Walsh Qualifies for Third Straight U.S. Amateur Championships

Zags' senior continues strong summer with second-place finish

GRAND RIDGE, Texas -- Sean Walsh is at it again. The upcoming senior on the Gonzaga men's golf team tied for second at a qualifier for the U.S. Amateur Championships Monday.

Walsh was seven-under-par (137), two strokes behind the winner, in the two-round qualifier at the Tangle Ridge Golf Club. He had 19 pars and 12 birdies in the36-hole event on the par-72 course that played 6,835 yards.

Monday morning, Walsh birdied four of the first nine holes, before finishing at three-under (69). Later that afternoon, he improved by a stroke with five birdies on the back-nine. The Keller, Texas native had just five bogeys during the qualifier.

Kolton Crawford had the top qualifying total at 135 (-9). He had 21 pars and 12 birdies. Crawford bogeyed three holes. Garrett Reband tied Walsh at seven-under.

The qualifier is another top-10 finish this summer for Walsh. Last week, he placed 10th at the Trans-Mississippi Championship, after winning the North and South title a few weeks ago.

Last year, Walsh was 16-over in the two rounds of stroke-play at the U.S. Amateur Championships, and missed the cut for match-play. He advanced to match-play before falling to the second-seed in 2013.

The 2015 U.S. Amateur Championships begins Aug. 17. The six-day tournament will be played at the Olympia Fields Country Club in Olympia Fields, Ill.

Walsh begins the Southern Amateur Championships in West Point, Miss., Wednesday at the Old Waverly Golf Club.
