Came across this blog from Kevin's girlfriend Katey. A good way to keep up with Kevin.

Okay so it has been almost 2 weeks since Kev has been in Gran Canaria! Let me fill you in on some updates from the island….

It didn’t take Kev more than a day on the island to realize that things in Europe are smaller (cars, parking garages, elevators, etc.).. This has led to some issues for him over there. For example dinging the car the first day he got it trying to get out of the parking garage…. He has also had some issues with doors over there. He has gotten locked out of the apartment (twice for 15 mins) because he couldn’t figure out how to work the keys. Also, when leaving the grocery store, he ran into the door thinking that it was going to open on the right when it really opened in the middle…In his words, “I feel like a chicken with my head cut off over here!” Looks like it is more than the Spanish language that we are going to need to pick up quickly.

Other than all of the difficulties that come with moving to an entirely new place, he has thoroughly enjoyed his first week and a half and is starting to get into his routine. He also got to go to the first soccer game last night, which he said was an awesome experience (Duh it’s the best sport ever )! He absolutely loves his teammates and staff and can’t wait to get the season started!! His first exhibition game is coming up in Ourense, Spain so he is looking forward to that!

Much more at her blog in the first 2 posts.

Wow, somehow I hadn't pieced together that Gran Canaria is the Canary islands. Being down off the coast of Africa, that's quite the trip. Pulling it up, looks like 875 miles to Sevilla, which might be the next closest team.

In the good news:

Tough news for one of Kevin's teammates: (http://www.courier-journal.com/story/sports/college/louisville/2015/11/03/former-louisville-basketball-player-kyle-kuric-will-have-brain-surgery-his-spanish-club-announced-tuesday/75104058/)

Former Louisville basketball player Kyle Kuric will undergo surgery to remove a tumor from his brain, his Spanish professional club announced Tuesday.

Kuric, who played four years at U of L and helped the Cards reach the 2012 Final Four, went to a hospital in Barcelona with a migraine, and doctors discovered the tumor, a release from CB Gran Canarias said.

The club said Kuric has a meningioma, which the Mayo Clinic defines as a tumor that "arises from the meninges, the membranes that surround your brain and spinal cord."

Kuric, a 6-foot-4 wing, has played the last three years in Spain, first with Asefa Estudiantes and then with Gran Canarias, where he signed last year.

11-03-2015, 01:13 PM
Thanks ZN, I was wondering why Kyle did not play, he was their best player up until now....

The team seems pretty tight group, perhaps isolation on a beautiful island contributes to that.

The fans of Gran Canaria remind me of those of GU.

I don't see fellow Canadian Levon Kendall on the scoring sheet, but he is listed on their roster.

He may not be laying at the moment, have a look at the article below, Kyle is not the only one at GC dealing with a brain tumour.

I know it is early in the season, but right now Gran Canaria is rated (tied) as the 5th best team in Europe....

Looking at the +/- it appears that ABLA made a run while KP was not on the court. The other point guard Oliver was -25 ...ouch!

Kevin hit as more three pointers (3 in 5 attempts) than four of his teammates did in 20.....

It was an away game....pretty sure that won't happen when they get home.

This game story (http://cbgrancanaria.net/noticias/english-news/herbalife-gran-canaria-uses-big-fourth-quarter-to-dump-reggio-emilia/) pretty much paints our boy Kev as hero of yesterday's Eurocup game:

Herbalife Gran Canaria uses big fourth quarter to dump Reggio Emilia
Kevin Pangos scored 8 points in a decisive 14-0 fourth quarter run as Herbalife Gran Canaria Las Palmas rallied past Grissin Bon Reggio Emilia 76-67 on Tuesday night.

The hosts trailed 55-61 midway through the fourth quarter when Pangos and co. stepped up. The victory saw Gran Canaria bounce back from a rare loss and improve to 4-1 to retain at least a share of first place in Group B at the midway point in the Eurocup Regular Season. It also extended the teams’ winning streak in regular season home games to 13. Reggio Emilia dropped to 3-2. Alen Omic paced the winning attack with 17 points and 10 rebounds, while Sasu Salin added 13 points, Eulis Baez 12 and Pangos compiled 10 points and 6 assists. Pietro Aradori led Reggio Emilia with 12 points, Amedeo Della Valle scored 11 and Achille Polonara and Andrea Di Nicolao netted 10 each.

