Junior Callahan, Incoming Freshman Burland Taken In Draft

SPOKANE, Wash. – Gonzaga University left-handed pitcher Derek Callahan and incoming freshman right-hander Gage Burland of Spokane’s East Valley High were the only Bulldogs selected in the 2014 Major League Baseball Draft in Saturday’s final 30 rounds of the 40-round draft.

Callahan, a 6-4, 215-pounder, was taken by the New York Yankees in the 16th round as the 482nd overall pick. Burland was drafted in the 26th round by the Baltimore Orioles as the 481st overall selection.

Callahan, a junior from Edmonds, Wash., started three of his six appearances this past season, going 0-3 with a 12.12 ERA while pitching 16.1 innings. He fanned 17. As a sophomore in 2013 he made eight starts and his 50.2 innings pitched were fourth on the team. He finished the season 2-2 with a 4.26 ERA.

In the West Coast Summer League he went 8-2 with a 2.25 ERA with 62 strikeouts and 24 walks in 76 innings of work. Callahan’s frame, the fact he’s a physical left-hander and has been clocked with a 94 mph fastball in tbullpen is what impressed the scouts, according to one Yankees website Pinstripe Alley.

Burland, 6-2, 195, was pegged by Perfect Game as the No. 2 right-hander in the state of Washington, No. 54 nationally and the 158th overall player nationally. He signed a national letter-of-intent with the Bulldogs last November.

Both players have the option of playing for the Bulldogs or signing a professional baseball contract.
