View Full Version : ES Arena - crowd? refs? where are they from?

I was working and didn't see game on TV (just left gametracker running on my PC). But, from what I'm reading on this Board, it sounds like the crowd started getting behind Southern. What's up with that? I would have thought with the GU fans that went to SLC plus the locals partial to Stockton or whatever, the Zags would have had a sizeable majority in our favor. Where was the support for Southern coming from?

Also, any knowledge what conference the refs came from today? and for Saturday? I hope we aren't getting refs from Big 10, Big 12, or ACC.

Half the crowd was non zag so they started getting behind a Cinderella

One ref from big ten unknown other two

If the crowd consisted mostly of Zag fans, they should be embarrassed. From what I saw on TV they didn't bother making much noise. Not sure where the refs were from, but they stunk also. Basically, the Zags won this game with absolutely no help from the crowd or the refs. Good for them I say.

I live in big ten country and everyone has hated Ted Valentine's officiating since I can remember.

Here is the 2012-2013 game breakdown by conference for today's refs (click on the names for more info). As for Saturday, unlike the NBA, I don't believe referee info for NCAA games is released beforehand.

Zag fans butts were puckered up so tight they couldn't make a sound.

The refs were Ted Valentine, James Barker, Mark Schnur and this stat database on refs provides their history.

Caduceus. Help this simple country boy with the acronyms on your stat sheet?

Ignore the acronyms (games, fouls per game, disqualifications, technical fouls). Look at the CONFERENCES that they officiate.

It would be nice if at least one of the officiating crew came from Mountain or Pacific time zones.

Barkers' done 5 SWAC games this year? That's Southerns conference.

Not sure why they couldn't avoid something like that this early in the Tourney.

Two of the refs have officiated SWAC games this season. Honestly can't say I'm surprised given how they called the game. Don't even have a clue how the NCAA can allow that. Shameful.

Edit: Looking into it even further, both Valentine and Barker reffed 3 Southern games apiece this season. Wow...

I saw that. Was just curious what the other tracking stats were...thanks

I looked at Southern's stats for their last 10 games...playing against lesser competition they averaged 17.9 fouls per game and only ONCE had as few as 14 fouls in a game ...today they had 12 fouls ......something was NOT right....and it seemed that one of the black officials had it in for the Zags...

Still decent crowd at Energy Solutions tonite. Half time in NM Harvard game. Harvard looks good up at half by 4

Zags' fans were loud today at the arena. But a lot of Wichita and New Mexico fans were here as well and they got on the side of Southern smelling blood in water. But you can be assured the large crowd of Zags' fans did their job today

I like our match-up against Shockers. And we will beat Lobos if that game comes up on the dial

Go Zags!

My family and I were cheering very loud from the upper ring of seats. Lady in front of us kept covering her ears. GO ZAGS!

Got home last night and opened my new issue of SI (the regional one with KO on the cover). Lo and behold there was 3-page article on Ted Valentine, who I never heard of before comments like the above in this post. Apparently, Valentine is notorious, esp. in Big 10 country, for his constant showboating and trying to control events on the court. He's known as "TV Teddy" because he seeks to put the spotlight on himself, rather than the game.

Many years ago, he T'd up Bobby Knight twice in a game. The second T was clearly erroneous (one of his fellow refs even tried to get him reverse the call but TV Teddy refused, Knight was ejected, and IU lost a big game). Resulted in the league publicly stating later that call was erroneous and TV Teddy was "suspended" from Big 10 officiating for a year.

I 1st heard the moniker "TV Teddy" from a Memphis person in The Arena a few years back. Just think Dave Libbey East.

We've had him before in the NCAA.

I actually didn't notice if one or all 3 were particularly bad yesterday & since I'm pretty sure I'll never be reviewing that tape again, I guess I'll leave it up in the air.

One last note about the reffing in the Southern game. Zags had an 11 point lead with 9:34 to go in the game. From that point on the Zags are called for 5 fouls...AND Southern NONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (I don't count the intentional one with 14 seconds left) Southern shoots 8 FT's and the Zags NONE (again not counting the intentional at the end) Something was wrong with that picture!!!!

It is common knowledge that the refs tend to not call a lot of fouls during the "second round" games on Thursday and Friday. The refs are instructed by the NCAA to keep the games moving because of TV and the fact that there are four games to be played at each of the venues. I think there have been studies done which have proven that less fouls tend to be called on these tournament days than on any other days of the tournament.

I would expect more conventional officiating on Saturday.

This doesn't explain the phantom traveling calls or the calls against GBJ when he either didn't touch the shooter or the shooter pulled the Reggie Miller trick.

This x1,000,000

Every year I remind myself of this before the games start, but every year I'm surprised by how much more is uncalled than normal.

(they have to do something to counteract the extra long tv timeouts and halftimes that TV forces on the games.)

Obviously it doesn't affect every game, but it is a factor.

To some extent the Zags should be used to this and ready for it - due to game vs the lesser WCC teams each year that employ a "you can't call every foul" strategy - but as we all saw yesterday, the Zags didn't handle it well. Combine that with other events yesterday & ... I'm just glad GU advanced.

Hopefully the Zags (especially Harris) expect constant fouls and play through it on Saturday.

When do we know who is reffing our game tomorrow? I really don't want the same crew. I'll come out and say it, we're in trouble if it's the same crew.

When they come out of the locker room. The coaches only find out an hour before the game who the refs will be.
