I am in the middle of a huge argument with my dumb uncle, and he said MWC offered Gonzaga a spot. Only thing I can find online is a few message boards saying MWC SHOULD offer Gonzaga, but I don't see anywhere that it was ever officially an offer.

hope not...the MWC is a thankless league to play in....terrific teams and coaches mostly under the radar, hellacious travel in bad weather, hostile venues, and a collection of very good, near one and done talent/tranfers that for various reasons -- academic, behavioral -- were passed on by the power six. a lose lose for the Zags vs the WCC. has the vibe of an AAU/D-League/Bus depot conference.

It's BYU's worst nightmare that the MWC would invite Gonzaga to the league (Hawaii is football only, and the MWC only has 11 basketball schools right now). It would leave BYU "stranded" in the WCC without Gonzaga.

The MWC isn't bad at all---remember, BYU would have preferred to remain there for basketball if the MWC would have allowed them to stay and their football to go Indy. BYU at first was going to go to the WAC over the WCC, untill all of the WAC teams bolted for the MWC.

The MWC has good academic, state schools. Travel is bad to places like Wyoming, though. Other schools have large airports nearby.

I would rather keep going to Malibu in Jan, to be honest.

all due respect I am in San Diego and read a steady drumbeat of reports of how tough the travel is...and the comp. no doubt the MWC is better than the WCC but IMO doesnt represent a significant step up in glamor, which the C7 would.....i know...yadda yadda

ps- its a stretch to call the schools "good" academically. UNLV? New Mex? Boise? no way. AFA of course.

Gonzaga is playing in the top media markets on the coast (except Seattle) why would they want to play in fly over country ??

And why would they want to mess around in a conference where football prevails?

Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim, who has been in the Big East since its inception in 1979, said that the new Big East basketball conference, when it begins competition in the fall, will be among the nation's preeminent basketball conferences.

"They will end up with a really good league," Boeheim said. "They'll have some money coming in, and looks like they have a TV contract. And they don't ever have to worry about football juggling them around again. That was always going to happen. It was a miracle the Big East stayed together for so long. And football-basketball schools need to be together. And basketball-only schools need to be together.

Agree. At best, middle brow aggie/casino schools whose academic reps have been artificially gilded by soaring regional college-age demographics, strapped parents and absurd private school-- GU included-- tuition and fees.

Mike Roth graciously answered my email on this question about 4 hours ago, and confirmed that MWC has never even offered Gonzaga.

A dumb uncle of mine has been arguing with me all day that MWC offered but Gonzaga was 'scared' and declined the invitation. I knew he had no idea what he was talkin about, but it was great to get confirmation and shut him up.
