According to his coach Frank Holloway at Barking Abbey Secondary School in Harlow, UK, Western Kentucky University is "recruiting Barking Abbey’s Josh Steel, a 6-4 senior guard. ... South Carolina, Texas A&M, Duquesne, Davidson, FIU, Louisville and Gonzaga are among those who have shown interest in Steel."

Check out his highlights, including Josh's interesting use of the backboard on 3s at a 45 degree angle to the backboard, and the ankle-breaking he administers midway thru the highlight video:

Looks like he can shoot and dunk. I wonder how he would do against better competition?

Nice that they got to film in a WCC facility! LOL

A little bigger than Germayne Forbes.

I like this kid...He certainly passes the eye test. While he does play in England, he appeared to be head and shoulders above everyone else in regard to talent.

I saw some film on him about a year ago; the kid's legit.

I would think Davidson would be in the lead for this guy...they have had success in GB before...

He gets up pretty easily that's for sure. Hard to tell how much of impact he could be given the competition.

Tight stroke, solid handle, crafty around the basket, and can dial it up from LD. I think cross between cross between Raivio and Gray.

And athletic quick jumper. Can we get him here for Hoopfest weekend?

My nephew is a secondary PE teacher and plays in an adult BB league in the UK. (As an aside, we attended one of his games in Suffolk a few years ago and I was the only one cheering. His teammates remembered me when they met me again at his wedding last year.)

I emailed him and asked him if he could find out anything on him.

First he emailed this video link.

Then he emailed this info:

I have had a look into the player and found out some information, it may also help if you know a little about how basketball is structured in the UK .

At a High School level there is a set up of 'basketball academies' which are schools which have a strong basketball focus and will offer athletes scholarships based on their ability. I know this is very common in America but there are only a few of these in England. Barking Abbey, where Josh is a student, is one of these academies. There is a possibility they may play Copleston in the final fours this season who are a team based in Ipswich (20 minutes from us). If this happens I will be able to give you direct feedback on him as a player as some of Copleston's players also play for my team. I have asked one of the coaches at Copleston who has seen Josh play and he said that he is a very talented player.

The next level of basketball in the UK is National Basketball League (NBL) where Josh plays for Kent Crusanders in Div 1. This is one league below the top league in the UK which is the BBL (this is the only professional league in the UK). His team won their final and Josh was MVP.

He has also been part of the England junior squads since a very young age.

This website is very good for information on British Basketball and has some articles which mention Josh.

This is Josh's adult team

This is his High School team

He looks very very good. And, such an interesting background we simply have to have him - we are the international team and can leave no part of the EU untouched. Our weather is like London and tacos are a lot like bangers and mash.

Interesting read. I wonder why the sports specialty is no longer being funded and if the sports specialties are considered successful?
