Thank you for your tireless work during the season and offseason as well. One thing is for certain, Drake will never have a more hardworking coach who knows his stuff.

Best!

Congrats to Ray...was bound to happen, especially after the ponzi scheme. Looking forward to following Drake in the future.

This is most surely our loss. Tremendous asset. At the same time, he deserves a HC shot and we can always use a fresh look at our program, which this kind of move makes possible.

It must get a little bittersweet among these close friends, their wives and children. They really do constitute a big family.

And they've enjoyed each others successes and lives for most if not all of their adult lives, beginning mostly at GU.

Congratulations to Ray, but a major bummer for us to lose him. Best wishes for success at Drake!

Who does Few and staff go after to replace Ray? A defensive specialist who changes our culture on the 3 point defense?

Drake will have better luck in the MVC now that Creighton is gone. While they have not managed to dominate the MVC as much as Gonzaga has the WCC, they do steal a lot of the thunder. Drake and Creighton had a good rivalry going, and I am willing to bet they continue to play each other in the pre season. OTH, I am not sure Creighton will play Wichita State, as that rivalry is considerably less friendly. That is a tough conference, and winning on the road is nearly impossible. Ray might need Prozac in order to cope with the officiating in that conference. Buona Fortuna Giacco.

Wasn't Ray the defensive guy who got this relatively unathletic roster to a top 25 defensive ranking?

GU was 130th out of 340some teams on def 3%. Better than average. Better than 60some percent of the teams in D1.

That's with Pangos and Stockton on the floor a lot, guys who just aren't built to bother shooters. Edi, the guy most built to challenge/bother 3 pt shooters, played his way out of the rotation.

A mediocre shooting team got hot, like Illinois did, like Baylor did. Like even the Cougs did at the end. It happens to everybody a few times a year.

It happened at a bad time. Random chance works that way. GU gave up 33% for the year. Wich shot 33% for the year. On average. Averages are made up of highs and lows. Why is that so hard for some people to understand?

3 pt defense was adequate this year, given the makeup of the roster. And met reasonable expectations, the last game notwithstanding.

The real issue in the "culture" is playing tight at tourney time, something Few has to address in terms of looking at his own personality and how it influences the players in big games. The last game was lost just as much because KO, EH, and KP shot a collective 20% below their average (add 10 makes to their 47 attempts and what's the result?), and there's a whole row of dominoes behind that occurrence that would require another post.

I agree with the last game part. Teams get hot and beat someone based on 3 pt shooting. It's part of the game, it is what creates Cinderellas and makes the tourney great.

HOWEVER, GU had GBJ and Mike Hart, two defenders who are supposed to be outstanding (and I thought were most of the time). There are also some fairly good athletes that didn't play (GLE for example). Our team is consistently, at best, an adequate 3 point defense (despite very good #s in conference).

This is partially culture/coaching/whatever you want to call it.

This season, our expectations may have been inflated because of the way we shut down WCC competition. Our conference-only 29.6% 3 point field goal defense would have been good enough for 12th nationally. But overall, we let opponents hit 32.9% of their shots for a 115th ranking nationally. Two of the sixteen remaining teams had a worse defensive three point field goal percentage, Oregon (149th ranked) and Arizona (249th).

Our best defender next season could be a guy who, while in Louisville, had a reputation for not playing good enough defense to earn minutes (but he can shoot!).

I'm a huge Mark Few fan. I don't think anyone would have done any better than he has done, and a whole lot of people would have messed it all up. But, part of the reason we don't play good 3 pt defense is because we recruit guys with other attributes in mind, we play guys who fit our system, and our system is built on not gambling, not extending, and giving up nothing easy (David Stockton being the gambling exception). It has worked. But it is partially due to coaching.

And I'll miss Ray G because I think he was one of the coaches most committed to improving our defense. I hope he does well.

Gonzaga is so "over-rated" that everyone wants what we have. Gonzaga is what they are, not over or under-rated. EVERY other mid major and some major schools want what we have and the people who know facts, know Gonzaga is a top 25 program.

If both Ray G and Daniels end up leaving, that is worse than Kelly Olynyk leaving. However if we can improve and get some guys who have better experience and respect in this industry, then all things can have a silver lining.

I question how good the Drake job is right now, but it appears as if these are the only jobs that are being offered to RayG. He wants to be a head coach again, so this is a foot in the door. Drake belongs to one of the best non-BCS leagues out there, so there are some positives moving forward. Best of luck to him. As I like to say, he's a good basketball man.

Best post I've read since last Sat. Superb OZN! Summarized the status of the program to a tee!

I hope Gonzaga brings in someone with experience and connections (for recruiting purposes).

If Ray G wanted to give Hart a job, that'd be cool.

I appreciate what Ray G brought to GU and I wish him the best of luck.

So the current head coaches with GU coaching ties continues to expand with coaches at Long Beach St, Boise St, USD and now Drake. Are there any more?
