Most Competitive Guard
Silas Melson (Portland, Ore./Jefferson)
2014, SG/PG, 6-3, 170
AAU team: ICP Elite
Offers: Gonzaga, Washington, Oregon State and Colorado State
Interest: Oregon, Colorado, Memphis, Tennessee, San Francisco
Melson plays in full attack mode on both ends of the floor. He gets to the rim on the break and sticks jumpers from all over the court. Melson is a very good scorer who can make plays on and off the ball. He works to defend as well with his ball pressure and great effort and energy. Melson is more of a shooting guard attempting to transition to the point, but regardless of how that turns out he will be an excellent all-around guard.

From ESPN. I sure like this kid's game. It would be nice to get a quick commitment from him. I like the guard talent we are going after in 2014 & 2015. Nice mix of talent.

If he's a good kid and has the grades......sign him up! Looks like he has a bright future. 1 or 2.

Wow.

Do we know who he likes? Sure seems like a player any team would want.

I would take Melson in a heartbeat. A very skilled player with major upside potential. It would be great if Gonzaga could get Melson and at the same time get some traction with the ICP Elite AAU coaching staff, as ICP has several more extremely good young players in the pipeline. Unfortunately, it may be very difficult to get this young man away from Oregon or some of the famous East Coast schools, but I hope we can.

Here is a link to the ICP program. They are doing some great things with Inner City Players, and a few of their current players are headed to the big time in the very near future. Check out Greyson Smallwood. A legitimate 42 inch vertical leap in a 6'10" player with looooong arms. Class of 2015. He needs to gain 25 pounds of upper body muscle but a very interesting player. Kansas or UK will be sniffing around him soon I predict.

Sometimes I hate comparisons...but his game reminds me of Kevin Foster. Silky smooth movements, nice jumper and can get to the rack when needed.

I think Perkins is an uphill battle, although were not out of the running just yet. I think Melson would be a fantastic pickup if we were able to do so. Not sure where we are in the game as far as conversation or where we stand on his list, I just hope we can snag him up.

While I can only go off of the short highlight video, I do like what I see. He has nice elevation on his jumper and can make it with range, he also seems to have a solid mid-range game of pull-up jumpers. His length and athleticism looks to be better than Gary Bell's, and Bell is a very solid player for the Zags. I would be happy if we land him.

More Anthony Ireland than K Foster, who is very athletic. Looks like a Kendall Small replica. Not sure GU would need both. 6-3 seems program height generous.

Personally, I'd tale Ireland over Foster. Ireland was absolutely fantastic in the Conference tournament this past winter.

Agree. I thought that Ireland made the people around him better, I realize that is weird given the team's record last year but there it is. I am not sure one could say the same thing about Foster. I have a feeling if you put Ireland on last year's SCU team instead of Foster and they win a few more games.

Could be the coach, though. I love Max.

"... my lead schools are Gonzaga and Washington."
...
"Coach [Mark] Few of Gonzaga says I'm always playing hard, and he sees the potential for me to become a good point guard even with me already being a good shooting guard." said Melson. "In this offseason, this AAU season, I'm just trying to get better and I'm in the gym everyday."

Nice video interview of Silas, also.

This morning (6/8) I was listening to KJR 950 sports radio in Seattle. It is also the station that broadcasts UW football and basketball. It covers the Huskies incessantly and barely acknowledges GU. The Dawgman program (guess what it focuses on) this morning featured an interview with some guy named Aaron Beach who is apparently covers high school recruiting around the PNW. He is at a big AAU tournament this weekend where there are a ton of AAU teams. He said that due to recent change-over of assistant BB coaches at UW that Gonzaga had the inside track on Silas Melson.

Melson is a perfect off guard for us, and would pair well with any point guard (*cough* Josh Perkins) that we might land. Sort of a Gary Bell type player, in that he's an excellent 3 point shooter and a high energy, lock down defender, while being slightly undersized at the 2.

Beach is a good guy but a complete homer. TO wit: we lost Ray who was one of our best recuiters. If anythingwe're at the disadvantage. I wonder how Ray's departure plays into this woeful recruiting situation we've watched in the past few months.
This presnt kid looks good. I haven't seen (in clips) or notices how his footspeed is. Anyone know? Is he quick side to side or north-south?

Melson is my second favorite guard behind Perkins. Would be great backcourt mates. Melson is sneaky explosive as well. I like the Bell comparison except Melson is bigger, more athletic and can score in more ways.

For a high school kid going into his senior year, he is sure muscled up - not going to get pushed around a lot. Another similar attribute to Bell.

Bell was a borderline top 50 recruit; Melson just cracks Rivals' 150 (148). I haven't seen Melson, but the above makes it sound like you think he's more talented than Bell. Am I missing something?

cggonzaga

Personally I do and that's no knock on Bell. If we're talking upside going into college then I'd take Bell. at the same stage though I like Melson.

Kind of slim pickings for players on campus right now for a visit ... Stockton, Coleman, Dranginis, Barham, and Nunez.

Oh, well. Hope Silas has a good visit with whomever's on campus.
