View Full Version : No ticket to the NCAA dance for any WCC team with 10+ losses? Not so fast.

The view has been posted on this board that no WCC team with 10 or more losses will receive at at-large bid to the NCAA tournament, and thus would have to win the WCC tourney in order to dance. (Whether that is an appropriate result is a discussion for another thread.) Right now, 5 WCC teams have 10+ losses, and 3 others with 9 losses are unlikely to complete the season without an additional defeat. The majority of D-1 teams have already lost 10 or more games. One could fill nearly all of the 68 NCCA bids with teams which currently have 6 or fewer losses. That won't happen! Some teams with poor records will dance, and some with good records won't.

Every year, the NCAA tournament includes several teams with double-digit losses for several reasons. 1.) Automatic qualifiers. Since these are based on conference tournament champions, and since every year has some upset winners, some surprising teams dance. 2.) Weak AQ conferences. Right now, one third of the conferences have NO teams with fewer than seven losses, and several have NO teams with fewer than nine losses.
The fewer surprises the conference tournaments produce, the more at-large spots are available to teams with a quality "body of work" but a less than stellar overall record. Those judgements are subjective and provoke outrage and debate, but really, are there more than a dozen or two teams in any year which have played so well as to deserve a shot a the national championship?

Bottom line: increased parity in the WCC means that most teams' only chance for an NCAA bid is to win the WCC tourney. But a team losing the WCC tourney final after finishing the season strong will be "on the bubble" when the committee hands out bids, even with 10 losses and even if the name on the jersey is not GU or SMC. Strange things happened in the past, and this year will be no different!

BYU would have a shot due to the strength of their nonleague schedule. With 9 losses Lunardi has them as first team out.

Yep, BYU is the only one and ifSt marys loses that many more, they will be out. IMO, there is no way a WCC team could get in with 10 or more losses. The power conferences always get the benefit of the doubt.

As it stands. GU is in 100% Other teams will need to win WCC tourney to get to March Madness. This is a 1 bid league this year. ( Unless there is an upset in WCC tourney )
