Five Zags Named On The 2013 WCC Baseball All-Academic Team

SAN BRUNO, Calif. Five Gonzaga University baseball players have earned a spot on the 2013 West Coast Conference Baseball All-Academic team announced the league Friday. Alex Bonczyk, Travis Forbes, Marco Gonzales, Mitchell Gunsolus and Steven Halcomb were recognized on the 25-man team for the Bulldogs.

Bonczyk, a senior from Las Vegas, Nev., has played in 48 games for the Zags with 38 starts. He is hitting .288 with a homerun and 12 RBI. A speedster, Bonczyk leads the team in stolen bases with 12 including six in WCC play. Bonczyk graduated this spring with a 3.36 GPA in sociology.

Taking over full-time catching duties, senior Forbes has started all but two games for the Bulldogs this year. The Granada Hills, Calif., native has a batting average of .235 with 14 RBI. Forbes also recorded a walk-off game winner against Brown University March 26. With a degree in accounting, Forbes graduated this spring with a 3.57 GPA.

Gonzales has been the definition of a two-way player for GU. At the plate he carries a team-best .321 batting average with a couple of homeruns and 26 RBI. On the mound, the lefty has a 7-2 record with a 2.57 ERA in a team-best 98 innings. The junior is majoring in sports management and has a 3.30 GPA. This is the second consecutive season Gonzales has been named academic team.

Sophomore Gunsolus has become a valuable asset for the Bulldogs. The Kenmore, Wash., native has started every game at third base and batted leadoff. With a .293 batting average and a team-best six triples, Gunsolus has maintained an on base percentage of .402. Gunsolus carries a 3.32 GPA and is undeclared on a major.

A four-year starter for the Zags, Halcomb has provided a middle of the lineup bat in his career. The senior from Poway, Calif., has hit .252 with two homeruns and 20 RBI. The Bulldogs shortstop has had six multiple RBI games with nine multiple hit games. Halcomb also graduated this spring with a 3.42 GPA in civil engineering.

At the conclusion of each athletic season, the WCC selects the all-academic team for each WCC-sponsored sport. To be considered, a student-athlete must maintain at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA, while also being a significant contributor to the team...
