This and academic AA, what a season.

I wonder if KO's redshirt transformation will be attempted by others after playing a season or two in the hopes of similar success.

Nice. Well deserved... knew it was coming. After watching as much basketball this season as I have in some years it was clear KO was the best all-around 5. I think some players were higher-profile, but KO was a purer, more efficient player than all of them.

Gonna stay and make it two years in a row?

So if he goes in the top 20, wow that is a lot of money to say no to. That would be hard to turn down for anyone.

I also don't really feel that his rebounding is that big of a negative or mediocre. I thought that this was something he was really improving at the end of the year. Not sure what the stats say though.

I think he's got some athleticism issues as it concerns rebounding, but nothing a little court savvy wouldn't necessarily overcome.

So went back to 2002 & here's what I came up with:

5:Kansas
5:Duke (Reddick x2)
3:GU
3:Texas
3:UNC (Hansbrough x3)
3:Ohio St. (Sullinger x2)

So as far as individuals go, only Kansas & Duke have exceeded GU's 3 & only Texas has equalled.

Good recruiting point?

He joins Dickau and Morrison as guys who were not recruited nationally but developed into First Team All Americans over their years on campus. That says a lot about player development at Gonzaga. Other schools take McDonald's All Americans and turn them into all conference players. Gonzaga takes three-star recruits and turns them into first Team AP All Americans.

Inclusion on the AP List makes Kelly a Consensus All-American! From Wiki (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2013_NCAA_Men%27s_Basketball_All-Americans#2013_Consensus_All-America_team):
The Consensus 2013 College Basketball All-American team is determined by aggregating the results of the four major All-American teams as determined by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). Since United Press International was replaced by TSN in 1997, the four major selectors have been the aforementioned ones. AP has been a selector since 1948, NABC since 1957 and USBWA since 1960.[2] To earn "consensus" status, a player must win honors based on a point system computed from the four different all-America teams. The point system consists of three points for first team, two points for second team and one point for third team. No honorable mention or fourth team or lower are used in the computation. The top five totals plus ties are first team and the next five plus ties are second team.[3]
2013 Consensus All-America team

PG – Point guard
SG – Shooting guard
PF – Power forward
SF – Small forward
C – Center

Consensus First Team Player Position Class Team
Trey Burke PG Sophomore Michigan
Doug McDermott SF Junior Creighton
Victor Oladipo SG Junior Indiana
Kelly Olynyk PF-C Junior Gonzaga
Otto Porter F Sophomore Georgetown

Kelly Olynyk, Gonzaga: The NBA folks tell me he'll be taken somewhere between 15 and 25, which is a far cry from where he was a year ago when he was an anonymous redshirt in Spokane. Olynyk's stock is high after a stellar, productive season, and I'm not sure it can get much higher -- especially with a terrific group of freshmen coming into the college ranks next season. VERDICT: Go pro

We've had some players regress badly, too. Look @ Pargo the first 2 months of his soph season compared to after...

We've had some good developments, but there has been plenty of wasted talent to go with it.

I believe all those schools have a Final Four appearance in the last 10 years besides us.

I mean it's something worth mentioning, but guys want to go to the NBA and none of our all americans have had any kind of sustained success in the Association. It'd be a great selling point for a player who only cared about being selected an all american and nothing else.

I believe Kelly has until April 10 to declare for the draft and, having declared, must elect by April 16 if he intends to return to school. It will be an interesting couple of weeks for Zag fans.

Here is Jeff Goodman's list (http://www.cbssports.com/collegebasketball/blog/eye-on-college-basketball/21965099/nba-draft-early-entries) of underclassmen who've declared to date. Still a lot of probable lottery picks waiting to declare ...

Players have until April 10 to apply for information from the NBA Undergraduate Advisory Committee. Five days later, players testing the waters will get feedback on the range they are expected to be drafted.

Wednesday, April 16 is the NCAA's official Early Entry Withdrawal Deadline -- when players have to pull out in order to maintain their college basketball eligibility.

