No. 21 Baseball Splits Doubleheader; Forbes With The Walk-Off

SPOKANE, Wash. – Travis Forbes hit a pitch-hit walk-off single in the bottom of the 9th inning to help No. 21 Gonzaga University baseball split its Tuesday doubleheader against Brown University at Patterson Baseball Complex and Washington Trust Field. The Zags won the nightcap 6-5 after dropping the afternoon game 6-3.

By splitting the day, Gonzaga moves to 15-8-1 overall and is still 4-2 in the West Coast Conference. Brown moved to 2-11.

The Bulldogs appeared to have the nightcap under control taking a 5-0 lead into the ninth. However, Brown would rally and with the bases loaded, two outs and three runs already scored. Mat DeRenzi singled up the middle bringing home the tying two runs. Smith battled out of the inning and escaped with a fly out to left field but the Bears had done their damage.

Gonzaga proved resilient however. After Cabe Reiten walked to open the inning, Alex Bonczyk laid a sacrifice bunt to advance Reiten to second. Mitchell Gunsolus was then walked to set the stage for the Forbes game winner.

Smith (2-0) picked up the victory. The Bulldogs did get an impressive performance from starter Zach Abbruzza who went 5.2 innings giving up just two hits and no runs. Abbruzza struck out six and gave up two walks.

Offensively the Bulldogs did most its damage early in the game. Marco Gonzales hit a two RBI double in the first to give GU a quick lead. Caleb Wood scored on a wild pitch in the fourth and hit a two RBI single in the eighth.

In game one of the doubleheader, the Zags grabbed an early 1-0 lead on back-to-back doubles from Wood and Mitchell Gunsolus but Brown scored three runs in both the sixth and seventh inning to distance themselves from GU.

Clayton Eslick hit a solo home run in the sixth and Gonzales had a RBI single in the ninth but it was not enough to catch the Bears.

Freshman Andrew Sopko (0-1) got the loss after throwing 6.1 innings. Ben Brown and Derek Peterson also saw in action in relief.

The Bulldogs week continues Thursday with a 3 p.m. contest in Los Angeles, Calif., against Loyola Marymount University. The three-game WCC series concludes Saturday with a morning-afternoon doubleheader.

Brown is terrible. They lost to Wazzu last week 20-1.

Maybe Coach Machtolf was saving his first string pitchers for the series against LMU starting Thursday; however, our starting pitchers seem to drop off after Gonzales and Olson. We seem to be in a pattern of dropping game 3 of each 3 game series.
