John -- That is great to hear! The Bunnies are all about getting psyched for the game, and adding a little fun to peoples' day. After all, sports is supposed to be about having fun. Sometimes, we get so involved with our Zags' wins and losses that we forget about that. Hearing stories like Elia's bring it back to what's important in life, and what's not.

The bunnies are a good luck totem, a tradition, a charm, a habit that's hard to break, a ritual of sorts, fun, and more !

Posted: Saturday December 11, 1999 09:05 PM
LOS ANGELES (AP) -- The little school that shocked the NCAA tournament with its run to the Elite Eight last season pulled off another big surprise Saturday.
Reserve Ryan Floyd scored a career-high 17 points, including five 3-pointers, and No. 24 Gonzaga held No. 11 UCLA to its lowest point total ever at Pauley Pavilion in a 59-43 victory.
"Two years ago, Gonzaga could not say that if we play our game we can win, but now we can," said Matt Santangelo, who helped the Bulldogs beat Minnesota and Stanford in the early rounds of the NCAA tournament.

Stanford, which has one of the biggest front lines in college basketball, was cut down to size by one of the smallest players in the NCAA Tournament.
Matt Santangelo scored 22 points as Gonzaga upset the second-seeded Cardinal 82-74 Saturday in the second round of the NCAA West Regional.
Quentin Hall, the smallest player on the floor at 5-foot-8, scored all 12 of his points in the second half and also had eight rebounds for 10th-seeded Gonzaga, a Spokane, Wash., school that is best known for producing John Stockton and Bing Crosby.

N.C.A.A. TOURNAMENT -- ROUND OF 16; Gonzaga Sheds a Label, And Gains Confidence
By TOM SPOUSTA
Published: March 21, 2000
Gonzaga is back, having shed its underdog status and traded curiosity for credibility, so don't be fooled by the warm and fuzzy stereotype. The Bulldogs' second straight trip to the National Collegiate Athletic Association tournament's Round of 16 no longer qualifies them as the underdog from Spokane, Wash.
As he left the court at the West Regional in Tucson, Matt Santangelo felt the transformation. It was officially the weekend Gonzaga assumed a larger role by knocking off second-seeded St. John's and seventh-seeded Louisville. Suddenly, the 10th-seeded Bulldogs are a very realistic choice to reach the Final Four.
''It took the whole concept of Cinderella and threw it out the window,'' said Santangelo, the senior point guard. ''Cinderella doesn't show up two years in a row. It solidified us as more than just a good basketball team. We're a good program.''

23 days until November, 2007, somewhere Mark Spink is BUMPING!
http://i237.photobucket.com/albums/ff232/ZagNative/NBA/Others/MarkSpinkvTexasChristian12-30-1998.jpg
From Tales from the Gonzaga Hardwood (http://books.google.com/books?id=HA_j7eXp6xsC&pg=PA145&lpg=PA145&dq=mark+spink+gonzaga&source=web&ots=g8Q9IuL3G2&sig=uet8l9dKUmVtTAGJUu_lLrtXEGY)
He remembered the unimposing vita emanating from his first physical as a GU freshman. He was six foot seven, 169 pounds. “The rigors of Division I basketball don’t tend to lend themselves to guys who are that size,” Spink said.
Although built like a 1-iron, Mark Spink left a legacy that transcended his scoring and rebounding totals. Ask players of Spink’s vintage to name a character or a powerful personality or best teammate, and they unanimously say, “Mark Spink.” And they start laughing.
The coaches, though, follow the laughter, quickly, with laudatory comments regarding his intense play.
“Mark Spink was the heart and soul of what we were all about,” coach Mark Few said. “Spink would go in there and scrap out a rebound against a Mark Madsen, or tip-dunk somebody he had no business beating. That sort of thing demoralized other teams. You could write an entire book on the things he did here. He loved to say and do outlandish things, but on the court, he came to play. He was fearless and never cared if he went out there and killed his body.”