From Allbuffs.com (http://www.allbuffs.com/showthread.php/87632-NBA-Draft-Important-Dates) - NBA Draft - Important Dates:

April 10: NBA Undergraduate Advisory Committee Application Deadline

April 15: NBA Undergraduate Advisory Committee Response Deadline

April 16: NCAA Early Entry "Withdrawal" Deadline

April 28: NBA Draft Early Entry Eligibility Deadline (11:59 pm ET)

May 2: NBA Draft Early Entry Candidates Released - Underclassmen Contact Permitted

The NBA will let him declare anytime up until April 28th, it's just that he doesn't have the ability to withdraw and retain NCAA eligibility if he declares between the 16th & 28th.

I'd expect him to make an announcement sometime before the 28th, but it is a possibility his status could be up in the air all the way up until the midnight deadline passes on April 28th.

Wait until the personal workouts.

The knock is that he isn't strong or can rebound. This knock will soon go away. Not elite in those categories, but not a weakness either. Some team will publicly fall in love with Olynyk's scoring potential and that will get the ball rolling for other teams pay more attention.

Just before the draft, when you hear about players with zooming stock, Kelley will be one of the guys they are talking about.

The best pro prospect in the Few era and will ultimately be the best pro since Stockton.

I don't hear much about Dellavedova, but if I were a NBA GM, I would take a flier on the guy. Delley is a leader and a very smart player.

KO is the best pro prospect from GU in a long time and I also agree that his stock will rise as the draft window closes this year.

So apparently Kelly made history here in Canada. He is the first Canadian to be named 1st team All American in NCAA DIV I basketball. I would link the article but I'm not sure how to do it on my phone, sorry. It's on the basketballbuzz website. Good job Kelly.

"Kelly Olynyk Becomes First Canadian To Be Named To AP All-American First Team

Shared by angolanmade 10 hrs ago in NBA | basketballbuzz.ca
Gonzaga's Kelly Olynyk has inked his named in Canadian Basketball history by becoming the first Canadian-Born player to be selected to the 1st-Team All-America by the Associated Press.

Both Canadian Basketball legends Steve Nash (Santa 1995-96/Clara Broncos) and Leo Rautins (1982-83/ Syracuse Orange) received honorable mentioned during the senior NCAA seasons.

Olynyk averaged 17.6 points and 7.3 rebounds and shot 64.7 percent from the field for the Zags (32-2), who reached No. 1 in the AP poll for the first time in program history.

"Obviously you believe in yourself, but I didn't expect it to explode on the scene with this much attention," Olynyk said. "My teammates and coaches believed in me and put me in a position to succeed."

Olynyk, the West Coast Conference player of the year, also made the 10-player John R. Wooden All-America team.

This marks the first time"

This looks like part of an article previously posted, but not sure.

Congratulations to Kelly, his great basketball family, coaches and teammates.

His confidence in his abilities and his love of GU basketball paid off.

I have always been a believer in Kelly and his potential, have followed him since he was a high school sophomore. While the first two years at GU where at times frustrating for Kelly and his fans, most on this board could see what the staff saw, a talented player learning to come to grips with a huge growth spurt. At the beginning of the year I thought that WCC POY was possible, but I must admit that his rise to 1st team AA has taken even me by surprise.

History has been made.....

BTW, for those of you unaware, even if Kelly leaves, the Olynyk family / Kamloops influence will not completely leave GU.

Kelly's dad, Ken, has been the head coach for Kelly's SKSS senior girls squad that won the BC Championships again this year. On that team is GU recruit 6'4" post player Emma Woolfram, who has taken a simular path to both Kelly and Kevin, having played for provincial and national age group teams. Emma is THree time MVP of the championships and is the most dominant player to play BC girls basketball for at least a decade. IMHO like Kelly she will make her mark at GU.....

[QUOTE=rennis;903764]^ agree with everything Mick said.

Delly will make waves in the pros, just probably not the NBA. He would be a good player in the highest level euro ball and an all star if he went to the Aussie NBL (doubt he will). I'd still love to see him make an NBA roster. Either way, he will make a good living putting a round ball through a metal hoop. Probably won't be anywhere near KO's tax bracket though :)
