    Gaels Analysis

    Hi Gonzaga fans,

Looking forward to a big game between our two teams. Both our clubs are in a state of limbo right now, us reeling after three mind-boggling and frustratingly close losses, you guys struggling badly with the injury bug.

In short our starting lineup this year is rock-solid, our problem lies in a lack of depth off the bench. Holt and Waldow are our two best players offensively, Waldow is a little more steady with good hands and has expanded his repertoire over past years, while Holt can be a streaky shooter but is always a good passer and driver. When Holt is on he cannot be stopped, last year 2nd half in Spokane is an example. James Walker III and Kerry Carter are our other two starting guards. Walker is a good driver and excellent 3-point shooter and is very athletic, but he tends to be a little trigger-happy at times. Defensively he is a risk taker, generating a lot of steals but sometimes getting out of position. Kerry Carter has come out of nowhere for us. A JC transfer, he has absolutely lit it up with the 3 ball, one of the better strokes I have ever seen. He plays very hard but is still adjusting to the D1 pace at times and can get a little lost, but overall has been very solid. Beau Levesque is our 4 man, a little undersized but a good driver and can shoot the three. He is pretty athletic and can score in a variety of ways. He can get into foul trouble and make stupid plays at times however.

Jordan Giusti is our biggest weapon off the bench, a defensive specialist of sorts similar to Mike Hart. Won't score or shoot much but plays very hard defensively and hustles all game.

Our biggest weakness right now lies in that 4 spot as we are missing our back-up Garrett Jackson, a talented and athletic USC transfer, who is out with a knee injury. This leaves us with Dane Pineau, a Freshman Aussie, being forced into minutes when he is not yet ready.

If I were you guys, I would look to drive on Levesque and Waldow and get them in foul trouble, as their backups Hodgson and Pineau are rather inept.

From what I have seen from you guys, this is possibly the most unathletic team you have had in a while, especially with Dower and Bell out. Similarly to us, you guys seem to be able to shoot the three well, and Karnowski can be a force inside.

I'll predict Gaels 83 Zags 79 in a tight one.

An excellent analysis by the Gael fan. He might even be correct in his analysis, which I am sure is based on the fact that Bell and Dower are injured. One thing his analysis did not include is the fact that Randy Bennett will not be on the bench, in what is St Mary's biggest game of the year so far. Randy and the Gaels must be punished for breaking the rules, and they will feel the result of that punishment Thursday night against the Zags. Without Bennett on the bench the Zags prevail.
Go Zags!!! The Best Is Yet To Come!!!

Coleman and Nunez may be among the most athletic Zags in some time, or maybe ever! Currently short on experience, but certainly not athleticism!

        Depth

I believe if the Zags jump out to an early lead they will feed off of the crowd and win this game. St. Mary's may have more experienced players, but the Zags are tough matchup for anyone in the Kennel. Zags by 6 in a grinder.

          Thanks for the post.

I think our key will be to run and run...use our (dwindling) depth to fatigue the Gaels. Shem really needs to stay disciplined, as I think they will try to get him in foul trouble.

Reign 3s and we'll be all good; if we don't, it'll be tight.
          Go Zags!!!

Um, GaelFan, all due respect but the two guys who just replaced Bell and Dower are far more athletic, though not as seasoned......and Edwards is not a huge dropoff from Karno....your #1 threat is 3 point shooting which the Zag Braintrust adamantly refuses to deal with. Coach Bennett, my good friend, will be missed if only to check on his current haberdashery....and you can tell him I said so..

I guess you are referring to Coleman and Nunez. I see they haven't been starting. Sure two bench players may be athletic, but are you going to argue that your current active team as a whole is more athletic than any one of your teams in the past 5 years? I sure wouldn't say so.

And I didn't say anything about Edwards being a dropoff from Karnowski....

I'll give you that. The starting five that you will see on Thursday will be slower and smaller than any group that we've started in the last couple of decades (Heytveldt-mushroom-suspension lineup excluded).
“No team in the country has a better winning percentage against power conference teams since 2017 than Gonzaga... the Zags are playing above average teams in the best leagues in the country and winning 78% of the time.”

Hmm, not sure I agree MCMM. KP is arguably as athletic as any pt guard save for JP (I have blocked Meech from my memory) and GU has never had players as long as athletic as GC and AN.....but if they do not "start" then I see your point.

Our athletic players play about a combined 15 mpg. We are not athletic and the team playing off of the kennels energy? Still no students. Its the Gaels to lose in this one.

Nunez has had a full year working with the GU system. I don't see any drop off at all playing him. Surely since we've seen how good he is. We've need one like him for quite some time. Coleman has had enough experience to know what he's faced with. He'll find a way. As far as Edwards goes, get that kid to the line and he'll score plenty. Additionally, I have lots of renewed faith in David Stockton. he's got the wind............at his back too!

While I feel for Sam and Gary on a personal level I do not feel at all bereft of talent. The Fewian three guard lineup, never terribly exciting to me, is history, gratefully. Both DS and KP have some more elbow room to operate. More PT for Nunez, Coleman and Edwards has me enthused. Barham seems renewed and I hope the coach will look Meikle's way as well. The only downer has been KD. With quality guards coming in next year, he's not exactly showing what he can do. A lineup of KP, Josh, Coleman, Nunez and KW sounds pretty good, even if it doesn't start.

I don't understand why posters here are so down on Dranginis. I think he's been progressing nicely and some more PT(which he will get now with the injuries) is all he needs.
"After holding open practices during his first three seasons, Romar closed them to reporters last season, citing the "Gonzaga factor." He felt his team was compromised before the 2004-05 game against the Zags, that the opponent awaiting him and beating him 99-87 in Spokane seemed a little too well prepared."
