Bulldogs Baseball Having Successful Summer Seasons


SPOKANE, Wash. Gonzaga University Baseball pitcher Sean-Luke Brija will represent the Walla Walla Sweets Tuesday as a member of the 2013 West Coast League All-Star North Division Team.

Brija, who redshirted the 2013 season for the Bulldogs, was named as one of nine Sweets to the All-Star Game. In 15 appearances, Brija has pitched 16.1 innings with a 1-1 record to go with nine saves and a 1.10 ERA. The game will be played at Royal Athletic Park in Victoria, Canada at 7 p.m.

Fellow Zags Scott Silva, Beau Bozett and Taylor Jones are also Sweets teammates of Brija. Walla Walla is tied atop the WCL standings at 22-17 with the Wenatchee AppleSox.

Bulldogs also highlight rosters of other teams in the West Coast League. Outfielder Brock Slavin (.297 batting average, 10 stolen bases, nine doubles and 18 RBI) and Catcher Joey Harris (.208 batting average and 8 RBI) are having solid seasons with Wenatchee. The AppleSox are coached by Gonzaga alumi Ed Knaggs, AJ Proszeck and Eric Lane.

Karl Myers and Nelson Benjamin have spent their summers with the Kelowna Falcons.

Elsewhere, a number of Zags of taken their talents north to play in the Alaska Baseball League highlighted by Kenny Smith and Andrew Sopko. Both were named to the ABL All-Star Game roster for the South Team.

Smith has thrown 26 innings with a 2-2 record and 1.73 ERA for the Anchorage Bucs. Sopko, also with the Bucs, is 3-0 with a 2.84 ERA in 31.2 innings including a complete game.

Payden Cawley Lamb and Jimmy Sinatro are also in Alaska and are members of the Goldpanners. Lamb has hit .243 with 10 stolen bases and 8 RBI. Sinatro carries a .269 batting average in 18 games.

In the Northwoods League, Derek Callahan and Cabe Reiten have had strong summers for the Green Bay Bullfrogs. Callahan bolsters the Bullfrogs pitching staff with a 2-0 record in 44.1 innings with a 2.03 ERA. Reiten has hit .215 while driving in 11 runs and connecting for two home runs.

In the Far West League, Caleb Wood and Nicholas Minteer have played for the first place Humboldt Crabs. Wood has produced a .304 batting average with 10 stolen bases and 8 RBI while Minteer has contributed a .273 average with six doubles and 10 RBI.

Mitchell Gunsolus is spending his summer with the Chatham Anglers of the Cape Cod League. Gunsolus has provided a consistent bat for the Anglers with a .277 batting average, eight RBI and six stolen bases...
