SCOUTING PORTLAND: The University of Portland is coming off a three-game sweep of Santa Clara University last weekend to move into second place in the West Coast Conference standings. The Pilots opened WCC action in San Francisco winning just one of three games. Jeff Melby is having a solid season at the plate with a .330 average with 13 RBI. As a team, Portland is hitting .248. Kurt Yinger leads the team in wins (2) and ERA (2.55) in his 53 innings. Portland is 7-5 at Joe Etzel Field this season and Chris Sperry is in his 16th season at the helm of the club.

TAKING IT TO THE COUGS: Gonzaga baseball has taken it to local rival Washington State University in its two games this season. GU has defeated WSU 10-8 and 7-2 with both games being played in Pullman at Bailey-Brayton Field. The two teams have one more game remaining and it will be played at Patterson Complex April 16.

READY OR NOT: Gonzaga University baseball has had no problem scoring early against its opponents. The Bulldogs have outscored teams 23-9 in the first innings of games. That is the highest inning margin for the club. Gonzaga is 9-0 when it scores in the first inning and 12-2 when it scores first.

AMONGST THE WCC BEST: Many Gonzaga baseball players are some of the best in the West Coast Conference. Entering the week, Marco Gonzales is fifth in batting average (.347) and Cory LeBrun is eighth (.341). Mitchell Gunsolus is seventh in hits with 34, second in triples with 4 and second in total bases with 135. Pitcher Arturo Reyes is third in ERA (1.57) and Gonzales is second in strikeouts with 46. Gonzales and Tyler Olson are also tied for third with four wins.

OTHER TRENDS: Right-handed pitchers should be cautious when facing Gonzaga baseball. The club is 14-7 against righties. The Zags are also play their best under the lights with a 10-1 record in night games.

REYES MAKING THE BEST OF IT: Gonzaga baseball has found a dynamic weapon in pitching transfer Arturo Reyes. The right handed pitcher has made nine appearances in 2013 with a 1.57 ERA in 28.2 innings. Reyes made his first start in a Zag uniform in the series finale against Loyola Marymount University and made the most of it. Reyes pitched a complete game allowing just one run. He struck out three Lions to improve his record to 3-1...

GU can't afford to lose any more ground on the leaders. The fact that they have not settled on a game 3 starter does not show much confidence as to who they can count on after Gonzales and Olson.

It is time to quit fooling around if they have their sights on a WCC title this year.

Baseball Wins Both Games And Series Against Portland

PORTLAND, ORE. – After Friday’s scheduled game was suspended due to rain, Gonzaga University baseball returned and swept both Saturday games over the University of Portland at Joe Etzel Field. The Zags won the resumed game 5-4 and took the afternoon contest 4-1.

The victories boost Gonzaga’s record to 19-10-1 overall and 7-4 in the West Coast Conference. Portland falls to 12-19 overall and is an even 4-4 in the WCC.

The Bulldogs have won eight consecutive games against Portland.

Friday’s game was called in fourth inning with the score tied at 3 with starters Marco Gonzales (4-2) and Portland’s Travis Radke each pitching the three innings of play.

The Zags scored two runs in the first. One on the first of the Pilots seven errors in the game and the second on a pick off of Steven Halcomb at first base which allowed a run to score. Gonzales hit an RBI double in the third for the third GU run.

Halcomb also made his return to the Gonzaga lineup since March 17 after missing 11 games with an injury.

Portland tied the game in the bottom of the third when the rain started to come down. Caleb Whelan singled in two runs and Kramer Scott hit an RBI double to knot it up. The game was suspended after the inning.

Picking up the action Saturday, Arturo Reyes (4-1) took the mound for Gonzaga and Billy Sahlinger for Portland.

The Pilots took a 5-4 lead in the sixth but the Zag offense responded with the tying and winning run in the top of the seventh. Pilots catcher Beau Fraser made a throwing error trying to throw out a stealing LeBrun at second base which allowed Mitchell Gunsolus to score from third. Clayton Eslick would then connect for a pitch-hit single to center bringing home the go-ahead run.

Reyes picked up the win in a strong relief appearance for the Bulldogs. The Warden, Wash., native threw all six innings allowing just four hits, one unearned run while striking out nine. He lowered his team-best ERA to 1.30.

Game two was a pitching duel between Zag Tyler Olson (5-2) and Pilot Kurt Yinger. Through the first five innings each pitcher allowed just two hits before the Bulldogs pushed a run across in the sixth.

Alex Bonczyk opened the inning hit a base hit up the middle and advanced to second on a Gunsolus sacrifice bunt. Halcomb singled putting runners on first and second with one out. A double steal advanced both runners and LeBrun would hit a sacrifice fly to right field which brought home Bonczyk.

Yinger escaped the inning on a ground out to second and the Zags would not relinquish the lead.

GU added three more runs to distance themselves even more in the seventh. Cabe Reiten drove in two with a double to left field and advanced to third on a throwing error by the shortstop on the relay home. Reiten scored on a successful squeeze bunt from Bonczyk.

Olson continued to silence the Pilots bats en route to his third complete game of the season. The lefty allowed four hits, one run while striking out 11 Pilots.

By winning both games, Gonzaga wins its third WCC series of the season. The series concludes Sunday as GU goes for the sweep at 1:00 p.m.

Baseball Wins Series Finale 2-1 And Sweeps The Pilots

SPOKANE, Wash. – Pitcher Kenny Smith allowed just one run in seven innings to help Gonzaga University baseball sweep the University of Portland Pilots 2-1 Monday at Joe Etzel Field. The victory is the Bulldogs ninth consecutive over Portland.

With the sweep, the Bulldogs move into a tie for first place in the West Coast Conference with Pepperdine University. The Zags are 20-10-1 overall and 8-4 WCC. Portland drops to 12-20 overall and 4-5 WCC.

Gonzaga scored its two runs on just four hits but it was Smith’s (3-0) brilliance on the mound that highlighted the Zags day. Smith, making his second start of the year, scattered just seven hits while striking out four Pilots in his season-high seven innings of work.

The Zags manufactured its runs early in the game.

In the second inning, the Bulldogs got runners on second and third with one out thanks to an errant throw from the Pilot shortstop. Travis Forbes then hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield bringing in the first run of the game and giving GU a 1-0 edge.

Both sides scored in the third. Cory LeBrun reached on a fielder’s choice that brought home Mitchell Gunsolus who walked earlier in the inning. In Portland’s half of the inning, Jeff Melby grounded out to shortstop but on the play the lone Pilot run scored.

The 2-1 Bulldog lead would hold for the final score.

Pitcher Marco Gonzales made his first Gonzaga relief appearance and collected his first career save. Gonzales, who only pitched three innings in the series opener that was suspended due to rain, threw the final two frames and struck out two more Pilots.

Next up for the Bulldogs is a weekend WCC series in Spokane when Saint Mary’s College visits Patterson Baseball Complex and Washington Trust Field. Game one is Friday with a 6:02 p.m. first pitch.
