Three Zags Ranked Among Tops in Class

SPOKANE, Wash.—Three Gonzaga baseball players were recently honored for their professional potential as Mitchell Gunsolus, Andrew Sopko, and Gage Burland were all determined to be among the best professional baseball prospects in their respective classes by Perfect Game.

Gunsolus was named the 62nd-best prospect in this year’s senior class. An infielder from Kenmore, Wash., Gunsolus has started every game in each of the last two seasons. During that span, he’s consistently gotten on base, finishing with one of the top two on-base percentages on the squad both seasons. The left-handed batter also has finished among the top five in batting average, total bases, hits, and slugging percentage as well. Gunsolus is one of the Bulldogs’ five seniors this year.

On the list of current juniors, Sopko was considered the 77th-best pro prospect according to Perfect Game. The right-handed hurler started 15 games for Gonzaga last year, going 5-4 with a 3.64 ERA, the second best on the team. His 96.1 innings pitched and 61 strikeouts were also number two for Gonzaga last season. As a freshman in 2013, the hurler made 11 appearances, nine of which came in relief.

Lastly, Burland came in at 52nd on the list of incoming freshman. Also a right-handed pitcher, Burland led Spokane Valley’s East Valley HS to a league title as a senior. The Baltimore Orioles selected Burland in the 26th round of the MLB draft this year, but the righty elected to come to Gonzaga rather than join the minor leagues.

Gunsolus, Sopko, Burland, and the rest of the Gonzaga baseball team will open the 2015 season on Friday, Feb. 13 with a 10:00 a.m. contest against Utah Valley. That game will be the first of four games over the weekend in Northridge, Calif., for the Zags.
