    Blind Resume Game

    Team A:
    Record: 26-4 (13-4 conference)
    RPI: #1
    SOS: #1
vs. RPI top 50: 8-2 (4-0 at home, 0-2 on road, 4-0 neutral)
vs. RPI top 100: 13-4 (6-0 at home, 1-4 on road, 6-0 neutral)

    Team B:
    Record: 26-4 (13-2)
    RPI: #2
    SOS: #4
vs. RPI top 50: 8-3 (4-0 at home, 3-3 on road, 1-0 neutral)
vs. RPI top 100: 17-4 (10-1 at home, 6-3 on road, 1-0 neutral)

    Team C:
    Record: 25-5 (13-4)
    RPI: #10
    SOS: #13
vs. RPI top 50: 7-5 (4-2 at home, 2-2 on road, 1-1 neutral)
vs. RPI top 100: 10-5 (6-2 at home, 3-2 on road, 1-1 neutral)

I'm sure you can figure out who these teams are, but just look at the comparison. Two are expected to be one seeds and one is expected to be a 2 or 3 seed.

One seed to A and B, 3 seed to team C based on record against top 50

Can't recall who the researcher was, but there was someone who looked at RPI's and KenPom ratings and found that if you add the RPI and the KenPom rating together, you actually get a fairly accurate representation of the S-curve that the committee ends up with. In fact, in the past few years, this method predicted all but a few bubble teams whether they were in or out.

So, using this methodology with your resumes we can see:

        Team RPI+KenPom
        =================
        Team A: 1 + 5 = 6
        Team B: 2 + 25 = 27
        Team C: 10 + 2 = 12

Makes pretty good sense. Team B is the outlier and doesn't belong on the top line.

By the way, the Zags are currently 7 + 4 = 11, which is in the top 5.

Team A should be a 2 or 3. 1-4 vs top 100 RPI on the road (0-2 vs top 50) is the killer here. Not to mention that is New Mexico and that the MWC figured out how to game the RPI which also plays into the SOS.

Team B... Should be on the top line. 8-3 vs top 50 RPI. Only dicey issue is the .500 record on the road but not enough to keep them off the top line.

Team C... I'd put at a 2 seed. Not as strong vs top 50 RPI but above .500. Plus would expect top line team to not give up home games, even against top 50 RPI.

LOL... Loved that I blindly put Duke at a 2 or 3 seed. But knowing B is NM... I'd lean toward them being lower for the same reasoning. MWC gamed the RPI.

They've figured out if you play the top teams from lesser conferences, you'll get an inflated RPI. Their lesser opponents lose to them, but those opponents end up with good win-loss records. In turn, their adjusted winning percentage (and SOS) are higher.

Just like five teams from the Big 12 this year!

same way SMC does it. play the best of the worst and hope things fall your way.

Correction. SMC doesn't play the best of the worst. They just play the worst.