Omic free throws and a Pablo Aguilar three-pointer gave the hosts a promising start to the second half. Omic netted 2 more from the line for a 49-43 advantage midway through the third quarter. However Polonara nailed a three and Aradori scored again to cut the deficit to a single point. After Baez and Rimantas Kaukenas traded baskets, the scoreboard showed 53-53 through three quarters. The lead changed hands on the first two baskets of the fourth quarter before back-to-back threes by Stefano Gentile and Ojars Silins – the second of which came with a foul – made it 55-61 midway through the fourth quarter. Pangos connected from downtown to ignite what turned into a 14-0 march that would decide the game. He added another three and 2 free throws in the run that also saw Baez score twice. Still Silins’s three gave Reggio Emilia hope at 69-64, but after Baez free throws and another three by Salin, the difference was 10 with a minute to go and the hosts could start to celebrate.

11-19-2015, 09:59 AM
Gran Canarias won its Eurocup game against Lemans and is now leading Group B 5-1. Kevin scored 14 points with 4 assists in the win.

Herbalife Gran Canaria Las Palmas scored a 77-62 victory over Le Mans Sarthe Basket to take sole possession of first place in the group and come on the verge of qualifying to the Last 32. After trailing by 3 at halftime, Gran Canaria used a strong third quarter to take control and led by as many as 17 after a pair of Albert Oliver baskets to start the fourth quarter. Chris Lofton singlehandedly outscored Gran Canaria 2-13 early in the fourth quarter to give Le Mans a chance at 61-55, but the hosts used triples from Xavi Rabaseda and Kevin Pangos to ice the victory. Alen Omic paced the winners with 18 points and 8 rebounds. MHP RIESEN Ludwigsburg swept German League rival ALBA Berlin 79-90 at Mercedes-Benz Arena in the German capital on Tuesday. Brad Loesing scored 18, David McCray 16, Royce O’Neale 14 and Mustafa Shakur collected 12 points and 10 assists for the winners, who led from start to finish after scoring the game’s first 8 points. In an all-Italian showdown on Wednesday, Enel Basket Brindisi beat Grissin Bon Reggio Emilia 86-81 for its first ever Eurocup victory. The teams traded leads throughout the second half and midway into the fourth quarter before Adrian Banks and Durand Scott made key baskets to put the hosts in lead for good. Banks scored 25 points to lead in victory and Alex Harris had 18 points for Brindisi.

Really nice story on FBA.com about our guy Kevin. (http://www.fiba.com/olympics/2016/news/canadas-pangos-making-a-big-splash-in-rookie-campaign) First, though, liked this pic from the Valencia game:

Canada's Pangos making a big splash in rookie campaign

LAS PALMAS (2016 Rio Olympics) - A lot of young players would like to be in the position that Kevin Pangos finds himself in.

Living in Spain's Canary Islands and playing basketball for a living, what could be better?

There's good weather, beautiful surroundings and competitive basketball.

Yes, Pangos, a 22-year-old Canadian point guard, is in a very good situation in his first year out of Gonzaga, where he spent four years playing American college basketball with the Zags.

He and his Herbalife Gran Canaria teammates are winning a lot of games, although on Sunday night, Valencia beat them, 86-61.

One big defeat has not spoiled anything for Pangos.

"I love it so far," he said to FIBA.com of his move to Europe.

"The island is amazing.

"The competition is great."

Pangos is turning the page after four years of an excellent university experience at Gonzaga in Spokane, Washington.

At the end of every one of his seasons, Pangos was a First-Team All West Coast Conference selection following his senior campaign, he was the WCC Player of the Year.

Pangos was Third Team All-America after his final year as well.

The experience with the Zags is something he will always treasure.

"That was a home away from home, or even home for me," he said.

"I have a lot of friends there, stay in touch.

"I watch them all the time, stay close to the staff and the players. It's close to my heart."

Pangos knows he has a terrific opportunity this season.

One of the great coaches in Spanish basketball history, the country's 2008 Olympic boss Aito Garcia, has recognized that Pangos is both talented and determined.

He has played the Ontario native about 26 minutes per game in the Liga Endesa, and in the Eurocup.

