Bulldogs Baseball To Visit Washington State Tuesday

SPOKANE, Wash. – Gonzaga University baseball has another Tuesday affair with local rival Washington State University before hitting the road for more West Coast Conference games. Tuesday’s 6 p.m. game in Pullman, Wash., is the second between the two schools this season. Gonzaga won game one 10-8 on Mar. 19 at Bailey-Brayton Field behind a 3 RBI performance from Cory LeBrun and six strong innings pitched from Kenny Smith. Game three of the season series will be at Patterson Baseball Complex and Washington Trust Field when the Cougars visit the Zags on Apr. 16 for a 6 p.m. game.

SCOUTING WASHINGTON STATE: The Cougars are 5-2 since Gonzaga University defeated Washington State University 10-8 Mar. 19. WSU swept its four game series with Brown University outscoring the Bears 45-4. However, the Cougars dropped two of three from the visiting Cardinals from Stanford. Washington State won the series finale against Stanford to remain 3-3 in the Pac-12. Tuesday’s game against the Zags will be the last game of a nine-game home stand. The Cougars are 12-4 at Bailey-Brayton Field.

REYES MAKING THE BEST OF IT: Gonzaga baseball has found a dynamic weapon in pitching transfer Arturo Reyes. The right handed pitcher has made nine appearance in 2013 with a 1.57 ERA in 28.2 innings. Reyes made his first start in a Zag uniform in the series finale against Loyola Marymount University and made the most of it. Reyes pitched a complete game allowing just one run. He struck out three Lions to improve his record to 3-1.

MITCHELL THE MAN: Sophomore Mitchell Gunsolus has had a terrific start to the 2013 season for Gonzaga University baseball. The third baseman has started every game and been the leadoff hitter for GU. Gunsolus is hitting .312 and has eight extra base hits to his name. He has also proven to be a patient batter with a team-best 18 walks and a .415 on-base percentage. Gunsolus had a 23 game streak of reaching base safely.

DYNAMIC DUO: Junior Marco Gonzales and Seniors Tyler Olson have been dealing on the mound for Gonzaga University baseball. Gonzales is 4-2 with a 2.65 ERA in 51 innings pitched. Olson has done just as well with a 4-2 mark and a 3.55 ERA. The two left handed pitchers have given the Zags consistent performances and each has been named West Coast Conference Rawlings Pitcher of the Week...

After 4 complete innings, Gonzaga now leads WSU 3-0.

In the 4th inning, Gonzaga scored their 3 runs on 4 base hits, a walk and a Cougar error.

Gonzaga's Derek Callahan has only given up 4 hits so far.

In the 5th inning, Gonzaga scored their run on a wild pitch. The Zags managed 2 base hits, a walk and left 2 runners on base.

After 6 complete innings, Gonzaga still leads WSU 4-0.

Gonzaga's Zach Abbruzza came in relief of Callahan in the bottom of the 6th inning.

After 7 complete innings, the Zags lead the Cougars 6-2.

Gonzaga scored their 2 runs on 3 base hits (a double and 2 singles) and the left 1 runner on base.

Zach Abbruzza still pitching in relief for the Zags.

Gonzaga added another run so after 8 complete innings, the Zags lead the Cougars 7-2.

In their half of the 8th inning, the Zags had the bases loaded on a sigle and two walks with 2 outs. On a single to centerfield, Gonzaga scored 1 run and the runner from second base was thrown out at the plate trying to score.

Marco Gonzales leads the Zags with 3 base hits this evening...

Gonzaga defeats WSU 7-2...

After 2 outs in the bottom of the 9th, the Cougars load the bases on a hit batsman, and 2 singles. Tyler Olson comes in to pitch for the Zags and gets the final out on fly out to right field.

Derek Callahan is the winning pitcher for Gonzaga...

Bulldogs Baseball Tops Washington State 7-2 In Pullman

PULLMAN, Wash. – Marco Gonzales and Caleb Wood each had 2 RBI for Gonzaga University baseball as the Bulldogs topped Washington State University 7-2 at Bailey-Brayton Field Tuesday night. The Zags are 2-0 against the Cougars with both victories coming in Pullman. Gonzaga and WSU wrap up its three-game series Apr. 16 in Spokane.

The win moves GU to 17-10-1 overall. Washington State falls top 16-11.

The Zags got a strong start from Derek Callahan (2-1) who went five innings allowing four hits and no runs. Callahan struck out three and lowered his ERA to 2.56.

The Bulldogs were on the board first by getting three runs in the fourth inning. Mitchell Gunsolus and Wood both reached base safely to start the inning which prompted the Cougars to pull starter Sam Triece for J.D. Leckenby.

Gonzales would single in the first GU run followed by a run scoring on an error by the WSU first baseman. Payden Cawley Lamb would bring another run in with a base knock to the left side to give the Zags a 3-0 lead.

Alex Bonczyk would score in the fourth for Gonzaga on a Leckenby wild pitch moving the GU advantage to 4-0.

The Bulldogs would build its lead to 6-0 with two additional runs in the top of the seventh. Wood singled in Bonczyk and would score on Gonzales base hit down the right field line.

The Cougars scored its only two runs in their half of the seventh. Nick Tanielu and Adam Nelubowich each with an RBI double to get WSU on the board.

Gonzaga would hold the lead for the win and even added another run in the eighth on a Wood single.

The Zags outhit the Cougars 11-10. Wood finished 2-for-4 and Gonzales reached base five times by going 3-for-3 with two walks.

The Bulldogs will now prepare for a three-game series against the University Portland starting Friday. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. in Portland, Ore.
