Santos Captures Medalist Honors, Zags Win Jim West Challenge

NEW BRAUNFELS, Texas – Gonzaga University captured the team title and sophomore Raychelle Santos won her third collegiate title as the Jim West Challenge concluded Tuesday.

Santos shot a final-round 4-under par 67 – one shot off the school record - and finished with a 54-hole score of 212 over the 6,128-yard, par 71 Bandit Golf Club layout. Her 67 matches her career-best set last season and ties the second-best round in school history held by two others. Her 54-hole score of 212 is second best in school history.

Freshman Ciera Min, the 36-hole leader, shot an even-par 71 on the final day and tied for second at 214 with Iman Nordin of host Texas State University and Jenna Hague of Ball State University. Min’s 214 ties for the third-best 54-hole score in school history. Junior Alice Kim also finished in the top 10 in a tie for ninth at 225. Min’s 214 ties for the third-best 54-hole score in school history.

“I’m really happy with our win. It was a crazy, great finish,” Gonzaga head coach Brad Rickel said. “We started out real slow. The wind started picking up and it was overcast like it wanted to rain but never did. We sort of righted the ship in the middle of the round. TSU was playing an unbelievable good round. We hung in there and played the last four or five holes 6-under and came back to win by a bunch. We were behind. We finished strong and they (TSU) stumbled coming in.”

The Bulldogs took a 9-stroke lead into the final round and fired a 287 for the fourth best 18-hole score in school history to finish at 878 and an 8-shot lead over the hosts. The 878 is the second-best 54-hole score in school history.

The team title is the seventh all-time with four of those coming last season during Gonzaga’s march to its inaugural NCAA Women’s Golf Regional.

“It’s a great way to start the spring season. I’m happy for Raychelle. A 68 and 67 in same tournament is pretty impressive golf,” Rickel said. “She’s happy about starting her spring that way.”

Rickel had praise for his entire team.

“Ciera played an amazing tournament. Her wrists were hurting her but she battled through it. It was great golf for a freshman. I’m proud of her composure, how she goes about her business,” Rickel said of one of his rising young stars. “Everybody had good rounds. Han (Wu) had a triple-bogey and shot 2-over. Alice had a real rough start and hung in the rest of the day. I’m really proud of this team, our effort and really proud of how we finished out our last six holes of the tournament.”

The Bulldogs return to action next Monday and Tuesday to defend their title at the UC Irvine Invitational.