In the continental competition, Pangos has been on a tear, making 13 of his last 23 shots from behind the arc.

He is shooting a blistering 54.8 percent (17 of 31) from long range in the Eurocup on the season while averaging 14.1 points and 5.4 assists.

After Gran Canaria's last game, a 92-89 defeat at MHP RIESEN Ludwigsburg in Germany in which he scored 31 points, Pangos was named as the competition's Player of the Week.More story here. (http://www.fiba.com/olympics/2016/news/canadas-pangos-making-a-big-splash-in-rookie-campaign)

Wow, OZZY! I didn't even look at the other team's roster. Thanks for the heads up!

Kevin Pangos can do nothing wrong in Spain, today accounting for 23 of Gran Canarias' 83-78 win over Alba Berlin in Game 9 of Eurocup, clinching the top spot in Group B. He also had 5 assists and 3 rebounds.

This is truly Kevin's team to run now.

He and centre Alen Omic are playing consistently brilliant basketball.

By the stats you can see that he is in a groove, low turnovers, decent assist numbers and is killing opponents from the deep (combined ACB and Eurocup - 46.3%).

In the last 5 games (including one going 1/6) he is shooting 59.4% from the deep....

12-10-2015, 04:25 PM
Can't wait for Sunday's game at Real Madrid!

12-10-2015, 06:14 PM
So much for the nonsense that he doesn't shoot well on the road.

12-14-2015, 02:47 PM
KP and his teammates went down to the powerhouse Real Madrid 85-68 in Madrid last Sunday.

I still haven't mastered the art of pasting stat sheets to this site (ZN you are he master), but Kevin did have a rough game, playing a seasoned EuroLeague team.

Up against All-Star Sergio Rodrigues (and former Zag recruit Jeff Taylor among others) he led GC with 11 points on 2/9 shooting and missed his first free throw of the season (now only at 94.4%).

He also had 4 Assists 1 steal and 2 turnovers and was -23 on the +/-.

Chalk it up to experience, I somehow think that he will be better for the tough game.

12-14-2015, 03:08 PM
This week will be in interesting one for Kevin, first travelling today to Italy to take on Grissin Bon Reggio Emilia in the Eurocup, then up against ACB team UCAM Murcia .

Why is this interesting you might ask...................

Former Zag recruit (Ohio State Commit) Amedeo Della Valle is playing for the Italian team. He left OSU early last year after mostly riding the pine for the Buckeyes.

Della Valle is one of the starting guards and knows KP after watching him play while a Zag.

Next weekend GC takes on UCAM Murcia, and KP goes up against one of the top young point guards in the ACB in 24 year old Argentinian Facuno Campazzo. Campazzo has better numbers than KP, is slightly smaller and very quick.

He has plenty of international experience and started for the Argentinian National Team this summer, having a great tournament averaging 10 ppg / 6 apg.

KP will have his hands full, so I see this as a real litmus test to see where he is at as a rookie (hard to compare him against Sergio Rodrigues last game).

12-16-2015, 02:48 PM
I appreciate your insights here, Ozzy!

Kevin had a good one today in round 10 of Eurocup, taking down Grissin Bon Reggio Emilia 78-73, Kevin with 15 points and 7 assists.

Kevin's been out with an injury since the game with Strasbourg. Can't find any description of the injury, except that it seems to involve his face. I'd appreciate any info about the injury and prognosis anyone has....

Finally was able to do a little research, Kevin took a blow to the eye in Strasbourg. He has been back to practice this week and it appears that he will play tomorrow against the other team based in the Canary Islands, Iberostar Tenerife. I am assuming it is a home game as they lost last time against this team in Tenerife.

I do not expect him to start ahead of Albert Oliver, who has been very steady while KP has been off. GC 2014 has gone 5-1 (that loss against powerhouse Barcelona) since KP's injury and AO has been scoring and setting up his teammates to the tune of 10.1 ppg and 7.5 apg. Shooting 40% from the 3.

Here's hoping Kevin does come back tomorrow and settles back in to lead the team again sooner rather than later. He has a very solid rookie professional season and if he keeps the pace up will have a good chance of getting on the Canadian bench for the Olympic qualifiers in the Philippines. The Canadian team really needs a solid back up ball handler like Kevin after the disaster in Mexico.

