ON DECK: After taking three of four games from the University of Hawai'i, Gonzaga University baseball returns to Spokane for its 2013 Home Opener and the start of West Coast Conference play. Starting Friday, the University of San Francisco will visit Patterson Baseball Complex and Washington Trust Field for a three-game series. The Bulldogs enter the weekend 9-5-1 overall and the Dons are 7-9. In 2012, the Zags were swept down in San Francisco putting the team in a tailspin that resulted in Gonzaga dropping eight of nine games. Friday's game is set for 6:02 p.m. with preseason All-American Marco Gonzales set to take the mound against Abe Bobb...

SCOUTING SAN FRANCISCO: The University of San Francisco Dons enter the weekend after a huge win at #3 Oregon State University Tuesday. USF gave the Beavers its first loss of the season on its home field 5-1. The Dons are 7-9 overall. Offensively USF is powered by Zachary Turner who is hitting .429 with a homer and 15 RBI. The Dons have four starters hitting .300 or better; Turner, Derek Atkinson .341, Harrison Bruce .308, and Bob Cruikshank .300. On the mound, Alex Balog leads the starters with a 1-1 record and a 1.93 ERA. The team is coached by Nino Giarrtano in his 15th year...

NEW ZAGS IN THE LINEUP: Gonzaga University baseball has a number of new faces on the field than a year ago. With the departure of five starters, catcher Travis Forbes, second baseman Cabe Reiten, third baseman Mitchell Gunsolus and outfielders Alex Bonczyk and Cory LeBrun have all stepped into new roles. On the mound, Andrew Sopko and Zach Abbruzza have gotten a starting nod as the Zags continue to solidify its rotation...

Through 12 complete innings this evening, the Zags and the Dons are tied at 2-2.

Marco Gonzales started for Gonzaga and pitched 8 complete innings and gave up only 4 hits.

Gonzaga wins in the bottom of the 14th inning 3-2.

Entering the bottom of the 14th, the Zags had left 17 runners on base...

In the bottom of the 14th, the Zags lead off pinch hitter Minteer drew a walk. A sacrifice bunt by Jones advanced the runner to second with 1 out. The Dons intentionally walked the next Zag batter Moon so the Zags had runners on 1st and 2nd with 1 out. Against a new Don relief pitcher (the 6th pitcher of the night for USF), the Zags next batter Bonczyk singled to center but the lead runner Minteer was thrown out at home trying to score. The Zags thus had runners at 1st and 2nd with 2 outs. Finally, the Gonzaga batter Reiten singled to left center scoring Moon with the winning run...

Arturo Reyes was the winning pitcher for the Zags after pitching 6 innings of 3 hit relief of Gonzaga's Marco Gonzales.

Walk-Off Single From Reiten Boost Zags Over Dons In 14th

SPOKANE, Wash. - Freshman Cabe Reiten hit a walk-off single in the bottom of the 14th inning to propel Gonzaga University baseball 3-2 over the University of San Francisco in the Bulldogs 2013 Home Opener Friday at Patterson Baseball Complex and Washington Trust Field. Reiten had three hits and two of the Zags RBI's to support the excellent pitching efforts of starter Marco Gonzales and reliever Arturo Reyes.

Gonzaga wins its 10th game of the season and is 10-5-1 overall. The Dons fall to 7-10 overall.

Jumping right to the bottom of the 14th inning, Reiten stepped to the dish with two outs and runners on first and second. Don reliever Andrew Pulido delivered a ball that the Olympia, Wash., native drilled to left center to bring home Billy Moon, who was on second.

The victory was the first walk-off of the season for GU.

Senior Alex Bonczyk was nearly the hero for the Zags before Reiten hit. With runners on first and second with one out, Boncyk singled to center appearing to win the game but Nicholas Minteer was thrown out at the plate.

Both teams' starters pitched admirably. Gonzales (3-1) for the Zags went eight innings allowing just two runs while striking out six. For San Francisco, Abe Bobb went 7.1 also allowing two runs.

Picking up the win for Gonzaga was Reyes (2-0) who hurled six scoreless innings of three hit ball.

Offensively, both teams had opportunities to break away in the game. Combined, both Gonzaga (17) and USF (9) left 26 runners on base. The Zags did out hit the Dons 12 to 7.

