And so it has come to this. NCAA Tournament day. We begin anew that which we have attempted many times before.
But this time, everything is different. The landscape has changed completely. Never before have we been a #1 seed. Never before have we been ranked the #1 team in the nation. Are expectations high? Yes. Is there heavy weight in this burden?
No.
The reason? We have before us the opportunity to complete all that was begun on our behalf. Standing on the shoulders of those who have come before us - Calvary, Santangelo, Fram, Hendrix, Stepp, Turiaf, Fitzgerald, Morrison, Batista, Pargo, and Dickau, and hundreds of other Zags, who have sacrifice and strived to be the best, all attempting to reach the pantheon and achieve the heights of success.
These Zags of the past have accomplished far more than any of us could have hoped for. And we owe each and every one of them an enormous debt of gratitude. We simply owe them our very best effort.
And so today, we begin anew and reach even higher. We travel uphill, along a difficult and daunting road. The deck stacked against us once again. We will receive no advantages. Pundits deny us. BCS schools do not want us included. The Media prefer their larger schools with bigger fan bases and audiences.
But in the end, we will not be denied.
These Zags, who carry the torch further, must be ferocious. Fierce.
Unrelenting.
Expectations are both too high, and difficult to achieve. Odds are against even the blue bloods schools getting to the Final Four, much less winning it all. And yet, we seek to place our names alongside theirs, among the elite.
We are Gonzaga.
We are TOUGH. UNCOMPROMISING. IMPOSING. We want this more than all of the others. And we will not stop until the last whistle blows.
And when it does, we will stand alone and prevail, victorious.