Perhaps it wasn't just a blow to the eye, KP actually might have suffered a concussion against Strasbourg.

Google Translated;

The Canadian, based at Herbalife Gran Canaria, Kevin Pangos, who could return after overcoming a head injury, stressed that the team coach Aito Garcia Reneses has "very talented" to win on the track leading undefeated Strasbourg.

On the fitness of his partner Albert Oliver, Pangos believes it has "incredible." "I've been watching from the sidelines, trying to learn as much as possible and hopefully I can to rest now and try to play like him," he says.
The Canadian player states that he was "well and happy again", although it has said it has to recover the "physical ability" and adapt "to the rhythm."

About the Copa del Rey de Baloncesto, fom Wiki: (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Copa_del_Rey_de_Baloncesto)

Since 1987, the Final Eight format has been used. At the end of the first half of the regular season, the top eight teams from the Spanish League qualify. The eight teams play a play-off at one venue, over four days, eventually producing a winner. The Final Eight is one of the highlights of the Spanish sporting calendar.

The finals will be tomorrow, Sunday, at 10:00 AM. Live stats will be here. (http://www.acb.com/) Real Madrid is looking for its third straight win. It has won 25 times in the 80 years the tournament has been played. I believe this is Gran Canarias first appearance in the finals.

Good luck, Kev!

When Kevin's team played Manresa (about 40 miles north of Barcelona) on Sunday Feb 7th I was at the game. Talked to Kevin briefly before the game. He was in shock to see a Zag sweatshirt and a fan from Spokane. Very nice and polite young man and he had a good game and his team won. I was impressed by the quality of basketball played by both teams.

Later .. here's the answer: HGC moves on to the quarter finals:

Gran Canaria reaches quarterfinals despite home loss

Herbalife Gran Canaria Las Palmas reached the Eurocup quarterfinals by despite a 77-78 home loss against Limoges CSP on Wednesday. Three-pointers by Newley and Pablo Aguilar put Gran Canaria ahead, 29-26, early in the second quarter. McCalebb and Boungou-Colo allowed Limoges to tie the game, 42-42, at halftime. Traore fueled an 0-8 run which gave Limoges a 44-52 edge soon after the break. Gran Canaria stayed within 54-61 after 30 minutes sealed the outcome of the series behind a solid fourth-quarter performance from Salin and Omic. Pangos sank three bombs from downtown in crunch time to give his team a 77-75 lead. Free throws by Boungou-Colo and Matt Gatens helped Limoges win the game.

Omic got Gran Canaria going with a layup which Boungou-Colo bettered with a seven-meter bomb for a 2-3 Limoges lead. Will Daniels struck from downtown and a dunk by Boungou-Colo boosted the guests' lead to 2-8. Albert Oliver found Omic for a layup that a red hot Boungou-Colo bettered with his second triple. Salin joined the three-point shootout and matched Westermann's layup with a mid-range jumper for a 9-13 score. Xavi Rabaseda found his first points but Daniels sank one from beyond and Traore scored down low, added a rainbow jump hook and a baseline jumper to force the hosts to stop the game at 11-22. Seeley stepped up with a backdoor layup and fed Rabaseda for a fast break basket. A three-pointer by Pangos and a big basket by McCalebb fixed the score at 18-24 after 10 minutes. Omic scored in the low post early in the second quarter but Traore scored off a high post pick for a 20-26 Limoges lead. Traore nailed a jump hook and Boungou-Colo bettered Baez's basket with a triple. Omic took over with a layup-plus-foul and free throws by Boungou-Colo tied the game, 42-42, at halftime.

