One thing to remember when we're looking for that additional big to eat up minutes and spell our current scoring front court is that we don't have to have a complete player 20 & 10 kind of guy. First of all, because those guys are hard to come by. We need someone who will compliment our current guys, who by most accounts can score the ball pretty darn well. Sure SD needs to develop another post move...but give him the chance. Sure Shrek got a bit predictable by season's end, but he's just a frosh.

I think our guys will improve. They'll do what they do well, even better next year because more will be asked of them. Perhaps it's just a bit scary for us all because it's been a good long while since we haven't had a good shot blocker protecting the rim.

I think the only piece of the puzzle missing for the front court is defense and rebounds. 4 blocks and 10 rebounds would suit me fine. Chip in a couple of points to keep defenses honest, but we're going to be guard-oriented again, and as has been pointed out on these boards, that might be a good thing.

I'm thinking we need Mark Spink 2.0.

I'm thinking we need Mark Spink 2.0. Or Scott Spink 2.0...how soon will the next generation of Spinks be ready to wear Gonzaga uniforms?

I get the Spinks all mixed up..who's the one who graduated around 1993? Cool cat and an awesome player.

Great OP.

According to the record book I have, Scott Spink graduated in '94 and Mark Spink graduated in '01. Never saw Scott play, but I remember Mark as a skinny forward who played real scrappy as a defender and rebounder.

The descriptions of Luke Meikle make me wonder if he could be that kind of player. One can hope.

You're going to have a fight on your hands if you make another comment like that one. Scott and I are the same age, and we are nowhere near old enough to have a son in college. Why, he would have had to be born in 1995, when I was only . . . uh, nevermind.

Carry on.

Cool, thanks. No wonder I'm confused, I was in college at the same time as both Scott and Mark. Wasn't there another, younger brother also?

I would love for Meikle to be another Spink. Spink was a bit of Mike Hart before Mike Hart was Mike Hart. He would just throw everything on the line in games. He could really frustrate some of the bigger forwards with his tenacity.

I don't think Meikle's game is quite the same as Spinks. He seems a bit more offensively gifted but defensively limited in comparison. However the body type definitely matches. I have high hopes for him.

Spinks' vertical leap is a bit below average, but his fighting spirit will live forever!

One of my favorite Zag memories is of Spink draped all over Madman Madsen frustrating the heck out of him.

I was just going to post something similar as I have had fond memories from that game also. I remember Madsen was so big and strong but seemed perplexed why he was having such a hard time backing Spink down and keeping the ball in his hands all at the same time.

I vividly remember Spink in that game as well. I just groaned when he was first subbed into the game because I thought this was Madsen's chance to go wild for Stanford. The vision that most comes to mind is Spink with his head down and leaning his shoulder into the much bigger Madsen for all he was worth. Considering the little bean-pole kid he was at the time, his defensive performance on Madsen was truly amazing, unbelievable competitive heart.

Spink was a Stacey Augmon clone. One of the best ever!

Poor little GU. Never gets any talent.

Maybe someday we will kick down some more doors

Many have thought like Spink over the years. but what was it that the "Spinks" were thinking about? They mustered up some serious Gonzaga love and pride in order to sacrifice injury and scoring stats to win.

Every team needs a guy who just obsesses about the ball and simply goes and gets the ball no matter what. Call it a nose for the ball or having intangibles, but rebounding and stealing and stopping opposing offenses are all about "Getting the Ball"!

Who will be our Hart next year? Who will be the "nose"? Who will bet the basketball "Go Getter"?

Can any of our walk-ons create this successful niche for themselves?
