Beards for a Cause

SPOKANE, Wash.—Some beards were impressive, some beards were barely visible. All of them, however, were for a good cause.

Each member of the Gonzaga baseball team recently took part in No-Shave November. Through the event, the Zags wanted to support Miles Mortensen, the son of former Zag Clayton Mortensen, who’s currently in the Kansas City Royals organization. Miles was recently diagnosed with Neuroblastoma, an aggressive childhood cancer. He’s undergone three rounds of chemotherapy to try and rid himself of the disease.

“We are always trying to teach our team that baseball isn’t the only thing in life; that real life situations like this exist and can hit close to home,” said Gonzaga assistant coach Steve Bennett. “Our guys do a great job in the community, and we added this as a great way to show support not only for Miles, but for all cancer patients and survivors.”

While treatments like chemotherapy force cancer patients and survivors to lose their hair, No-Shave November tries to make up for that.

“The goal of No-Shave November is to grow awareness by embracing our hair and let it grow wild and free,” said Bennett. “Donate the money you usually spend on shaving and grooming for a month to help educate about cancer prevention, save lives, and aid those fighting the battle.”

Coaches on fellow West Coast Conference clubs San Diego, San Francisco, and Santa Clara also grew their facial hair throughout November, raising awareness for causes close to their respective programs. Eventually, Bennett hopes every West Coast Conference baseball team forgoes shaving throughout the month.

“We eventually want to get the entire conference involved in an event like this. Raising awareness for causes like these can only help find a cure.”