Traore buried his trademark jump hook immediately after the break but Omic quickly answered with a layup. Gran Canaria stayed strong on defense but started to use longer possessions to run the game clock down. An unstoppable Traore scored again in the low post and a tip-in by Boungou-Colo gave Limoges hope at 44-48. The hosts had been limited to just 2 points in 5 minutes and back-to-back layups by Frejus Zerbo and McCalebb boosted the guests' lead to 44-52, after a 0-8 run. Newley rescued Gran Canaria with a three-pointer but Gatens answered from downtown. Oliver and Omic made free throws off a Gran Canaria timeout but Traore buried a mid-range jumper for a 51-57 Limoges lead. Mark Payne hit foul shots which Seeley improved with a big triple. A buzzer-beating layup by Traore gave Limoges a 54-61 margin after 30 minutes. Traore split free throws early in the fourth quarter but Newley followed a jumper with a driving layup to keep Gran Canaria within 58-62. McCalebb stepped up and singlehandedly boosted Limoges's lead to 59-67 with over 6 minutes left. Omic ignited the crowd with a big slam but McCalebb did better with a wild triple. Salin hit free throws and a layup by Baez sealed the outcome of the series, 65-70. Both teams, however, kept fighting for a prestigious win. A couple of three-pointers by Pangos kept the hosts within 74-75 in the next-to-last minute. Pangos downed another triple but free throws by Boungou-Colo and Gatens allowed Limoges to win the game, even when Gran Canaria was the series winner and reached the next round.

They will play the Polish team Stelmet Zielona Gora on March 15 and 23. That's cool.

Interesting side note on the next Eurocup opponent.

Stelmet leads the Polish league and started this year playing in the top flight EuroLeague competition.

Guess who is the top scorer and good buddy of PK (and I would think KP knows him a bit as well)?

Mateusz Ponitka.

That's him next to KP.

Should be interesting

Ozzy, thanks for all this awesome info on Pangos! Very fun to see (minus the head injury part, and whiplash with no actual head impact can cause a concussion, since it rattles the brain). I still miss watching him play.

03-23-2016, 10:42 PM
Stelmet Zielona Gora wins in the last minute, 86-83. Kevin with 12 points.

Kevin played a much different game today (perhaps dictated by the opponent) shooting only long range shots and was actually -10 on +/-.

Still due to a great away game, on total points they move on to the semi finals against Turkish powerhouse Galatasaray.

Galatasaray is an interesting team with very even scoring and a 6'7" two guard in Blake Shilb and NBA Veteran Stephan Lasme at centre.

The keys for HGC to move past them will be 3 point shooting and whether or not Galatasaray can contain HGC's big man Omic.

They actually have a chance to meet Strasbourg in the final (the team that KP was injured against)

Kevin selected to the All-EuroCup Second Team.
Very high honors for a rookie and he has proven he is a EuroLeague caliber player.

It will be interesting to see if one of the EuroLeague teams try to peel him away from Gran Canaria next year.

Good for him!

Will we see Kevin in NBA Summer League?
2015-16 All-Eurocup First, Second teams announced (http://www.eurocupbasketball.com/eurocup/news/i/6te4n3l6chkvxgt3/2015-16-all-eurocup-first-second-teams-announced)

Pangos’s rookie season was one to remember. He helped Gran Canaria come within a shot of returning to the Eurocup Finals by dishing the ninth-most assists (4.8 apg.) in the competition and ranking third in three-point accuracy (51.2%). Pangos was also second on the team in scoring (11.9 ppg.). He recorded one of the best games of the regular season with 31 points at MHP RIESEN Ludwigsburg. Pangos showed he was built for big games in the knockout stages when he averaged 6 points more per game in the second legs than he scored in the first legs.

04-15-2016, 09:05 AM
Will we see Kevin in NBA Summer League?

Maybe. There is a real chance he makes the Canadian senior team and there is somewhat of a conflict between the FIBA Olympic Qualifier Tournament July 4-10 and the Summer Leagues. The Orlando and Utah SLs were the same period last year, with the Vegas one being a little later - started July 10 through 20. He may be able to make the Vegas one. He may choose Summer League over Team Canada...but my understanding of KP is he would play for Canada anytime, given the chance.

04-25-2016, 12:57 AM
After a rough couple of weeks, Kevin Played a very good game this weekend helping GC beat Andorra 98-85.

KP the facilitator was on display against Steven Holt's Andorra team on Sunday. While not doing much of the scoring ( 8 points on 2 of his 6 threes attempted) in his 23 minutes, Kevin had 11 assists which, from memory, is the highest total since pre-Gonzaga days. To top it off he recorded no turnovers which is interesting since Holt would be someone who knows him (and his moves) better than any coach in Spain.....

