Last season, rookie Robert Sacre was thrust into the lineup for the Los Angeles Lakers as the result of multiple injuries in the frontcourt. Heading into the 2013-14 NBA season, Sacre might get called upon once again by the Lakers coaching staff. Sacre said the following during Lakers media day on Sept. 28 about how heís improved over the offseason:

"I've really focused on getting better all-around and just being a dynamic basketball player."
With Dwight Howard signing with the Houston Rockets over the summer, Sacre has an opportunity to earn a considerable boost in minutes from head coach Mike DíAntoni. Although still raw and rough around the edges, Sacre did show improvement last season and may earn some minutes in the rotation at center this season.

http://espn.go.com/blog/los-angeles/lakers/post/_/id/37384/why-kaman-and-sacre-bought-a-cow#more

EL SEGUNDO, Calif. -- NBA players are notorious for spending their money on all sorts of lavish delights from sports cars to jewelry to clothing, but a couple of members of the Los Angeles Lakers took it to a whole other level by buying a bovine. That's right, Chris Kaman, Robert Sacre and Lakers strength and conditioning coach Tim DiFrancesco bought a cow.

This isn't like Billy Crystal's pet cow Norman in "City Slickers." The three of them are going in together on a full cow's worth of beef after it's been to the butcher, or approximately 400 pounds of cuts of meat for their freezers.

DiFrancesco, who has picked up the nickname "Grass-Fed Tim" around the team because of his belief in the health benefits of eating grass-fed beef, came up with the idea after connecting with a farm that raises grass-fed cows down in San Diego.

Kaman is getting half, 200 pounds, while Sacre and DiFrancesco are getting a quarter, 100 pounds, each.

It was originally supposed to be a four-way split, but longtime Lakers trainer Gary Vitti backed out.

"Gary Vitti ran out of freezer space, so I think heís out," Kaman said. "So, I got to pick up the slack. Iím happy to, though."

Freezer space was an issue for Sacre, too, so he did something about it.

"I had to go to a Best Buy to go buy me a 15 cubic foot freezer," said Sacre, who estimated that the freezer and the beef will end up costing him about $1,300 combined. "Itís, uh, itís intense."

The trio of beef eaters scheduled the meat delivery to arrive after they return from the Lakers' upcoming eight-day-long trip to China to play two preseason games.

Lakers' 2013-14 Player Previews:

http://www.nba.com/lakers/features/1314_season_preview

Robert Sacre

2012-13: In three starts due to a pile up of injuries, Sacre averaged 6.7 points, 3.0 rebounds and 2.0 blocks.

Preseason: The Gonzaga product grabbed a team-high eight rebounds in the team's second preseason contest vs. Denver.

Sacre proved to be a serviceable backup during his rookie campaign, particularly when all three Lakers bigs went down with injuries in early January. In the preseason, he showed improvements made over the summer with his athleticism as well as his jump shot, showing some range out to 18 feet.

He remains behind Gasol, Kaman and Hill on the depth chart at center, and playing time will likely be minimal, unless the injury bug strikes. But the Lakers can afford to have him gain experience with the D-Fenders again this season, where he started seven games in 2012-13. Since being drafted, Sacre's been a favorite teammate of his fellow big men in particular, as he always pushes them in practice with a mix of competitive energy and positivity.

Post-game video interview (http://www.nba.com/lakers/video/2013/12/07/131207Sacremov-3068259)

LA Times story, (http://www.latimes.com/sports/basketball/nba/lakers/la-sp-lakers-fyi-20131208,0,5357945.story#ixzz2mqBaNMtg) "Robert Sacre waited and waited; now it's his turn"

Sacre has been a stream of energy the last two weeks, initially moving past Chris Kaman ($3.2 million salary) as the first big man off the bench and then Jordan Hill ($3.5 million) into the starting lineup.

Sacre is the team's lowest-paid player ($788,873) other than rookie Ryan Kelly. He had 11 points and five rebounds in 17 minutes of the Lakers' 106-100 victory Sunday over Sacramento, the first NBA game Sacre ever started.

"I know what they want from me right now is to be a high-energy guy and play hard," he said.

