Gonzales Named John Olerud Two-Way Award Finalist

LUBBOCK, Texas – Gonzaga University junior Marco Gonzales will look to add a major award to his resume as the pitcher/first baseman was named one of three finalists for The College Baseball Hall of Fame’s John Olerud Two-Way Player of the Year Award announced the organization Saturday.

The Fort Collins, Colo., native is coming off a stellar season with the Bulldogs that saw him selected 19th overall in Major League Baseball's First-Year Player Draft to the St. Louis Cardinals. The left-handed hitter and pitcher finished the season with a 7-3 record and a 2.80 ERA in 106 innings. At the plate the Co-West Coast Conference Player of the Year led the Zags with a .313 batting average, two home runs and 26 RBI.

Gonzales was also recently tabbed a second-team All-American from the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association, Baseball America and Perfect Game.

The other two finalists are Mike Ford of Princeton University and Michael Lorenzen of Cal State Fullerton.

Ford, the Ivy League Player of the Year, batted .320 with 6 home runs and 38 RBI. On the mound he finished 6-0 with a 0.98 ERA. He was a three-time All-Ivy selection and was a semifi#nalist for the Gregg Olson Award.

Lorenzen was drafted with the 38th overall pick by the Reds in last week’s MLB Draft. He batted .335 with a team-leading 7 home runs and 54 RBI for super regional participant Cal State Fullerton. On the mound, he fashioned a 1.99 ERA with a 3-0 record and 19 saves.

The winner of the John Olerud Award will be named on June 29 in Lubbock, Texas, as part of College Baseball’s Night of Champions. The event also features the announcement of the win#ners of the National Pitcher of the Year and Brooks Wallace Award. The Johnny Bench Award and Dick Howser Trophy are also presented, as well as the 2013 National College Baseball Hall of Fame inductions.
