A very nice article from John Blanchette at the Spokesman (http://www.spokesman.com/stories/2013/mar/20/blanchette-stockton-back-old-playground/) about David's time as a youngster in Salt Lake City and messing around in the arena where the games are being played this weekend.

Early in the 1998 NBA season, John Stockton was rehabilitating a knee injury, so 8-year-old David and older brother Michael brought their skates to what was then known as the Delta Center to cruise the endless concourses and tunnels. And then they saw Everest – the tight, switchback ramps leading to the building’s upper deck, and grasped the possibilities of a daring descent.

“We were just flying,” David recalled, “and then I realized I really didn’t know how to stop. I slammed into a Coke machine and cracked my collarbone.”

The pain was pretty fierce. The dread might have been worse.

John Stockton’s first concern was going to be his son’s well-being, of course, but this was a definite violation of the stay-out-of-everyone’s-hair clause, as it interrupted a work day.

“He was so mad he had to leave,” Stockton said.

“And I’m extremely jealous he gets to play out there,” said Michael Stockton, “in the best way possible.”

Michael is otherwise engaged, playing professional basketball in Germany, and so will not join the family in a suite to watch GU’s second-round game against Southern Thursday afternoon. But he’s completely clued in to how much the moment means to his brother.

“We talked about the possibility a couple of weeks ago and he was definitely excited,” Michael said. “We grew up in those hallways and seats, and got to watch so many great games there. And after games, we were allowed to go in the locker room and grab a ball and go shoot, and if that’s all we were allowed to do that would be a childhood dream right there. But there was so much more.”

It was an entrée into crazyworld, where the visiting superstars who spent 48 minutes chasing and body-checking Dad turned into their best buds afterward.

I. Love. This. Team.

And with Blanchette as the poet laureate of the team and city we are even further blessed.
