The backcourt (including wings) will be very good, that much we already know. Good quality, good depth.

The utter quiet of any news involving bigs tells me 1) no Juco Junkers are being considered, or 2) Juco Junkers are being considered but waiting for the end of their Juco's quarter in June for visits, or 3) Tommy has an overseas kid lined up.

But one thing is clear: if no quality can be found at the PF/C position, and with only two horses in the barn, the frontcourt could be--

Like a very large truck or a dozer?

Full of potential options?

So vast there is no end to the possibilities?

May not contain an all american type influence?

Contain two 290 lb 7+ foot behemoths that nary a guard will want to ever drive the paint for fear of being eaten alive.

:)

There are lots of possibilites that we can guess our front court will look like....

That's his point. With only 2 in the frontcourt right now, we've got something like 20-30 minutes of playing time that have nothing. Doesn't matter if those 50-60 minutes are top of the line.

i was thinking the same thing the other day . . . its all about how we can come up with 80 minutes out of those two positions. Dower and Karno are really honestly 40 (maybe, and thats being generous) and where in the world do the other 40 come from? Nunez? For a few minutes..... Rotate in and out Edwards/Meikle? The big guy from the crew team? Maybe another three to five minutes . . . (and both Edwards and Meikle were at first expected to redshirt)

I really do like our guards next year. Three of the best in the country, and our SF Coleman is going to be solid-- actually strong at the three next year.

My guess is that Few will make lemons from lemonade, run a lot more next year and have four smaller guys + interior person of the moment. (Hard to call Nunez a smaller guy at 6-8).

But at least we have not panicked, and signed someone obviously doomed to fail, but whom we have to give some minutes to. So far, I still see 20 + wins next year, but our interior will be like 250 other college teams, instead of being like none other.

Assuming we have what we see and no more( which I hope changes). I agree that PK and Dower will be playing as much as possible. That will be probably about 50 to 55 minutes. That means during the first half of the season Barham will see major minutes and one of the freshmen will get about 10 minutes. Then when Nunez gets his chance he will give us a thin but solid frontline. Now to me this also means that Dranginis needs to play solid and big in his backup of the 2/3 guards.

The coaches may have to play a more aggressive small lineup and try to get more turnovers before their big men get the ball. We have Pangos, Stockton, Bell, Dranginis , and Coleman. This gives us mucho fouls and players to give others a rest. I feel very good about our team and cannot wait to see them in Vegas.

Given the lack of good news coming out of the off-season and pessimism, it would probably be best if the Zags just forfeit the 13-14 season now and concentrate on getting everyone on the same page for 14-15.

Sure, it would be embarrassing but so would losing to the Whitworth JV, maybe they should just join the intramural "A" division and let them fight it out there.

Kids are lined up at Fews office door to play for the Zags. But none are a perfect fit for Few. So even if none are the perfect fit, Few still may just get the best he can for a warm body. I wonder if that gamble is worth it? Or is Few forced into it?

Can a kid negatively affect chemistry badly enough that it cancels out the gains? Or does the 2 yrs of playing experience make a JUCO that much less of a risk than getting the best freshman we can get to get 4-5 productive symbiotic years from.

Either way, Few does well but he really seems to cut it close lately.

A couple of those guys appear off the table already. Thomas committed to Troy last week (http://www.troytrojans.com/news/2013/5/16/MBB_0516131259.aspx), and it looks like Lekan Ajayi committed to Eastern Michigan (http://teamnigeriabasketball.com/lekan-ajayi-commits-to-eastern-michigan/) in March. Last I saw, Ali's got quite a few school after him. I don't know if there's a favorite or not.

Tend to agree! In fact, maybe we should demote the entire squad to the interscholastic team, cut our losses and dump the coaching staff. I'm sure there are several here in the forum that could do better than an 80% winning for more than 10 years. We might have to drop to Div II or III, but we can do it!

Well, I am not saying there isn't a lack of depth and things would certainly be far rosier if Davis had come or we had more depth - there IS legitimate concern. But, it can get a little out of hand.

We have some serious talent returning in the backcourt and we might have a powerful 3 spot rotation next year. I seriously doubt we will be as consistent as last year, but we ought to be able to be a little more dangerous a wild card, too.

Maybe we should hold off on the torches and pickforks until the season is, what. . . a couple weeks old? Just a thought.

I honestly don't think playing Drew Barham at the 4 will be too much of an issue during conference play. Take Saint Mary's for example. Beau Levesque is 6-6 and plays the 4 and Drew is also 6-6. (Memphis had him at 6-7 http://www.gotigersgo.com/sports/m-baskbl/mtt/barham_drew00.html)

Also, if Dower is producing consistently (which we have yet to see over long periods of time) I see no reason why he shouldn't play 28-30 minutes per game. He also must be rebounding. Harris, Olynyk, and Hart were GU's top 3 rebounders last year, so it will be necessary for Dower and Karnowski to box out every possession.

Who was it that was giving hints of a player coming here, MDABE80? Or was it somebody else? Whoever said it, I hope he wasn't talking about Moser or Davis. This board hasn't had any good news in quite a while.

If we don't get the surprise big, we'll still have a great team, and a very entertaining team that will score many a fast-break. But man do I want that surprising good news.

Sorry Dixie. I should ALWAYS put the sarcasm tag on posts that merit it. We have a talented squad that will compete and should win the WCC and go back to the dance. Another NBA big would help, but this is the NCAA, and we have one projected now, and 2 if Sam picks up. Mine was more a response to your response of the DOOMED attitude thats been prevalent lately...that voters were forced to move us to a #1 ranking and forced to give us a #1 seed, and we're just a little school and don't deserve it and if just 1 of the nigs would have come we would be set!
We are thin in the frontline, but have the players to work around that. We have 2 good experienced players on the frontline, a good cadre of 1'2 and 2's and, with Coleman, Dranginis and Barham a solid handle on the 3. We mat need to slide one of them into a limited minutes 4, or play a 4 non post line-up...like most NCAA teams. Who knows, maybe it will even turn out better than last year!

I hope you know your post may contain a typo that you may want to correct.

Myself, I'm looking forward to a smaller line up. The last three years, in our exit from the dance, our NBA front line dominated the boards. They outrebounded the opposition 101-76, with a 41-18 advantage on the offensive boards.

At the same time GU has shot around 42% from the field and I'm sure I don't have to mention they've allowed the opponents to shoot .463 from 3pt range with a high volume of attempts.

I'm all in on plan B, or even C.
