaknesses, and after losing the experience of last season I think people need to cut him some slack. It's different from practice, and it's different from hs when nerves come into play in a big national tv game. He'll never be Raivio, but he'll get it well enough to make 70-75% of those by the end of the year. Some rookies get tight at the line in their first chances at big moments. I think a golf analogy works here, for those that follow it. Jordan Speith is like Pangos; he can make the big putts as a rookie. It took Jason Day some time to get to where he's confident as a closer. Perkins will take this as motivation, big time, because he's a winner.

We all knew losses like this would happen early this year due to inexperience at the guard spots.

Free throws should be free points....they just dare ya to make points happen. Practice and practice more! Practice usually settles it.

I miss Raivio.

Too bad DS wasn't in the game mode today. He had a good day at the line against UW

We lost this game because of missed free throws. We also lost it because of made free throws on phantom fouls, and because several fouls against Wiltjer and Domas were not called.

I won't say we lost because of the referees, we should have made 70% of our free throws, another 3-4, and we probably win, BUT...

Wiltjer gotta draw more fouls. He was fading away way too much today.

Sabonis, well, don't foul as much. And learn to move on. Refs punished him for his antics later on -- always happens.

For all the analysis about turnovers, final plays, guard play, etc. the loss comes down to one of the simplest plays in basketball, the free throw. This is a correctable problem and maybe it takes a loss like this to drive the point home and to give an imperative to make sure it does not happen again, especially when post season comes around. If we had somehow won, the players and coaches might not think it is a big deal.

Don't. Worry about it.
This has been a weak point forever which only means that the rest of the game needs tightening up.
TAKE A DEEP. BREATH FELLOW ZAGS
It will be. OK

I don't see anyone freaking out.

I see people pointing out that 4-11 ft shooting is going to cost you a lot of 2 pt games.

I see MGK pointing out that basically only 3 players shot FTs, and that might be more indicative of something, why is Wiltjer not getting to the line?

Losing, always a sour taste, especially a winnable game - but what makes it worse was the fact it looked like we had no clue running down the floor with the ball and down one. Perhaps someone else can explain why in that scenario does our pre-season POY not get a touch to win it, why does the shot end up in the hands of the player whom I have the current least amount of trust in with the ball.

If the Zags do not get better @ FTs ..... they are simply less competitive. In a 1 point game ....... doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out the outcome.

This was my number one concern following the Washington game. Still is. Part of the disadvantage with more athletic players.

He seemed to be really pleased with himself when made the front end shot (the one out of 5 for the game ) on his next attempt. I wasn’t surprised at the following miss.

It's not like we haven't had a free-throw shooting problem for a couple years now. Someone on the coaching staff ought to know how to teach that skill. (Oh, well.)

Wiltjer, without a doubt. He shot the tech shots against Washington that weren't shown on the telecast.

Sabonis or Wiltjer

Is there a breakdown of FT shooting in the last 4 minutes? That's what I would look at first. I think I'd go with Wiltjer though, over Sabonis.

Melson is 10/12 on the season; Sabonis 12/14; Wiltjer 20/23
