Marco Gonzales Wins 2013 John Olerud Award

LUBBOCK, Texas – Former Gonzaga University star pitcher and first baseman Marco Gonzales claimed the 2013 John Olerud Two-Way Player of the Year Award as announced by the College Baseball Foundation. Gonzales will accept the award at College Baseball’s Night of Champions ceremony Saturday night in Lubbock, Texas.

“I am extremely honored to accept such a prestigious award,” Gonzales said. “This means the world to me and my family. I want to thank my coaches and teammates for believing in me and for giving me the chance to be on the field every day. This is simply a testament of my support group and how important they are to me and my passion for the game of baseball.”

Gonzales edged out Mike Ford of Princeton University and Michael Lorenzen of Cal State Fullerton for the award that honors the player who excelled both on the mound and in the field...

Gonzales becomes the fourth recipient of the award since it was first presented in 2010. The former winners include Brian Johnson from University of Florida (2012), Danny Hultzen from University of Virginia (2011) and Mike McGee from Florida State University (2010).

The John Olerud Award was announced in conjunction with several prestigious college baseball awards including the Brooks Wallace Award, The Johnny Bench Award, National Pitcher of the Year and the Dick Howser Trophy.

Outstanding accomplishment for Marco. People who know Olerud only through his pro career don't realize how good a pitcher he was. Olerud put on a pitching and hitting performance for the ages in a double header at Pecarovich Field when he was playing for the Cougs. As I recall, he pitched a shutout and hit a home run in the first game, followed by two more home runs in the second game when he played first base.

Angelo, thanks for pointing that out.