Gran Canaria's victory solidifies their top 5 position in the ACB behind EuroLeague teams like Barcelona, Madrid, and Laboral Kutxa Vitoria. They have 5 games left with two against weaker competitors. If they win next weekend's game against EuroLeage team Unicaja they pretty well have it locked up.

Kevin's 11 assist / 0 turnover performance is the sort of ball control that will have the Canada basketball coaches really take notice after the debacle in Mexico City.

Thanks ZN, great work as usual.

Great time to be heating up from the three for KP!

A great footnote for this of you who have followed this thread the past 5 months.

American guard, Kyle Kuric, who early in the season had to stop playing due to a Cancer concern has played the last two games. I have not been able to find anything more, but the fact that he is playing again is good news for the team. He was the leading scorer after 7 games although he does not appear now to be getting big minutes.

He ain't done! Time to get his ass to Team Canada's training camp and help us qualify for the Olympics!

He should get a real good look as he has another year in his contract with GC and has had a very solid rookie season.

I wouldn't be surprised if he ends up on lists of top ACB first year players..

Canada really needs a floor general who can control the tempo and keep the turnovers down.

All you fans who yearn to see KP can meet him during Hoopfest weekend in Spokane. That is not good news for him playing for Canada is summer as we are supposed to be in Europe playing exhibition games June 20-29.

Stupid if Team Canada hasn't invited him into camp....with so many NBA players questionable this summer, KP has a great shot at the SMNT.

Oh...both Unicaja and Laboral Kutxa are trying to scoop up KP fro next year. Both much better teams than Gran Canaria.

Maybe a change in clubs coming for Kevin? From Eurobasket: (http://www.eurobasket.com/Spain/news/449332/Kevin-Pangos-may-agree-terms-with-Unicaja)

Kevin Pangos

Unicaja Malaga (Liga Endesa) is in talks to bring in 23-year old Canadian ex-international guard Kevin Pangos (189-83kg-93, college: Gonzaga, agency: Priority Sports) who played last time at Herbalife Gran Canaria. He has a double citizenship as he also holds Slovenian passport. In 33 Liga Endesa games he averaged 10.8ppg, 2.3rpg and 4.5apg last season. He helped them to make it to the final and supercup semifinals. He received also Eurobasket.com All-EuroCup 2nd Team award in 2016.

Among other achievements Pangos' college team won WCC Tournament for two years in a row (2014 and 2015).
Pangos was also a member of Canadian international program for some years. He played for Canadian Senior National Team back in 2009 and previously for University National Team in 2013. Pangos represented Canada at the World University Games in Kazan (Russia) three years ago.
He graduated from Gonzaga University in 2015 and it is his second season in pro basketball.

Pangos' game is described as: Yet labelled by most of pro scouts as "the next Steve Nash", he is so good that he has been called in Senior National Team at 16. Compared to Steve Nash at his age, he has ... best shooting touch and passing skills, and seems to be more mature. Huge upside at the point, of course...

He has a Slovenian passport?

Yes he does. Makes him much more valuable to Euro teams as he is not considered an import player -which are limited to vary degrees in Euro leagues.

Panathinaikos is coming on strong. A Euroleague team with a deep pocketed owner. He may be looking at $1.5-$2M a year in NBA equivalency. i.e. ~800K net (after tax) with all expenses paid (housing, food, car etc.).

Starting July 9, it seems Kevin will be playing for the Atlanta Hawks' D League team in the Las Vegas Summer League. His teammates there will include Diamon Simpson from Saint Marys.

Kevin officially has an offer on the table from Greek power house and Euroleague team Panthinaikos.

there was talk about this a month ago and then it went quiet. Supposedly KP was holding out for an NBA out-clause and the ability to play SL. Maybe this means he got what he wanted - but it is just an offer at this point. I think it is about $1.0M across two years, but I also think that is "net". So maybe equivalent to a $1M per year NBA contract - which seems more than he would get in the NBA.

Funny back story rumor here - the owner of Panthinaikos is pretty eccentric, volatile and supposedly tries hard to stock his team only with Greeks. That Pangos name may have come in handy here.

Atlanta signing Jarrett Jack doesnt help KPs chances to stick with Atlanta. there was talk him or Bryce Cotton had a legit shot as the 3rd string PG for Atlanta. That dream seems dead, unless they ditch Hinrich somehow.
