Since Grier left GU to become head coach at USD, the Zags have an advantage in the W-L column, but it seems like every single game is a big struggle and goes down to the wire. Of course Grier knows how Few thinks and knows his schemes, but the same should work vice versa. I wonder if there is a mental block for Few, coaching against his long time good friend. Roy Williams has coached North Carolina against Kansas, his former school, 3 times in the NCAA Tournament and has lost all 3. The first one was a woodshed whoopin'. It kinda seems like Roy has a mental block when it comes to playing Kansas, and I wonder if Few has something similar matching up w/ Grier. There has been a substantial talent disparity in most of those games in GU's favor. Some people can compartmentalize and stop being friends w/ their opponent during the course of a game, maybe some have a hard time doing that.

We are everyone's biggest game every year. Of course, Grier does know his plays etc so there's some help for USD.Go Zags!!! -
I think that the issues is that since Grier and Few are so close, it makes it easier for Grier to prepare his team for Gonzaga. He knows the system just as well as Few does, knows Few's personality and tendencies, etc. The fact that USD has beaten GU only twice in Grier's tenure says a lot more, though, IMO.Comment

The Grier factor is that he gets the Zags to play the kind of game they don't want to play...a slow, physical grinder.
The fact that GU has only lost to Grier twice since he took over USD has to do with talent differential. GU's better teams may have not liked the grinders, but they were talented enough to survive them. Obviously, in a couple of games USD wasn't able to dictate pace due to mistakes on their end (turnovers, bad shots, etc.), and so blow outs happened.Comment
