Gonzales Named WCC Rawlings Pitcher Of The Week

SAN BRUNO, Calif. - Gonzaga University junior pitcher Marco Gonzales was named Rawlings West Coast Conference Pitcher of the Week announced the conference Monday. Gonzales (2-1) is the first Bulldog to be honored by the conference's weekly awards this season.

It was the southpaws performance against the second-rank University of Arkansas in the Coca-Cola Classic in Surprise, Ariz., that garnered the honor.

The Fort Collins, Colo., native delivered a complete game shutout over the Razorbacks in a 3-0 Bulldog victory. Gonzales scattered eight hits while striking out nine batters in a dominate showing. He did not issue a walk and lowered his ERA to 2.45. The victory was his second consecutive for the Zags.

This is the fourth WCC Rawlings Pitcher of the Week honor for Gonzales. He was recognized once as a sophomore (Apr. 30, 2012) and twice as a freshman (Mar. 28, 2011 and May 23, 2011).

Baseball is back on the diamond Friday at 8:35 p.m. PT, when the team travels to the University of Hawaii for a five-game series.

I have actually watched a few games at the Univ. of Hawaii - - it is a beautiful baseball stadium but it has artificial turf b/c it is in the Manoa part of Honolulu and that area gets about 20 minutes of rain in the afternoon every day.

but, they have big crowds b/c it is the only ball game in town, plus - the nearest hotels are literally down in Waikiki so, yeah, brutal schedule.

Hawaii is 1-12 so far this season...chance for the Zags to get maybe 5 victories while they are on the island...