Frank Burgess: All-American Zag (http://gonzaga.scout.com/2/256181.html)
Men’s Basketball’s Finest—published in 1998—is an official NCAA publication full of statistical information and photographs of the 400 best players to have ever played Division One basketball. The criteria for inclusion in this pantheon of the greatest collegiate players are imposing: a collegiate player must have received national honors, recorded nationally significant statistical achievements, or had national career or season records to make the list of profiled players. Only three players from colleges in the State ofWashington are in the book, and two are former Gonzaga stars: John Stockton, of course, and Frank Burgess, a 6’1” shooting guard form Eudora, Arkansas, who played for GU in the late ‘50s and early ‘60s.

We never reveal new Bunnies prior to the proper time. Patience my friends. . .
We've been out of town. We actually spent the last 4 days in the lovely state of Washington- and it was sunny almost the entire time. We were visiting family in Sammamish so no side trips to Spokane were in store.
Everyone is doing a nice job of keeping the bunnies in shape in the off season so they are ready to go for the first game. Keep up the good work!

Man I would be so impressed if someone, anyone had some image of that dunk vs. St. Mary's.
Missed jumped shot carumed high off the rim towards the middle of the key. Reason had already jumped for the rebound. He caught the ball behind his head and tomahawk jammed it all in one motion to end the first half.

9. Gonzaga
Our house: McCarthey Athletic Center opened last year. Of the 6,000 seats, 1,200 are reserved for students. They take up the side opposite the teams. The entire length of the lower level is a sea of navy blue right up to courtside.
Signs of madness: .... One chant we hold true to is "This is our house!" Members of the Kennel Club research players from the other team to come up with more original chants. They look up police records, GPAs, etc. There's always one song that gets students fired up. In unison, they jump up and down and sing. Then the cheering, screaming and arm-flailing commences.

Matt Santangelo v. Temple at the Great Eight Game in Chicago.
December 8, 1999
The Owls beat the Zags 64-48
Before that game, on November 24, 1999, Mark Few was interviewed in an ESPN Chat:
Joe: Gonzaga has always been a quality place. It's a great university that deserves the exposure it is now getting. My questions go to schedule: Will the players be able to hold up with road games (all within less than 10 days) against Cincinnati, Temple, UCLA, and Washington? Do you do anything special to prepare them for this kind of stretch?
Mark Few: Joe -- I have the same questions as you. The way it turned out is rather unfortunate. We want to play the big games, but not in a nine-day period. As far as preparation, in the off-season, we worked hard at our conditioning so we should be ready to play that amount of games in a short period. From a coaching standpoint, we'll have to shorten practices and really make sure we save our legs so that we're ready to peak at the right time. Andy Katz talked me into that crazy schedule.
;)
The ESPN Chat Transcription (http://gozags.cstv.com/sports/m-baskbl/spec-rel/112499aaa.html), going into the 1999-2000 season, is fun to read in retrospect.

Well, Andy Katz (http://sports.espn.go.com/ncb/columns/story?columnist=katz_andy&id=2698299) listed him in the top eight "blender guys" in December last year. What's a blender guy? "... a player who simply makes the offense flow better despite his lack of starlike stats."
David Pendergraft, 6-6, Jr., Gonzaga: Watching a Zags game, you likely will see the curly redhead doing something that makes this team better, whether that's banging in a jumper or an offensive putback or just running the floor and causing havoc. He's the ultimate Zag, someone like the old wild hair Zach Gourde, who used to seem to be in the middle of every play when he was on the court.
Drawing the fifth foul on Portland State's Scott Morrison November 30, 2006:

Some would say it's one of these three, from the Zags farm club across the mountains, affectionately known as "The Little Dogs":
Dan Dickau, who would probably get the nod from the ladies as the "Cutest Zag," indisputably the first Zag on the Grant Wahl All-Hobbit team:

Wow, thanks, Mendiant! I can't begin to say how much I learned about the history of the program and the people who made it so great, as I looked for context behind the images I was seeing. It's just been great fun.

