The Bulldog actually started life in 1947, in the 2 story building just W of the location most are familiar with. It moved onto Hamilton St in the early 60's. Initially, there was only the entrance on Hamilton, later they created one on Sharp in an area that was once Pete's Barber Shop among other things. When the Bulldog was in the old building, there really were not that many if any college types hanging out there. The Bulldog denizens in those days were mostly neighborhood oddballs, malcontents, and curmudgeons as I remember it. Only when they moved did the college crowd start to frequent the place despite it's name. Someone should dig up a photo of Minnie, the barmaid from the earliest days that I remember and mount it in the new location.

Great idea and I will suggest that.
JayHoop, CaveBear, Section116, myself and a few others were in this pub yesterday early afternoon. They have a few pictures up (Eli Thomas, Carl Maxey, Joey August, and a picture of a hoop team maybe from the 40's. A photo of Mini and/or Armend(sp?) would be great.
Caution for anyone going there--they do not start selling beer until 3pm which shocked my thirsty compadres as we got there at 1:30.

Hondo, I went digging around on the internet and found this. I was looking for a picture or reference to Minnie but came up empty except for what has appeared prior on GUB.

Those are pretty good leads. I wish someone would attempt to contact the family and secure a picture of the pair. They started the Bulldog after all. I always thought Minnie had a $$ interest but didn't know for sure till now. I was six years old the first time I knocked on the door to sell empty bottles back for 1 cent a piece. Minnie answered and over the years she would oft times over pay me for my bottles. What a great pair they were.

Went to the new Bulldog on Monday for dinner and saw the new building. Very impressive. Nice menu at the restaurant. Interestingly, customers are not supposed to tip, per Sodexo policy. Not sure why they do that. However, it does cut down on the cost of the meal by 10% (20% if Mrs. Zag 77 is paying the bill). She calls me a cheapskate. I don't know why.