On a team with so much uncertainty next summer, Sacre is one of four players under contract beyond this season. He is guaranteed $915,243 next season, about $33.5 million less than Kobe Bryant, Steve Nash and Nick Young can earn in 2014-15.

The Lakers quietly offered him an extension a few days after losing the Dwight Howard sweepstakes last July. Sacre happily signed.

"They have confidence with me to get me a deal like that," he said. "Obviously, they know I'm a good player and I know I'm a good player. I don't want to toot my horn, I've just had to wait for my opportunity to shine."

About that waiting. He went from finishing with the second-most blocked shots in Gonzaga history to finishing NBA games without even entering them.

He had minuscule averages of 1.3 points and 1.1 rebounds as a rookie. The biggest news he made during the off-season was teaming with Kaman to buy a grass-fed cow. They divided up the supposedly healthier meat.

Now he's making headlines for basketball-related things.

"I couldn't be happier for a kid like him. This guy's always up," Lakers Coach Mike D'Antoni said recently. "He sometimes gets the short end of the stick because he's such a good guy. He'll play 30 seconds or whatever. At some point you go, you know what, he needs to play."

Robert Sacre has been a pleasant surprise in 2013-14.

.

COMMENTARY | Los Angeles Lakers center Robert Sacre went relatively unnoticed in his rookie season as the last man on the bench on a team that was supposed to go straight through the Western Conference and into the NBA Finals.

It's an understatement to say that the season didn't turn out well for the team as superstar big man Dwight Howard bolted for greener (flatter?) pastures in the Lone Star State for less money, leaving the Lakers in limbo. Instead of a clear path toward the future, the Lakers are now left wondering what their team will look like in the coming seasons.

Fortunately, for Lakers and all NBA fans, that future looks to include Sacre, the No. 60 overall pick in the 2012 NBA draft. Not only is the Canadian a riot off the floor, but this season he's also bringing some substance to the court with his defensive ability and effort on the glass and in practice.

About that effort in practice -- it's what fans don't see or often know about but can directly attribute to his increased playing time and improvement. Head coach Mike D'Antoni attributed his recent insertion into the starting lineup to the constant work and energy he's brought to the table.

By the numbers

The sample size is relatively small here -- Sacre has played in just eight games and started two this season. Interestingly enough, he's pacing to equal his total number of games played from a year ago (32), though he should far exceed that number given his recent insertion into the starting lineup.

Given the caveat of the relative short length of the season, Sacre's per-minute production has nearly doubled in several key areas. First, he's scoring 14.2 points per 36 minutes this year as opposed to 7.6 in 2012-13. But Sacre isn't a scorer. His best contributions to the Lakers come when he rebounds and defends. He's averaging 3.6 blocks per 36 minutes this season as opposed to 1.8 in his rookie year.

His improvement in efficiency is exponential. Sacre is posting a 19.6 player efficiency rating to this point as opposed to 3.4 during his rookie campaign. The effectively means that he's producing in all facets of the game more than he ever has. He's earned the right to see what he can do over long stretches, and he's trending in the right direction

Robert Sacre steps up, slows Randolph; Xavier Henry looking like a good investment for Lakers

Lakers forward Xavier Henry has been a very pleasant, and inexpensive, surprise for L.A. this season. JOHN BAZEMORE - THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
By Mark Medina, Los Angeles Daily News
POSTED: 12/17/13, 10:19 PM PST | UPDATED: 35 SECS AGO
MEMPHIS, Tenn. >> The soft-spoken Robert Sacre who always preaches teamwork and deflects praise showed his playfully cocky side.

The Lakers' second-year center had just played a large part in securing the team's 96-92 victory Tuesday over the Memphis Grizzlies at FedEx Forum by holding bruising forward Zach Randolph to 18 points on 7-for-22 shooting. Sacre soon relished the moments he matched up with Pau Gasol and Jordan Hill in practice where he apparently dominates.

"When Pau gets mad, he starts grunting and groaning and then puts Jordan Hill under the basket," Sacre said. "Me? Nah, not me. I make him shoot jumpers all day."