ONE MORE DAY!
And to begin this last day, we look again at one of the greats of Zag history, because ... well, because we have some great photos we want to post.
http://i237.photobucket.com/albums/ff232/ZagNative/NBA/Others/Stockton/16209798STOCKTON.jpg
I love seeing photos of these guys on the court:

Will there be one leg of a great tandem like Stockton and Malone coming out of the current Zags' roster? I hope so! And will that person return to his Alma Mater and give back to the program the way Stockton has to Gonzaga and Malone to Louisiana Tech? I hope so!
HALL OF FAME BUMP!

Mods -- Later tonight, I will rer-post the Bunny link all by itself, so that it can be bumped up 50 or so times tomorrow before the game. It is the sincere hope of Zag Native and myself that this current thread be moved to the Hall of Fame at that time. It would be an absolute shame to lose all the hard work that ZN and others did in making this thread a huge success during the run up to the season. Thank you!

Small correction: While I would be pleased to see the photos which were collected here preserved in some way as a group and a reflection of some part of Gonzaga history, it was El Voce, not ZagNative, who suggested in a PM that it finally end up in the Hall of Fame.
On the other hand, it is indeed only right and proper that every post to which Zagnative contributes ultimately wind up in the Hall of Fame. ;)

Of course it is. There could be no doubt.

Thank you ZagNative for all your hard work in compiling and posting all the photo's in this thread and for adding all the relevant captions and background information.
I've really enjoyed them. I also endorse this thread as HOF material.

GU vs. Emporia State 2004 Bump!!
http://72.3.155.221/img/photos/2007/11/06/11-6_ESU_Gonzaga_BKO_1104_1_BP.jpg
Better against the Bulldogs?
There’s only one player on the Emporia State roster that was on the team during its exhibition trip to Gonzaga in 2004.
His memories of the game aren’t that great, either.
“We played pretty bad when we went up there, actually,” ESU senior guard Wes Book said. “... We weren’t very competitive when we played up there, and this year, we definitely want to be competitive.”
Book will get a second chance against the elite Division-I team on Wednesday, as ESU travels to face No. 14 Gonzaga on Wednesday in Spokane, Wash.
Looking back, the Hornets — who lost 114-86 in the 2004 preseason game — understandably had their hands full. At the time, future NBA players Adam Morrison and Ronny Turiaf both played for Gonzaga.
ESU, after falling behind 67-36 at halftime, actually outscored the Bulldogs 50-47 in the second half.
Book believes this year’s Gonzaga team — which interestingly is tied for No. 14 in the polls with ESU’s first opponent, Texas A&M — should be just as talented.
“You never want to go in thinking you’re going to lose,” Book said, “but definitely the goal is — against a team of that caliber — to compete and not get embarrassed.”
ESU showed that it could hang with the big boys in its first exhibition game last Thursday against A&M.
The Hornets led for five minutes in the first half and trailed by just two with seven minutes remaining before falling to the Aggies, 85-73, in College Station.
“I thought we did pretty well last game,” ESU freshman Matt Boswell said. “Hopefully we can continue that this game.”
Boswell was one of the highlights for the Hornets in their exhibition opener.
The 6-foot-6 guard from Wichita scored nine first-half points, finishing 3-of-8 from the field with a pair of 3-pointers.
“That’s kind of my game — knocking down shots,” Boswell said.
Boswell, who logged 17 minutes off the bench, also helped the undersized Hornets defend A&M’s taller post players.
ESU should face some of the same challenges against Gonzaga, which returns 6-11 center Josh Heytvelt.
The junior averaged 15.5 points and 7.7 rebounds a year ago.
ESU also will have to deal with one of the toughest environments in the nation.
In 2004, the Hornets were actually the first opponent to face the Bulldogs in their new arena, the 6,000-seat McCarthey Center.
“I just remember the student section was pretty nuts,” Book said. “They sit on the side, and they kind of overwhelm you on the court.”
Boswell said the Hornets wouldn’t back down from the challenge.
“We’ve got a lot of guys with experience — a lot of older guys that aren’t looking just to show up and play,” Boswell said. “We’re looking to compete and hopefully pull one out in the end. I think we can play with these guys.”