Senior Steven Halcomb had three base hits and Moon had two. Mitchell Gunsolus reached base three times (one hit and two walks) to improve his team-best 13 game reaching base safely streak.

The Bulldogs and Dons continue its series tomorrow with a 3 p.m. first pitch. Starting for the Zags is senior Tyler Olson and San Francisco will counter with Alex Balog.

In a final, Gonzaga defeats San Francisco 9-5 this afternoon.

In other scores: In men's lacrosse, undefeated and #1 ranked Maryland Terrapins defeated Villanova 10-7 in a game that was way too close...and earlier today in women's lacrosse, undefeated and #1 ranked Maryland Terrapins defeated Boston College 13-5.

Eslick And Halcomb Homer As GU Downs San Francisco 9-5

SPOKANE, Wash. - Both Clayton Eslick and Steven Halcomb hit a two-run homerun as Gonzaga University baseball downed University of San Francisco Saturday 9-5 at Patterson Baseball Complex and Washington Trust Field. The Bulldogs made timely hits with runners on base and never trailed in the game.

Gonzaga improves to 11-5-1 overall and is 2-0 in West Coast Conference play. San Francisco drops to 7-11, 0-2 WCC.

It was the Bulldogs who struck first in the bottom of the first. Halcomb singled to left field to set the stage for the Bulldogs first homerun of the season. Eslick drove a ball over the left field fence off Dons starting pitcher Alex Balog giving GU the early 2-0 lead.

San Francisco scored in fourth but Gonzaga distanced themselves in the fifth and sixth innings.

Up 2-1 with bases load in the bottom of fifth, Eslick hit a sacrifice fly to center to bring home another run and his third RBI of the game. Brock Slavin would single in two more runs with two outs put give GU a 5-1 edge.

In the sixth, Mitchell Gunsolus singled in Payden Cawley Lamb before the Halcomb homerun. The Bulldogs tacked on three runs in the inning to go up 9-2.

Zag starter Tyler Olson (3-1) picked up the victory by throwing 6.1 innings and striking out five Dons. Balog for USF picked up the loss.

Kenny Smith relieved Olson and pitched 2.2 innings of three hit ball.

Overall offensively the Zags scored its nine runs on 10 hits leaving only three runners on base.

Gonzaga will go for the series sweep over the Dons Sunday at noon. On the mound for the Bulldogs will be Derek Callahan (1-0, 2.91 ERA) and his opponent will be Christian Cecilio.

USF's Bradley Zimmer was a one-man wrecking crew today.

Zimmer was 3 for 4 plus a walk...and also reached base on a fielder's choice.

Zimmer scored 4 runs, hit 2 home runs and drove in 3 runs.

Gonzaga Bulldogs Baseball Downed 9-3 To San Francisco

SPOKANE, Wash. - Gonzaga University baseball dropped its series finale 9-3 to University of San Francisco Sunday at Patterson Baseball Complex and Washing Trust Field, but won the weekend series two games to one. It was a close game through six innings but the Dons distanced themselves with seven runs in the last three frames.

The Zags fall to 11-6-1 overall and are 2-1 in the West Coast Conference. San Francisco improves to 8-11 and 1-2 in WCC.

San Francisco was the first team on the board. With two outs in the top of the second and a runner at second base, Bob Cruikshank singled down the middle putting the Dons up 1-0. USF would continue to threaten in the inning by getting two more runners on but starter Derek Callahan (1-1) escaped by getting a weak fly out to right field.

A USF homerun in the fourth inning gave the Dons a 2-0 lead but Gonzaga would cut it to one with a run in the fifth. With Runners on the corners with two outs and Cabe Reiten at the dish, San Francisco starter Christian Cecilio threw over to first base to catch Mitchell Gunsolus in a pickle.

While the Dons chased down Gunsolus, Cory LeBrun at third base was able to score before the out putting GU on the board.

Gonzaga scored two runs in the last three innings but it did not match the seven by USF. Gunsolus tripled down the right field line brining in a run in the seventh and Jimmy Sinatro singled in a run in the ninth.

The hit and RBI were both a collegiate first for Sinatro.

Gonzaga has a short turnaround before its next game. The Zags will face local rival Washington State University Tuesday in Pullman for a 6 p.m. first pitch.
