Reflections from attending first away game (LMU)...

So many Zag fans at the game! My prior frame of reference was from watching away games on TV when you typically see the small cluster of Gonzaga fans behind the bench during time-outs huddles. Could not get over the fact that Zag fans filled most of one side of the arena. This was really highlighted when LMU cheerleaders did the t-shirt toss. They were hard pressed to find LMU fans to throw to on our side of the arena. It was great and the Zag fans were vocal!

Loved what appeared to be a mini-Lithuania cheering section, with several fans young and old wearing green (what I assume to be) Lithuania National Team shirts. There were a bunch of little girls in the middle of this group with a banner for Domas Sabonis (will try to post pic).

There was a great moment during the early minutes of the game when out of nowhere cheering and clapping began and grew louder as Ronny Turiaf walked through the stands and down to his seat behind the bench.

Regarding the arena, we were in the lower section, row M, but the rise of the rows was steep enough that we still felt very close to the action. Liked the little band at one end and the student MC that directed events like the t-shirt toss, pizza giveaway, homecoming queen and king award, etc - was kind of a nice personal touch with the smaller arena. Hated the ten minutes at halftime when we were stuck in a major people traffic jam trying to get from the section behind the bench to the other side to go outside where concessions were sold. LMU could probably double or triple concession sales by having vendors walk through the stands at halftime.

Was impressed by LMU fans, very vocal and supportive even when down 15+, but not obnoxiously so (not sure I could handle being in Provo). Looking at all the WCC, NIT and NCAA banners hanging up, as well as the sign about it being "Hank's House," was reminded of the sad ending of Gathers' career and the success this program has had in the past. Sure would like to see their program gain some prominence again to help the WCC gain stature.

Have been to most home games this year and Battle in Seattle, but our first away game had a special vibe to it. Overall a great experience, would highly recommend it to others and will certainly try to see at least one away game next season as well.

Forgot to mention, instead of going in the main entrance, used GPS to try a more direct route to arena. Couldn't get in that end, so looked for street parking and right off campus there is a "GONZAGA AVENUE" leading up to the arena as one of several streets named for Jesuit schools.

Had to go back to the main entrance, had free parking due to construction near the arena, had a shuttle service going that worked very well. It was full of Gonzaga fans.

Props to LA Chapter for a very successful and crowded pregame function. Games funniest moment was when the Zags got up 20 an LMU fan got to his feet and began the usual "over rated" chant. This was greeted by Zag laughter and none of his fellow LMU fans picked it up so he quickly sat back down.

Weather OK? :)

Felt a little homesick for the snow in my Spokane yard and had to spend six dollars for sunglasses at Santa Monica Beach before the game to deal with the 73 degree sunshine, but other than that, we were able to tolerate the weather.

Was sorry we couldnt make it to this, saw a lot of LA Chapter shirts at the game. Met fans who had driven up from San Diego, San Clemente, a recent grad who had flown in from Boulder, etc.

When we got up by 20, a pretty good size group started a "up by 20" chant. It was fairly loud and audible enough for the LMU student section across the gym to chant "we can't hear you". During this chant, zags lost the twenty pt lead but then quickly gained it back and the "up by 20" chant resumed - much louder and with more zag fans joining in. There was no response from the LMU side. It was pretty funny.

The up by twenty chant came through on the TV nicely. Nice to see our fans traveling well with the team.
