No. 21 Baseball Splits Doubleheader With 2-1 Victory Over LMU

LOS ANGELES, Calif. – Freshman Caleb Wood hit a two RBI triple in the top of the seventh inning with two outs to boost No. 21 Gonzaga University baseball 2-1 over Loyola Marymount University to split its Saturday doubleheader at Page Stadium. The Lions won game one 9-2, but the Zags rallied in game two to pick up its lone win of the weekend.

By splitting the day, the Bulldogs move to 16-10-1 overall and are 5-4 in West Coast Conference play.

Game two of the doubleheader was a pitching duel between Gonzaga starter Arturo Reyes (3-1) and Loyola Marymount’s Trevor Megill.

The Lions scored its only run in the game in the bottom of the first inning on a Colton Plaia RBI single to the left side. That would be all LMU would get from Reyes who was in control the rest of the game.

Wood’s clutch hit came in a pressure situation in the seventh. Gonzaga chased off Megill and were able to get runners on the corners. Lion reliever Sean Buckle delivered a ball to Wood that he drove to left field over the fielders head allowing the tying and go-ahead to score.

Reyes finished what he started, throwing his first complete game in a Zags uniform. Reyes scattered nine hits over the game and struck out three batters.

The morning game of the series was not as dramatic as game two.

LMU got to GU starter Tyler Olson (4-2) early and never looked back. Through three innings, the Lions held a 9-2 lead which ended up the final score.

It was a seven run second inning for Loyola Marymount that put the Zags away. Cullen Mahoney and David Edwards each had a two RBI base hit in the inning.

Offensively that Bulldogs would respond with two runs in the third but it was not enough. Alex Bonczyk opened the inning with a double down the left field line followed by a Mitchell Gunsolus RBI triple down the right field line. Gunsolus was brought home on a Cory LeBrun ground out.

Taylor Jones relieved Olson in the fourth and threw a strong 5 innings. Jones gave up just three hits and struck out three batters.

Gonzaga returns to the diamond Tuesday when it travels to Washington State University for its second game against the Cougars at 6 p.m. Next weekend, the Bulldogs will travel to the University of Portland for a three game set beginning Friday at 3 p.m.

Not a good weekend for the Zags. They came in tied for 2nd and now drop into the middle of the pack. They can kiss their #21 ranking good bye. They should have done better against a middling LMU squad. Instead GU's #1 and #2 starters (Gonzales and Olson) get beat and they are lucky to pull out a narrow win in game #3.

They are probably going to need a sweep at 8th place Portland next week to stay in the hunt.
