Today's S-R contains an excellent explanation of the NCAA rules surrounding the binding (or non-binding) nature of the letter of intent. It's a really good read for anyone harboring a little bit of a fuzzy understanding regarding how this odd recruiting device is utilized.

I appreciate this explanation and certainly expect many of the best future student athletes to go this way, but can see the coach that, needing to plan his teams future around recruits, will forego offering to a player that seems like such a diva.
That being said, the inequities in the LOI system are widespread, well known and systemic. The concept needs to be revamped. There should be a place for a future SA to declare that he is signing with a specific coach, and if the coach leaves, the SA can leave too (probably NOT to the new school for the coach...too much conflict of interest). LOI's should be for more than one year, but could include qualifiers. This is a tricky one, the academic part would be easy, but setting minimum in PT and/or production on court are too easily manipulated by the coaching staff.
There has to be a better way. If somebody could come up with a full program, they could send it to the NCAA, I'm sure they can't come up with anything.
