If your opponents are continually playing a slow it down, drag it out game plan the available time to make FG attempts is reduced.

When you efficiency is higher (#1 in fg%) an extremely high number of attempts isn' really as important as it might be.

My "wow" stems from the discrepancy of attempts to makes. It is amazing to me that they have made more fgs than any team while attempting only the 107th most.

Not sure I want to see Zag FT% ..... although it would be interesting to compare FT% now with FT% on March 11 (day after last WCC Tourney game). I hope it improves.

Most teams would kill to have 1 guy shooting over 60% for any 9 game stretch and we have 2 shooting better than 73%!!!!!
That's just flat out ridiculous. Add to this that our perimeter D is getting better and the likelihood (hope) that our worst free throw shooting games are behind us and I like our chances moving forward

What are the chances we could get closer to the record?

I finally found it.

Gonzaga is currently shooting about 53.5%. This is the highest since 1989 when Michigan shot 56%. From 1990-1992 the leaders all shot 53.something. So at this pace, it truly would be the highest in over 2 decades.

Another amazing stat.

What are the chances we could get closer to the record?

A few tenths of a percent maybe with WCC play. An important distinction is that there was no 3 point shot until the mid 80's. The Zags are currently at .596 on 2 pointers, but it's really hard to compare because good shooters would shoot the open 20 footer back then, but logic would suggest there were fewer long shots going up.

The game was different then as well in that there wasn't nearly the level of contact allowed that there is today. Scoring was higher even without the 3.

So it's apples and oranges; kind of like comparing baseball stats from the dead ball era and the steroid era. Given all that, GU's shooting % is pretty remarkable.

Another one.

Gonzaga is tied with Virginia and West Virginia for most wins away from home.

9 per ESPN.

This one is really good.

So far Gonzaga has played 23 games. That's 925 minutes. So far Gonzaga has trailed for only 56 of those minutes! That averages out to less than 2 minutes 30 seconds per game.

(Unofficial number. I scrolled play by play and kept the tally in my head.)

Fun stat of the night was having Kevin going 2 for 9 from the field, but having the team aggregate be over 55%.

College guys screwing around with a 24 point lead led to some angst from the perfectionists. But once Karno was reinserted late in the game, the defense smothered the Tiger mini-rally and the margin bumped right back up to 18.

23dpg
02-03-2015, 08:40 AM
This is by far the most dominant Gonzaga team ever! There's way too much angst over the big wins.

So far this season, Gonzaga has played in only 4 games where they didn't win by more than 10 points. 4 of 23!
In 2005-06 Gonzaga's 29 win season with Ammo and Batista they had 18 such games in the regular season. And all 5 of their tourney (WCC and NCAA) games were 10 points or less. That's 23 of 33 games.

I've tracked these numbers over the years... I don't recall ANY GU team being in the top 50 in so many categories... ever.

Kyle Dranginis leads the team in FT% at 84% (21-25). I wouldn't have predicted that going into the year. He was a 56% FT shooter coming into the year.

Also, according to the broadcast tonight on Root, the WCC leads the nation in FG% at 45%.
