Lots of good stuff to build on...huge wins...on the big stage... a loss would have been a big set back if you care about rankings...Melson looks like a stud muffin....
It was probably a good thing that Gonzaga had a close game (at least near the end) going into the Arizona game next weekend. Nonetheless, they didn't defend well in NYC. Yes, they held both teams to low percentages, but both teams shot a combined 58 foul shots....largely because GU kept fouling to stop the dribble drive. They are kind of fortunate that both UGA and SJU shot poorly from the foul stripe. That won't happen next weekend at Zona.
Eric McClellan is a needed player in this rotation. He's the kind of guy that you can stick on Rysheed Jordan.
well first off a win is a win, team gutted it out and are pre season nit champs! make room for more hardware in the trophy case.
positives, melson did not wilt in the bright lights, indeed we can win with a new hot hand on any given game, overcame adversity in the way of some terrible calls.
negatives, for the first time we did not put away as team when we could have. still need work of free throw shooting
takeaways, 2 games coach can use as constructive teaching moments, especially on defense. hype about final four I think is just that hype. we've got work to do.
I was also very pleased to see Gonzaga make a couple of big time defensive plays in crunch time. Not just Gary taking the charge, but also Dranginis and Wesley cutting off the baseline on that SJU driver.
Congrats and good luck in going forward. I think that some of the defensive problems are the addition of new players into a very complicated set of switching defenses. I think that this improve as the year goes on and will be ready as we get ready for league. I still think that 1 loss going into league, will be a good start.
All I have to say is........... Michigan won the NIT Pre-season Tipoff 3 Thanksgivings ago and ended up going to the Championship game that year........... let's see if that holds true this year!!!!!!! GO ZAGS!!!!!!