Hill interjected and playfully argued the accuracy of Sacre's story.

"No one can keep me off the offensive boards," said Hill, though he was limited with only two points on two field goal attempts and two rebounds in eight minutes because of four fouls. "You think Robert can keep me off the offensive boards? If you believe that ... "

Hill laughed playfully in disbelief. But then again, few likely would have believed Sacre could limit Randolph, whom Sacre likened to UFC fighter Quinton "Rampage" Jackson for his bruising style.

"He's so physical," said Sacre, who has climbed the depth chart this season after the Lakers selected him 60th overeall in the 2012 NBA Draft. "I try to match that physicaltiy and keep him from trying to be aggressive. I wanted to make sure he got the ball as far aaway from the basket so he had to make moves."

The approach worked.

"He played fantastic," Lakers guard Kobe Bryant said of Sacre. "He comes in and plays hard and does everything we ask him to do and more."

I don't know what D'antoni is trying to do. He has started Rob, played him a short spell, then pulled him and given the rest of the minutes to Kaman and Hill, even though Rob has done a good, not great, job anchoring the center. His rebounds have gone up, his blocks and assists have gone up, shoots FT pretty good.
Didn't expect him to be the starter, but do expect the coach to manage the players in a way that is most effective for them and the team. Unlike Mark Few, D'antoni has nowher near an 80% winning record for his career. Not sure he is the best guy to have at the Laker's helm. At least Rob gets SOME minutes.

I was at the game last night, and I 100% agree that the offense was more fluid with Sacre in the game. He knew the offense, was setting up the guards well and moved really well without the ball. I wore my Zag hoodie to the game - was hoping to get a little Pargo, Sacre love. Alas, all I got was two $10 bud lights.

Thoroughly enjoyed the game and especially the excitement at the end!

Rob played 27:18. He had 10 points, 3 rebounds, 6 fouls, 1 block.

As noted above: (from Lakers' official site)

But Los Angeles' first win in two weeks was overshadowed by a bizarre ending.

The Lakers had eight available players coming into the game. Then Nick Young twisted his left knee in the first half and Chris Kaman fouled out early in the fourth quarter. When Jordan Farmar left with an injury in the final period, that put Los Angeles at five players.

Sacre committed his sixth foul with 3:32 remaining, but stayed in the game because coach Mike D'Antoni was out of healthy bodies. The Lakers were assessed a technical foul.

That's funny. Other than the fact that Rob is probably literally twice as big as that guy, I do see the resemblance.

Amid a Lakers season filled with flimsy defense, there remains one consistent presence that hustles on every possession. Amid a team filled with players who occasionally try to pad their statistics, the Lakers have one player who does not worry about such a thing. Amid a roster filled with potential free agents who have uncertain futures, there’s one player that has no such concern.

His name is Robert Sacre, and Lakers coach Mike D’Antoni cannot rave enough about him.

“He works harder than anyone on the team,” D’Antoni said. “It’s not even close — in the weight room, out on the floor, in practice. He’s trying to make himself into a player. That’s one of the reasons why I’m going to go with him and reward him.”

Sacre has averaged a modest 5 points on 48.5 percent shooting and 3.7 rebounds in 15.8 minutes entering the Lakers’ (24-48) game today against the Phoenix Suns (44-29) at Staples Center.

But such numbers provide an incomplete snapshot explaining why Sacre has morphed from Mr. Irrelevant as the 60th pick in the second round of the 2012 NBA draft into the top of the frontcourt depth chart. They also explain why D’Antoni often has chosen Sacre over Chris Kaman’s offensive versatility and Jordan Hill’s energy either to back up Pau Gasol and occasionally play with each other.

“He played very sluggish when we got him. Now he’s more athletic,” D’Antoni said. “That’s his work in the weight room and the coaches getting him to be more decisive in his moves with going to the basket and dunking. Instead of loading up, he is quicker off his feet. He’s always been a communicator. His knowledge of the defense is good. He shores up a lot of stuff that we need. He’s our best defensive player.”

It has been so much fun to watch Rob's continued development. There are times when I think Rob's overall improvement, from where he started to where he is, is even more impressive than Kelly's.
